Title: Villanova ties ND
Post by: Dawson Rental on February 04, 2019, 10:36:13 PM
By spending their 378th week in the AP top 25 poll, Villanova has tied Notre Dame for the 17th highest number of mentions in the poll's history.  Next week they should move past those whose name will not be mentioned twice to take sole possession of that spot.  And there will be much rejoicing!

If Villanova can stay in the poll for another 20 weeks without Georgetown rejoining the fun, then they will pass Georgetown to become the numero uno Catholic basketball school as measured by this metric.

Oh, by the way, MU is only trailing Villanova/ND by 8 weeks, so let's remember to wipe our shoes on them as we pass them by.  Them, of course, not referring to Villanova, but only those other guys.

Hopefully by this time next year we are the standard bearers, as we should be

Gonna be hard to pass Nova this season or next. I think they will stay ranked the rest of this season and next season season they are bringing in the #2 recruiting class in the country.

We should pass both Notre Dame (sucks) and Georgetown doh.

If we can manage to stay in the top 10 for another week we will be tied with ND for top 10 appearances as well

Is the new G.town? They used to be consistently ranked and would get top recruits. Now it's a sheet show. Just a collapse of a program. Doenst look to get any better. Govan gone soon and what the hell has Ewing brought in any top 100 guys at all.

GTown isn't looking good right now, but I'm cutting them some slack. JTIII faded at the end, but they made the dance as recently as 2015. As for Ewing, it's just his second season, so he deserves some time. I have no idea what his roster looks like the next few years, but he could still turn it around.

Their freshmen backcourt of McClung and Akinjo is going to be around for a while and will be a handful the next few years.

True. McClung is gonna be one of those guys you love to hate.

I dont know where Georgetown ends up, but when the BE freshman of the year voting comes in they will most likely have 3 of the top 7-8 frosh in the league.

Scientifically proven.

ND really, really sucks.

Folks, we're not number 1 because of the Dukiet, Majerus, late Raymonds and Deane years. The fact we're even close is a testament to the fact that when we're good, we're very good.

I'd also note that Villanova has at least three Nattys, to our one. That, in my mind, is the only measure that matters.

True.  If they build on the momentum of this class, they will be very good in two years

I think Leblanc ends up being the best of the freshman. McClung and Akinjo are a nice start, but Ewing still needs to bring in better players.  I don't think they're a tournament team next year.

I'm not sure what you are saying for sure but if you asking if Ewing has brought in any top 100 guys the answer is yes. His first season he picked #76 Jamorko Pickett. Last season he brought in #90 James Akinjo. #123 Josh LeBlanc and #245 Mac McClung have also been playing like top 100 guys. Next year there are no top 100 guys though #130 Qudus Wahab is close.

They do lose Govan next season but they replace him with Omer Yurtseven who average 13.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, and shot 50% from three (44 attempts) for NC State last season. I think with a year of growth, he could put up similar numbers to Govan. Add in growth from their trio of talented freshmen and they could be a bubble team next year. I would say they are dancing again in the next two seasons.

So much for holding that in reserve for next week.  Is a win against Villanova this week a must in order to pass ND up in top 10 mentions this season?  Probably.

Every time I hear that name it reminds me of a Mongolian address.

It'll be 3 to 2 when we pass them next season.  ;)

Don't be so sure. If the new rankings came out today, we would likely still be at #10, #11 at worst. I think #9 Michigan State will drop further than us for losing to Illinois, #11 Virginia Tech already lost this week, #12 Houston hasn't played yet, #13 Kansas lost already, #14 Villanova hasn't played yet, and #15 Purdue isn't passing us unless we lose twice.

Beat nova on Saturday and I think the worst we finish is #10 (with Houston passing us). Beat Nova on Saturday AND Houston loses at UCF or home to Cincy (2 of their toughest games yet) and we actually move up to #9.

I like the sound of this.  Kansas State, the gift that keeps on giving.

Yep. A Nova win Saturday, and last night's loss all but disappears.
