I was excited for the small setting, being closer to the court, packed into a sellout arena, but I was really disappointed. Maybe it was more because of the lackluster product on the floor, but I just didn't enjoy the environment at all. The bleachers aren't ideal, I really missed the video screens, and they couldnt even scan my digital ticket on my phone. Not a positive experience for me.
Did anyone else feel the same way? Or am I the outlier here?

Did you pay $10?
They scanned my digital/mobile ticket no problem. I thought the experience was unique and it was nice to be closer than my regular seats were in the BMO... but no, it wasn't as good an experience. A lot of experience for the $$ though!
Fine with it for an NIT game. Great price ($10), fans were into the game (especially the students) and there isn't a bad seat in the house. My view was better than it was at the Bradley Center for my season tickets.
The thing with the Al is despite being small, it's not a pit. The seats are spacious and the aisles wide. So it can be a little cavernous.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great facility and I love taking the kids there for womens games. I just think people might expect too much from it for a men's game.

I know, right. 8 x letter winner at MU, bleed blue and gold, just can't please everyone, go Marquette, just want to give Oregon it's due, some people just perpetually upset 😡
There was a game that MU played at the Al as part of the regular season, couple years ago (blanking on the game), due to a schedule conflict with the Bradley Center. That game was real fun. Granted, the team was a little better that game.
I had a blast. Frustrating game, but the venue was waaaaasy better than the last NIT game I attended in Milwaukee.
Curious, was the Al loud? It sounded somewhat quiet on TV .. even when something awesome happened and you could tell the crowd erupted .. the mics were not picking that up.
The Al seemed loud in person. Games are always louder in person, than what TV picks-up.
Loved the game at the Al. Very personal. No "bad" seats. Feel much closer to the game as a fan. Excellent energy from the crowd, even with 30 minutes of a frustrating game. And the LaCrosse team was hillarious behind the basket. Lots of fun.
Much better than the Bradley Center where I keep thinking I get a better view on my TV.

+1. Up close and personal with Bo walking around and mingling and the players and action so close--its great. Worse seat in the house in a good seat. Howard jawing with his defender was great during the frickin 7 minute tv timeouts. Loved to see his interaction with the students. Students were great.
Sounds like a very lilliputian experience.

Not really. The flow of the game kinda killed the juice.
Loudest it got was the chorus of groans when Howard was throwing the ball all over the gym at the end.

I thought they could have done a better job in the placement of the band. Seemed kinda liked they just got stuck in the corner. The sound system and acoustics are also obviously not as good as the BMO, but agree that it wasn't great. I think it's hard for fans to get supper pumped for a game against harvard no matter the circumstances. If the draw had been different where it was possible to host ND, Id guess that it would get just as loud as the BMO.
I was there and thought MU played one of its best defensive games of the year. Not sure how much of it was due to the opposition. But, I was generally pleased. We were defending for a change! Had we gotten stops all season, like we did tonight, we'd be playing in the other tournament.
I don't worry about the offense, we can flat out score, and will bounce back offensively on Sunday. But, if we continue to guard like we did tonight (and get healthy), we can make a run!
GO MU!

How do you define it? Do you have to attend all games for all 40 minutes to be a fan in your book? I'm not chained to the seat because I bought it. I still watched the rest of it. I just did it with a burger and a beer in hand. I was much happier at Sobleman's than sitting knee to knee in the bleachers watching a sub-par game.

If there had been any flow to the game to begin with, these would have killed it. Lost count of how many times a horn would sound, guys would shuffle to whatever spot they were supposed to be at, and the ref would stand there with the ball another 30 seconds so ESPN could do ESPN things.
Still love the Al center, though, and the students were fantastic.

I didn't like the experience today. It was lacking in a lot of ways. I think that's pretty straightforward. Combine that with a pretty poor product on the floor, and there wasn't much to be excited about. If that's whining in your book, then sure, I whined tonight.

You're certainly free to enjoy the games however you want, but when there's been multiple threads about people complaining that they can't get tickets because the games sold out, you have a ticket and choose to watch the game 2 blocks away at a bar, I mean come on, you knew you'd catch some flack for that. Once again, your tickets, use em how you want, but given the circumstances, I can certainly understand some people being irritated with your rational.

Sure, makes sense. But I did go. I just didn't finish the game. Sitting by large groups of kids bouncing around and not paying attention didn't help, being squeezed into the bleachers to make room for said kids was also less than enjoyable, and then the game itself was not fun in the first half. I'm fine with taking some flak for making a logical decision to leave. Plus, I earned some points with the wife who was feeling the same way. I'll take the pros of the decision over the cons of strangers critiquing my behavior any day.
I asked in my original post if I was the outlier in not enjoying the experience, and it looks like I probably was. No big deal. I can see why some people might like it. It just didn't do it for me.

Anyone that leaves a game at halftime cause he wanted a freaking barseat needs to not talk about being a better fan and atmosphere. Maybe the atmosphere would be better if more fans had your ticket that actually want to cheer on the team.
It was a little crowded in our row of bleachers but some sweater vests that were in our row left at halftime, we really enjoyed the 2nd half and the extra elbow room didn't hurt.
A good chunk of our fanbase are alcoholics, so half the crowd is going through withdrawal when games are played at the Al. It gets so severe that some even need to leave at halftime.

None of that happened, bud. I was excited for the chance to see a game at the Al. I thought being on campus in a small arena would be great. Since it was a 6pm start, I had to leave work early and rush to the game without eating. So then when the first half was not fun to watch and I was getting pretty hungry by 7, I decided to leave to get some food. It wasn't some kind of protest against the team, it was me weighing my options and choosing to leave the stadium. I still rooted for the team to win. I still got fired up when Sacar had his big dunks in the second half.
I then came on the internet to ask if others were disappointed too, or if it was just me. By the response to this thread, it sounds like most people liked it. I can see why they might. If the game had been at 8, and if the game had been better, maybe I wold have liked it more. I'm not trying to impress a single person. Just talking about my experience. It's really just that simple.

He'll be old enough for chili pretty soon eng.
We're a bit away from that. Gave him home made chili the other day and it didn't go well, spice just ain't his bag yet.

Benny IRL probably:

You have to admit, that manpurse of yours draws a lot of attention. If not for that, I would have totally looked right past you and nored without putting 2 and 2 together. But those polka dots made you easier to pick out of a crowd than it was to find Titan when he wore feathers.
(Prediction: By end of game Sunday, nored will a) be completely toilet trained or b) carrying around the wettest diaper ever.)

Obviously a 'mild' man. Perhaps a good old boiled hot dog to start with just a little spoonful. By 2nd grade he'll be 'all in'.
I had a general admission ticket, but I just stood along the railing above the student sections to get a better view.
You are standing the whole game but you are also about 20' away from the action. I'll probably try that again Sunday if I can get a ticket.

It makes you an internet tough guy because you came on the internet to talk about how you left and it was because you just couldn't accept Marquette's performance. Not sure who you are trying to impress with your whole "I look down my nose a $20 ticket for a pretty unique experience because a team who has proven to have bad games this season, had a bad game" schtick but I'm kind of over it.

The problem with feeding chili to toddlers is that eventually you have to clean up the chili diaper.

All the more reason to double down on

They allowed folks to stand their until about 4 years ago for Marquette Madness. It's an excellent view.

Naw
A. I'm oblivious to the bag and it is probably the least embarrassing way I've drawn attention to myself
B. The wife character will be there Sunday so she'll probably have cause it's a pseudo purse
C. Don't really have a third thing but I started with an itemized list and it's weird to only have two items in that list

Apparently the word excellent is highly subjective. It was so bad I left at halftime.
This is a really weird way to explain that one is hungry and needs to go get food to eat.

Methinks thou doth protest too much. ::)

That's strange.
It's not that hard a game to grasp, even when hammered...
