Post by: CTWarrior on November 11, 2018, 04:58:24 PM
I suppose I should know this, but what is the latest with Ike Eke?  How is he recovering?

Out indefinitely. Would not be surprised if they sought a medical redshirt and tried to put him on the Otule plan.

No inside knowledge, but he looks uncomfortable just walking across the court during pregame warmups.  Hope this isn't a lifelong issue for him.

Without having specifics about his injury and history.... generally, back surgery at his age does not bode well.

Wojo was quoted in the journal sentinel the other day that Eke's back is really giving him problems and he's not close to playing.

If Eke can never play again, does the scholarship count against the 13 they get?  It sounds like he is not playing this year.

If he leaves the team, the scholarship doesn't count.  Even if he remains on academic scholarship.

Obviously, none of us really know how bad Ike's back is or what procedure (if any) he'll need.

However ...

I had a very bad back starting when I was about 15. I lived with the pain for nearly a decade ("prescription" was rest and/or PT on and off for years) before finally having surgery when I was 24. I was out of work for about 6 weeks, but by the end of that year I was better than ever and had absolutely no restrictions. I was wishing like heck that I had the surgery years earlier. No complications now that I am an old(ish) man, either.

Obviously, it's a personal anecdote and not "proof" of anything, just offering some hope to Ike and other back sufferers. Surgery today is a lot less invasive, too.

Ike is a high quality young man. Hoping and praying that he recovers from this injury.  In the meantime he is a valuable member of the team and glad he is part of the program.

I understand this well. Spine surgery is my profession.

According to reports, Ike already had surgery. If true, and he's still having problems, that's not good.

I'm not a spine surgeon, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Seriously, your comment is consistent with what I heard from my docs. Fortunately, I was able to avoid the surgery altogether with intensive core strengthening exercises.

Thanks for the insight. Wishing good thoughts for the young man with two 3-letter names.

If he isn't able to play again, maybe we can get Bol Bol to transfer here.

Let's hope it never comes to that. I want him to play and to excel.

Get well soon Ike!
