Well, he played like crap in the first half.  I am confident not a single MU fan alive said, just wait he's gonna score 40

40 is stuff of legend.    And he did not have a good first half.    Patience is a virtue.

It wasn't just the points, but the Curry-esque way he scored them.

Micro to the macro...MU as a team didn't have the best start to the season either. Patience is indeed a virtue.

Glad to be one of the Wojo "apologists" along with you and many others of the unwavering-faith-in-Woj camp for quite awhile. Much left to be proven, and the last thing we need is an Eddie Moysh around here, but how many of you truly believed that this team would rattle off consecutive wins against teams such as Louisville, #12 KSU, #12 UW, and #14 Buffalo?

Lastly, what a new home arena the program has! A true home court advantage not seen since the Mecca days of Al,Hank, and Rick. To think it was that loud with the students on break.

I can't claim to have said that. But I did say, "He still can have a great second half like he did against Providence. Shooters gotta shoot."

Someone in the chat asked at half how many Markus would score in the 2nd half.  When I responded "18" I thought I was going to be ridiculed for too high of a number.  My guess should be ridiculed but for being LESS THAN HALF!!
I am still not processing what I witnessed

Well worth my expensive season tickets. Legendary performance. I love how Markus can have a miserable half and push through to have a brilliant world class half.  Speaks volumes of his character and resolve. This team should never lose hope. Clearly our rapid fire scoring machine could go off at any moment and destroy the competition.

"This is a really bad matchup for Markus. Taller and longer athletic guards make it hard for him to score on the drive or from 3"

This was what I said to my wife at HT tonight. I truly believed it would take an impressive 2H performance from the other fellas to pull it out (much like their impressive 1H performance)

That is why this one feels a little extra special.

Markus you are special

Here's the thing though -- he didn't get his first point of the 2nd half until the 16 min mark.

He scored 20 pts between about 16:04 and 9:00.
He scored another 20 between 9:00 and when he subbed out at about 1:30.

If college basketball keeps stats on this stuff, he may have a record or two.

I honestly thought down 19-10 and Howard picking up 2 fouls that we were about to get steamrolled.

Cause man, between the Bears and Marquette over the past couple of weeks I have felt like everything is right with the world.

There were some flashbacks to last year when he would get in foul trouble early, but boy, was tonight different. Wojo gave him some minutes in the first half with the 2 fouls, and Markus played smart. And then that second half, woooo boy! That kid is special. I'll be talking about this for years to come.

I had a simlilar thought.  Could the wandering in the desert of mediocrity be over with the Bears at the top of the NFC North Division and MU back in the Top 10?

I did...to be honest I still am not sure that his shot selection is what MU needs...but I said Wojo must understand something I dont because I felt at halftime they would have been up 10 if he wouldn't have forced the issue.  It appears we are going to live and die with Markus having an extremely aggressive shot selection.  When its falling for him it's amazing to watch.

For me, the most amazing thing about Markus' performance was that it wasn't like he was left unguarded and that Buffalo made it easy for him. They were right up on him on every 3 he took in the second half, even fouled him on a couple of them. On his drives, they were all over him. It was a truly extraordinary performance of incredible, history-making offense being better than very good defense.

And of course, the same could happen to us in a game or two this season. We could play great defense against a guy, and he could just be unconscious like this and go for 30 or 40 against us.

It's one of the reasons we all love sports so much -- you just don't know when you'll see history in the making until it's being made.

In the 1990s, the Twins had a pitcher named Scott Erickson. He had one great year as a youngster but then he hurt his arm and was never the same, and he hung around as a journeyman for about a decade. For two straight seasons, he had given up more hits than any other pitcher in baseball. And then, early in the following season, he pitched a no-hitter against the Brewers. In summary: The most-hittable pitcher in all of baseball got it together one day to pitch a no-hitter.

I love sports.

To further the comment on Buffalo not giving Markus anything, they were actually 100% set on denying him the ball anywhere on the court.  There was a point when an uncontested Sammy calmly dribbled the ball over half court while a defender was denying Markus even a glimpse at the ball as he trailed somewhere near the Buffalo free throw line.  For a second I considered the possibility that all 5 defenders might hold arms and encircle Markus just to force one of our other guys to take an uncontested dunk!

Now, some context:

Klay Thompson set the NBA record for most points in a quarter - 12 minutes - with 37. Only 2 NBA players had ever even scored 33 in a quarter before Klay set the record.

This exchange with Oates and Markus after the game.

"I saw you put 45 on Kansas State," he said. "I didn't think you were going to do it to us."

Howard smiled and replied: "You should be proud of your guys. Great game."

Classy response by Howard.  I like this Oates cat, too.  From the Milwaukee area.

I have made a similar comparison.

Kemba has a better handle and better ability to find teammates, which is why he can play PG at a high level in the NBA despite his slight build, while Markus is a better pure shooter. But yes, they have very similar games, body types and, seemingly, mental toughness.

I'm pretty sure it was 24 straight MU points.  I believe this season's high for consecutive points for his own team is 25, and I don't remember who or what team it is from.
