Was a topic on Mike and the Mad Dog Thursday afternoon. The final five they narrowed it down to was DWade, Jason McIlwain (sp?), the autistic kid who hit the six 3's in the fourth quarter of that HS game in upstate NY last year, Roger Federer, George Mason and Tony LaRussa IIRC. Wasn't able to call in, but no one called into to make a case for DWade while I was watching/listening. I guess I've listed what they deemed the final five in the order I'd pick them, though I along with most on here may be just a touch biased. ;) Who would everyone else vote for? Anybody obvious that is missing?
I believe the announcement will be made next Tuesday.
I could definitely see Wade.....he's the face of the resurgent, kindler/gentler NBA - - - something the league lacked for a decade. He's the anti-Iverson, anti-'me-me-me' player that rightly or wrongly personified the NBA in recent years........DWade would be a terrific choice.
While I definately think that Dwade deserves it, its just really hard to vote against the autistic kid who hit the six 3's. That was an awesome story.
Too bad we don't have a scholarship available for him. ::)
Among the four other than everybody's favorite here, I'd vote for Federer. Could be best tennis player of all-time before it's all said and done. But they haven't chosen a lot of non-Americans, so that works against him. The HS kid was a great story obviously, and I'm a guy who covers and coaches HS sports for a living, but it was nine months ago now, and the story has been told pretty thoroughly.

Was that the list of finalists? What about Fabio Cannavaro from the World Cup Champion Italian squad? Someone told me he was a finalist for the award.
One other thing... is anybody else starting to find Mike Greenberg's style annoying? I mean he tries to sensationalize everything and turn it into a controversy... i.e. Ben Wallace's headband, Bobby Knight's love pat, Strahan's comments, etc, etc. He also needs to take Billy Curry & Dick Vitale's love muscle out of his mouth.
that J Mac story was the coolest story Ive heard in quite some time, something like that gives me chills, loving the game of basketball, its great to see things like that, and happen to people that deserve it... I watched the ESPY's just to watch him win that award for best moment (if he didn't get it, I would have banned ESPN), and to watch him go to the stage, very touching, not an amazing sports moment, its an amazing moment period. However I would say George Mason would be a worthy choice, or the Italian National Team (although our country hates soccer, so doubt it), I would choose George Mason
Dodds is reporting that DWade will indeed be announced as the winner!
wade won it
It's listed on the SI.com website.
