Title: Reranking the Big East
Post by: WashDCWarrior on January 20, 2008, 11:16:20 AM
One thing has held true so far this Big East season.  It's really, really hard to win on the road.  Home teams are a combined 33-9 (78.6%). WOW! Let's rank the teams, taking into account if there games were played at home or on the road.

For this ranking, every team is expected to win every home game and lose every road game. For a home loss, they lose one point. For a road win, they gain a point. If teams are tied on this stat, we'll use their overall conference record as the first tie breaker, and their overall record as a second tiebreaker.

    Team             +/-     Conf    Overall
1) Georgetown     +2      4-1      14-2
2) Cincinnati        +1      4-2      9-9
3) Pittsburgh       +1      3-2      15-3
4) Villanova         +1      3-2     13-3
5) Providence      +1      3-2      12-5
6) DePaul             0      4-2      8-9
7) Marquette        0      3-2      13-3
8) Notre Dame      0      3-2      13-4
9) West Virginia    0      3-2      13-4
10)Louisville          0      3-2      13-5
11)Connecticut      0      2-3      11-5
12)Syracuse        -1      3-3      13-6
13)Seton Hall       -1      2-3      12-6
14) USF               -1      1-4      10-8
15)St. John's       -1      1-4      7-9
16)Rutgers          -2      0-6      8-11

What do we learn by looking at the conference in this manner?

1) UConn is better than their 2-3 record.  While a losing record is never impressive, watch for them to improve upon that mark and move up in the 'standard' rankings.

2) DePaul is a pretender.  Although the have a 4-2 record, they're actually a middle of the pack team.  As they play some more road games, watch for them to be a .500% team soon.  Considering they're 8-9 overall, I expect them to finish with a losing conference record.

3) No team is out of it.  Even winless Rutgers, who has played 4 of there games on the road, can get back into the middle of the pack with a couple of road victories
