Title: Matt Heldt
Post by: Matt Heldt The Milk Man on November 05, 2018, 10:22:35 AM
Will Matt Heldt make it a big impact this year for Marquette?

Matt's biggest contributions will probably not be measurable. Having a steady senior who leads by example on the floor, in the weight room, in practice, etc. never shows up under his name on the stat sheet, but it makes a big difference to the program. For Wojo, knowing he has a guy who will always know where to be and what to do on the floor, that makes his life much easier as well. Matt may not get the accolades that Markus or Sam will get, but he will certainly have an important role to play on this year's team.

I know it's not a measurable stat, but if we were to count good box outs that allowed someone else to get a board, Matt would be up there with Otule for most all time.

This is a good observation and I think its starting to come into vogue a bit more in the NBA - I've been hearing more about comparing a team's effective rebounding % with particular players on and off the court (kind of like an advanced +/- rebounding stat) since Brook Lopez joined the Bucks. I guess his personal rebounding stats aren't overly impressive, but every team he joins becomes a better rebounding team overall once he shows up.

Like we have said before in multiple different topics, Matt has already reached his ceiling and will be a steady senior this year and I am happy to have him at MU

Agreed, which is why Otule's loss in 2012 was a much bigger impact than most thought

Otule was also a big defensive presence in the paint though

Matt has made steady progress each year he has been in the program. He has also made steady progress during the course of each year.  I expect that slow steady upward trend to continue this year. Matt has consistently demonstrated his ability to add value in whatever ways he was asked to do so. The last two years I believed his ability to deliver a certain amount of quality minutes was essential to the team's success, which he delivered at the requisite level each year.  With the depth of the team, I think his role this year will be more game specific. If Matt could deliver one SOTG performance and 5 Honorable Mention SOTG  in Big East play that would be a very big contribution. Looking at the rosters in the Big East and the guys who man the 5 spot at other teams, that should be an achievable goal.

Senior leader.   Highest character.  Experienced banger when MU plays against teams with talented bigs.   Exactly what you want a 4 year, program big to be.

I'd love it if he can be a 20/10 guy for us. Display some of the three-point range he showed at Neenah and in the various half-court ice cream tosses. While also providing quality defense and shot-blocking.

Not expecting it, mind you, but I would love it if it happened.

If Matt were to improve from last season's 3.9 ppg/4.7 rpg to 20 ppg/10 rpg, that would make Frank Kaminsky's emergence as an All-American look downright ordinary. Plus, Matt the Milkman has way more branding potential than Frank the Tank.

So you think there is not only the "possibility" of him being an All-American, but that Wojo would let him start popping 3's?  :-X

I agree with Herman here. I'm not sure where the narrative of "Matt has hit his ceiling" came from. He has steadily improved every season. I don't think there's any reason to expect something different this season. I do think the talent around him has gotten better so he may get passed on the depth chart, but I think we have yet to see his best basketball.

Oh no, I think there's zero possibility of any of that happening. But I'd love it if it did.

Just messin' with you. I use emojis rather than teal.

I agree with TAMU, though. I think Matt will play better this year than last. Wojo seems to have a lot of trust in him, which Matt has earned with his hard work.

All that said, if Matt could be an All-American, and Markus is already getting some of that buzz, and Sam is the general consensus best player on the team...

...any chance one of the wings could step up as a sure-fire NBA early entrant (paging Jamal or Bailey) and Chartouny could be tossing dimes like Michael Carter-Williams en route to a five-man Marquette All-American First Team?

Was curious about teams with multiple (3+) AP All-Americans. I found 4:

1948-49 Kentucky
Ralph Beard (1st team)
Alex Groza (1st team)
Wah Wah Jones (2nd team)

1965-66 Kentucky
Louie Dampier (1st team)
Thad Jaracz (3rd team)
Pat Riley (3rd team)

1997-98 Arizona
Mike Bibby (1st team)
Miles Simon (1st team)
Michael Dickerson (3rd team)

2001-02 Duke
Jay Williams (1st team)
Mike Dunleavy (2nd team)
Carlos Boozer (3rd team)

I'm expecting at least averaging 20/20.
