Title: 30 Years from Now...
Post by: WashDCWarrior on January 17, 2008, 08:26:15 PM
we'll see the light blue unis again.

In the meantime, we can all wonder....

1) Why Crean didn't start or give significant minutes to Blackledge in the second half.  He was the best interior defender in the first half and made a couple buckets that neither Barro nor Burke could have.

2) Why Fitz is afraid to shoot.  He had sufficient space on numerous occasions.  Why does he think he's in there.  To rebound? To defend?  I'll take his shot over Matthews, James, etc. all game.  Grow a pair.  Take the shot.

Usually on a Big East road loss, we can blame the refs. (at least partially)  If anything, they favored Marquette tonight.  This is on us.  Crean gets a fair amount of the blame.  All of our outside shots were rushed.  Even the open ones.  Players played hard, but had nerves of boiling water.

I think all those cupcakes have finally given us food poisining.  Hopefully this game was our detox.

Point 1 I disagree with.  Padgett abused Blackledge.  On the other hand, he has length and quickness and good hands and I can't believe we wouldn't be better off playing him more.

You are right on with point 2.  He passed up two open 3s early.  If Fitz isn't going to shoot, he may as well not play, especially against a team like Louisville, where he lack of quickness precludes him from offering anything else.  He surprisingly showed a little fight under th basket tonight, though, which was nice.

Finally, we've played 4 Big East games before this one, so I think the cupcake excuse is wearing out.  Tonight is a case of us meeting a team who is a bad match-up for us.

Fitz had the same problem against WVU; passing up open 3's.  Somebody's going to take the shot, and it rarely a better option than Fitz.

Regarding his inside play, I agree.  Good hustle tonight, fought for rebounds, loose balls, etc.

I coach 7th graders and tell them the same thing I'd tell Fitz tonight.  TWO HANDS!!  He got one hand on a lot of those rebounds, loose balls, etc. but it takes two hands to secure it.

Overall, the team (not just Fitz) had good energy tonight, but against a good team (yes, Louisville is a good team) it takes more than just energy to win.  Our weaknesses were exploited tonight.
