Title: Ode to the Bradley Center
Post by: Dr. Blackheart on February 22, 2018, 04:44:37 PM
Opened in October of 1988 with an exhibition game between the Blackhawks and Oilers. Amy Grant was the first concert attended by 6,679 lost souls, bringing in $106k. Whitey Dukiet's team finished 13-15, with Trevor Powell as the leading scorer. Mike Flory was the team captain. I believe the Wisconsin game was the first game I attended (a loss). The Piano Man was fired after that season.

What are your best memories?:

The three best coaches to hate for me were Huggins, Jimmy B., Dixon.  The teams to most hate were ND, Louisville and Cuse...maybe earlier DePaul and UAB teams. Even though KO put life into the program, the games were generally boring except for his swearing and Tony Smith and Mac. Deane's NIT games were a highlight as were his timeouts.  Crean brought in the crowds and a F4 run with the best player of all time (along with pacing and Diet Pepsis)...but also we started to see the NBA migration from MU become more regular.  Joining the BE really changed our trajectory. The UCONN first game. Novak's game winner. CUSA court storm.

With Buzz, every game was a surprise.  From dancing to sweating to OTs. Walk It Out Fosse, the Wrong Way Game, Junior's into OT shot. Wojo gave us Villanova and the 100 Year.

Best promotions: Free tuition shot, Palermo Pizza, Fr. Wild Bobblehead.  Best crowd highlights: The Bat Game, Jump Around Guy, and the set-up Vadger fan who tore off his shirt to reveal MU gear.  Best mascot:  Tall Titan as he is in the HOF.

I sat pretty much everywhere.  The best seats always seem to be near the students. The best Big Head:  Grinch. The best costumes:  Unitard Cowboy, Teletubbies, The Butlers Did It, the Banana guy only because of the liquor he hid in his costume and took out with the help of five guys in a bathroom stall. Best Food:  Carvery. Best intro video:  Tie between Pray and Remember the Titans.

This year, we had four generations attend a game. Last night was my last game. Brought my adult daughter for Al's Night.  Two different cancers beat over this era for her. She was literally undefeated in the BC in her lifetime until this season, but that is on the boy now that found her. We think the streak was 141. Needless to say, we enjoyed our beers. Good way to go out.

Jae Crowder "it's over" vs Louisville, the Jake Thomas 4 point play vs. Syracuse (Loudest I ever heard it)

My last game as a student against DePaul gets an honorable mention. Marquette was so bad that year but it was nice to go out with a win. You woulda thought it was prom with all the pictures we took after the game.

Georgia Tech vs USC is the best Bradley Center moment.

Loudest moment. Novak's shot to beat Notre Dame

So many, but here are the best that come to mind (of games I attended):

First game with my daughter vs San Francisco in '05. Novak was her favorite player and we hung outside the locker rooms to try to meet him. The security guard said no but Steve's mom overheard me say Steve was her idol. She chatted with us until Steve came over and posed for pics with my daughter.  She was in heaven.

First BE game with a huge win over #2 UConn in '06.  Steve with 41 and 14.

Steve's game-winner vs ND in '06.  Loudest I ever heard the place.

Coobie helping us beat #12 Pitt by scoring 20 points (including 8-8 FTs in the last minute) when he had to start in place of an injured Jerel in '07.  I'm pretty sure that was the game when he shimmied up the court after hitting a 3.

Clinching the C-USA regular season title against UC in '03.

Staying in Milwaukee over President's Day weekend '12 to see wins over Pitt on Saturday and #23 UL on Monday.

Beating #25 UL with Dameon Mason's and-one on a busted play that was supposed to go to Novak or Merritt in '04.

And of course...Bat Game against PC in '13.

So many more....

Yep.  First time I saw him in person, I told my wife we were watching MU's next NBA player.

Guys like Wesley and Jimmy, you saw it over time.  With DWade, it was clear from the start.

Last night was quite possibly my last BC game as well. Baby is due on March 2, the day before Creighton. Here are some of my favorite memories:

My first game at the BC was Marquette's first.  Versus Rice on a Friday night during Dukiet's second year.  They did the whole "turnoff the lights and introduce the team thing," but the lights took about five minutes to get fully bright again so the tip was delayed.  We were all amped to see the beginning of the Gerald Posey era.  He had to sit out as a Prop 48 his freshman year and was supposedly "dominating in practice."  It took me until about halftime to realize he wasn't any good.  Season went down from there.

Lot of great games there and except for a few at the mecca it is the only arena i have seen MU home games (sans one in Green Bay 😂)
With that said the BC was a crap design.  The vomit holes, the horrible sight lines, the horrible upper deck, the end zones and the corner sections.  Lot of great memories but truly a horrible design.  I think the Bradley Center hurt MU over the years, now sure it was great when Uconn or cincinnati louisville etc and the house was full, but no stadium in america could be quieter with 15k in it then the BC. Maybe the new chicago stadium but thats about it.
The new stadium with its bball only design, the large percentage of seats on lower deck and its smaller size will be absolutely huge for Marquette.  I think for the first time in 30 years, apart from a few games a year, MU will once again have a great home court advantage they enjoyed before the BC.  I have some great memories but will not miss it a bit for those reasons. Onward n upward

Any ode to the Bradley Center is not complete without a mention of Freeway - the original jump around guy with much better moves.

Other highlights for me include the Michigan game the Saturday after finals where MU almost beat the defending champs. With finals over for most the % of drunk students was astronomically high.

Another great memory was the MU-Dayton game that turned into a throwdown between our Tony Smith and Dayton's Negelle Knight, which we lost at the buzzer.

Storming the court when we beat ND in 1989/90 (can't remember which year now).

All the great clashes against Cincinnati under Huggins, Memphis with Penny Hardaway, buzzer beaters both ways against Louisville, and of course having celebratory beers with Mike Deane at Turners post game.

The gritty teams and Juco pipeline under Buzz - DJO, Butler, Crowder, Buycks - and the keys rattling for Davante at the FT line.

The National Marquette games I came back for with packed crowds, although we seem to lose more of those than we win.

All in all, lots of great memories of the Bradley Center.

It was designed for hockey. The BC was a great design for hockey. Therefore, it was not a crap design, it just wasn't designed for basketball......even though basketball was the dominant sport played there for 30 years.

That was my first MU game in person, being a freshman from way down south in Rockford, IL. It was the biggest arena I'd ever been in at the time.  That season and most of freshman year are a blur to me at this point.

The '02 Cincy game. Cordell hit a 3 on the right wing and "stuck the dagger in." Loudest I remember.

Been meaning to ask, what's the play on the intro videos, looks like the green court and an "and 1" Marquette basket.

Also shout out to Brew for being on the Jumbotron last night.

Are you referring to the old green dual marquette/bucks court from the late 89s early 90s?

Best moments, Chris Crawford's deep 3 from the coaches box to ice Cinci. Then the game last year against Nova happened.  Most hated player, Bobby Brennan from Cincinnati.  Most athletic, Kenyon Martin that could catch flat footed alley oops and throw Wardle's shot into the 20th row.  You knew it was business when Deane brought out the gold frames!

Biggest game, Novak against UConn.  Player that made me think wow, Wardle after watching years of Deanes stiff players! He drove down the lane and tomahawk dunked it.

2 things during my freshman year in 03-04:

- Somehow ending up sitting in court side seats for madness. One of the guys in my hall was a little crazy. Saw 6 open seats and just walked us down there. No other students near us

- my first MU game in person. Vs ND. They were a top 10 at the time (I think). Chris Thomas was a NBA prospect. Ended front row student section after waiting all day and skipping classes to see that win.

Never forget my last game as a student on senior night 06-07. Vs Pitt w/Aaron gray, Sam young, levance fields. What a win. Loudest I have ever heard it in person

Besides some of the other things mentioned, I have to add the Georgetown game in 2012.  It was Accepted Students Day, and glow jr., who was a HS senior, brought along a school buddy who had been accepted.  The kid was brilliant, but his family was of pretty modest means, and I don't think he had attended many, if any, big time sporting events

Glow and I took the boys for lunch at the Courtside Club.  Glow jr's friend got a kick out of high-fiving the players as they ran through.  We walked out to the court and past the pep band, and he was in awe of the whole spectacle. The place was packed.

If you recall, that was the first time the student section tried the "I believe that we will win" chant, and it worked perfectly:

https://www.youtube.com/v/3AF2ki9Y4rs

He was absolutely sold.  Unfortunately, his family was unable to make it work financially, and he wound up at community college. But seeing the entire Marquette basketball experience through a fresh set of eyes is a wonderful memory.

Unfortunately, I keep coming back to Amoroso just turning and pushing that Louisville player on the free throw attempt when it was abso-eff-lutely unnecessary, getting whistled for the dumbest foul in college basketball history, and Marquette losing the game.

We had a similar experience in 2011 with a kid we know.  Brilliant computer whiz who had immigrated from Kenya and needed financial help for school.  He had an amazing time at MU but only got a partial scholarship, then got a free ride from Marist.  Fortunately, he loved it there too and got a great education.

Started up a company with some friends and is now driving a Bimmer, living in the bay area and traveling the world.  All at 25.  And a truly great kid.

I have two distinct memories from the BC I will never forget.

In 2006, my family of Connecticut ex-pats got invited by friends to go see UConn, the team of my childhood, play in Milwaukee against some team I never heard of.  Novak scored 41.  Two years late, I was attending the university where I would meet my wife and my best friends.  I got a chance to be in a booth at the BC with Novak a few weeks ago, and couldn't work up the nerve to introduce myself and tell him that his 41 point game literally changed my life.

The other is doing the stupid Cotton Eye Joe dance at the end of the tunnel with TAMU and others on multiple occasions (though we never won a prize for best dancer!) while I was in the band from 07-12.  Those were the days, though there's oddly not a single game I remember standing out (maybe the Cadougan buzzer-beater after we couldn't hit a 3 all game...also against UConn).

Of course I missed the Villanova game for Hamilton...I'm still salty about that one.

It's gonna be hard to walk out of the BC for the final time on the 3rd.

Oddly most the games I had a blast at we lost...

Vs Cuse in 2009 made me decide to go to MU

Vs ND in 2010 we woke up at 6am brought a bunch of old four lokos and stood in line.

Camping out for the UW game in 2011

Trying to tailgate outside the Bradley center before destroying ND in 2011

Some other fantastic memories but those really stick out to me when I think of my favorite games.

My favorite games:

(1/2/2000) MU beats Xavier; comes back from 16 down at half
http://www.gomarquette.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/010200aaa.html

(2/13/1994) #22 MU falls to Cincinnati (OT) on a Sunday afternoon game on ABC; lights go off at the BC.  Key, Jimmy Mac, and Logterman were all seniors.  Would go on to win the GMC, advance to the Sweet 16, beating Kentucky, losing to Duke. KO's last season, and the "Warrior" too. >:(

That Pitt game in 2007 (Kinsella game) was the loudest game I've ever attended. Loudest sustained moment I saw in person was earlier that year when we hosted Georgetown. Dom "fouls" Jon Wallace on a 3 in the final seconds, up 3. Upper deck was shaking with the noise, but Wallace hit all 3, and the jerks beat us in overtime.

Greatest promo has to be the glowsticks they gave away to students against (I believe) Georgetown in either 09 or 10 and the resulting shower from the upper deck and eventually onto the floor.

Me?  I'm thankful that I got to experience most of the moments aforementioned cited, no less as an MU alum of the graduate variety only.

Of all the memories - of which there are many too numerous to count as I enjoy my elentftwentiest beer from a casino bar in Benny Vegas (Reno) - the most memorable of which is my (now) wife and I deciding to marry in Milwaukee while at the BC watching MU spank a [oxymoron alert] ranked GTown. Never again will this world see such a unique and memorable wedding thrown for $22,000 (including honeymoon).  BestDecisionEver.   Thank you Amigos, Steve, Fitz, Chappy and Ousmane.

I will be the grown man shedding tears next Saturday.  From my first AC/DC concert as an 18-year old HS senior that gave me permanent hearing damage to the many Warrior games I've enjoyed with my MU brethren, the BC will always hold a special place in my heart next to the other moments that really matter.

I'll give you guys one.  Can't say it was anywhere near my favorite but it was plenty memorable.  Chick and I were up in Pilarz' skybox with Larry when after getting an email to 'cease and desist' the entire student section at a packed Notre Dame game turned toward the box during 'You Suck!'.  That was the last time the band ever played it in the BMO BC!

Otherwise known as the "Not Dale Carnegie Box".

Other than many of the games already mentioned was Springsteen's Seeger sessions show in 2006. We were on the rail center stage, my wife turned to me after the show and said "That's the most fun I've ever had in my life!".

A darkened arena, a flashing light show, music adding to the anticipation and then...out skates the Golden Eagle to a chorus of boos and laughter!

The funniest moment had to be the Bat game. Nothing topped a completely darkened Bradley Center with the soundsystem blaring "My Heart Will Go On". That coupled with the bat swooping at both Cooley and appropriately Kadeem Batts...it doesn't get better than that.

I hope there is either a before/halftime/after game thing on the bradley center highlights and the bat makes it.

LOL

That is too funny.  Someone has to write that into a comedy somewhere

One of my first games as a student, I remember DJO putting some ill-advised red-headed kid on a poster with a MONSTER one-hander in non-conference play. They posted a picture of it online and I was in the background looking on in enchantment.

Bat game was amazing as many people have already stated. I remember someone created a short-lived Bradley Center Bat twitter account.

Probably felt the most upset after the Vanderbilt beatdown, but then didn't lose a game at home for a year and a half.

They sent out a campus-wide warning about not chanting YOU SUCK during the Hey Song but very next game against DePaul, no one cared and it was the loudest I'd ever heard it! Haven't heard the Hey Song since.

Didn't always approve of all of the NSFW moments against Bucky and others but not gonna lie, always entertaining. Personal favorite was when they showed a sign on the Jumbotron someone made for that game against Cuse that said something like "Michael-Carter Williams GF Vander Blue Me".

Enjoying all of the memories from the seasoned Scoopers. Wish I had been around for some of those. Thanks for sharing everyone!

I dug this up again about all the close games in the Louisville vs. Marquette series.  The amount of barnburners home and away is incredible actually. While it was a heated rivalry, the fans had mutual respect.  Cardinal fans were cheering wildly for MU versus Murray State and the Big Blue Nation fans.

That was the best/worst read I've had in a while.  Knowles had no right hitting any of those shots back in '11.  Always hated 'Ville, and knew Slick Rick has been dirty for a long time, but man, we played some exciting games against him.  Imagine this read would be 100x better/worse if it were MU-ND.  We've had memorable games against UW too, but not nearly as many close games.

I always loved that article. Great memories, and the author - while clearly a UL fan - gives a very accurate description of the games. I just wish the sound clips of Homer and Mac for the Hutch and Wardle 3s (numbers 5 and 2 on the list) still worked. They were still functioning when I tried a couple years ago, but seem dead now.

  • St. John's, 2011: The Red Storm came from behind to win, but those last 10 minutes were some of the longest at the BC. One of the few times I really felt the team gave up on Buzz. Effort was so lackluster. Thankfully, the team rallied after that game to make the Sweet 16.
  • Ohio State, 2014: 35 freaking points?!? 16 in the second half?!? Awful game to watch.
  • St. John's, 2015: Our fourth OT loss in conference play, and second straight double OT 1-point loss. Dismal end to a disappointing season that should've been so much better.
  • Iowa, 2016: My god that was an ass-whupping. The BC was dead by the under-12 timeout in the first half.

Butler this year.

The Ohio State game fell on the same day that one of my younger brothers was playing in the State Tournament for boy's volleyball, so we sold my parents' tickets for way too much for what the person saw.  I almost wanted to give the person their money back.

St. John's was 2014 I believe.

I remember that game really well. We were still kicking the tires about a NCAA birth, we'd talk about in in line before every game. Then the back to back 2OT games happened. Never been more disheartened at a MU basketball game.

Still to this day, the Iowa game was the only Marquette game I've left early. I was out of there by halftime.

My buddies and I always joke that the Bradley Center is our favorite bar in Milwaukee. I'll definitely miss it

I sold Butler this year. I was flying home from a convention in Florida. We landed at 7:00, I didn't want to try to rush my wife from airport pickup to the BC when I hadn't been home in 5 days. In retrospect, very glad we didn't rush there.

That St. John's was 2014...will correct it, not sure why I put 2015. It was also Buzz's last game at the BC.

But for those talking about heartaches and losses, try driving 6 hours with 3 Louisville fans to the Yum Center (and staying downtown Louisville for the weekend) to see MU cough up a 20+ point lead capped off by Buycks missing a break away layup when MU could have dribbled out the clock.

I'm old and watched the Warriors at The Arena, so I don't have as many Bradley Center memories as all youse young'uns. But a few ...

I knew the then-MU SID, Mark Johnson, from when he had been an assistant in Gopherland, and he set me and my little brother up for a coupla sweet tickets for the game McIlvaine blocked 13 shots. (BTW, my little brother was a kid in the Big Brothers program ... and we are still very close to this day.)

I covered the Georgia Tech-USC NCAA tourney game when Forrest, the player from Ga Tech, heaved in a miracle 3 for the win.

Several of my college buds and I got together to watch the MU-LSU game in 2012. Three days earlier, we had lost to UWGB, and we also had gotten killed by Florida and lost to Butler, so many were calling this already an important game for us. Davante, Vander and Cadougan had big games and it started us on a 6-game winning streak. And then my buds and I got hammered and ended up at Real Chili - first time I had been back there since I was a student. Yum.

Finally, there was a game in 2005 I didn't go to. My wife and I were driving back to Chicago after visiting our daughter at college (Lawrence U). The Warriors were playing Winthrop that night and we actually got off the exit ramp and started going to the BC to watch the game. But my wife was really tired and we still had to get back to Chicago, and I said, "All right, let's skip it. We don't need to spend this time watching us beat Winthrop by 30." Oops.

I know ... lame memories there compared to many of y'all. I've got plenty from The Arena, though!

Some that stand out for me - the first BE game against UConn, Novak was hitting 3's from the first row of seats - the Nova game last year - and of course, the bat game.  Funniest thing I have ever seen, the darkened arena, players diving to the floor, then putting towels on their heads, and playing the theme from Batman.

That Vandy game really sucked. We were supposed to be pretty good that year and had lost a heart breaker at Memorial Gym in Nashville the year before.

Having grown up in Nashville and been regular at Memorial Gym before coming to MU, I kinda figured this was going to be our moment. Some of my Vanderbilt friends from Nashville had come to Milwaukee for the game and I had expected it to be a blow-out. Just not the way it shook out.

The Iowa game was pretty bad as well and this year's Purdue game was nothing to write home to mother about either.

From the article. We have covered most of these but there was a lot of lean years in there. Any one remember the 1994 conference title that we won?  Man, the Great Midwest seems like a million miles away...KO and Cords really saved the program.

Jeez.  Marquette's life in the BC is 11 days older than my life.

Ditto.  MU moved into the BC about two months before I was born.

Davante Gardner automatic chant was a personal favorite, followed closely behind by the variety of sounds he would make when he flailed to try and get a foul call near the basket.

10 memorable MU moments at the BC from jsonline:

Dec. 2, 1988: In its first regular-season game at the Bradley Center, MU beat Rice, 76-60, behind 19 points from Trevor Powell

March 3, 1990: Tony Smith poured in 43 points on his "Senior Night," including 13 unanswered in the second half as the then-Warriors stormed back from a 12-point, first-half deficit to beat Butler, 90-70.

Dec. 31, 1994: Tony Miller compiled MU's first recorded triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in an 80-65 victory over No. 19 Wisconsin.

March 2, 1996: The Golden Eagles finished off a 16-0 record at home – the first undefeated season at the Bradley Center – with a 72-70 victory over Cincinnati.

March 8, 2003: MU became the first team other than Cincinnati to win the regular-season title in Conference USA (which formed in the 1995-'96 season) by virtue of a 70-61 victory over the Bearcats.

Jan. 3, 2006: MU's first game as part of the Big East was one for the ages. Senior forward Steve Novak scored 41 points and pulled down 16 rebounds as the Golden Eagles dominated No. 2 Connecticut, 94-79.

Jan. 20, 2006: Novak buried a two-pointer deep in the right corner with 1.1 seconds remaining to lift MU to a 67-65 victory over Notre Dame in the schools' first meeting as members of the Big East. According to a Bradley Center employee at the time, the crowd's volume reached 114.7 decibels after Novak's shot.

March 7, 2009: The largest MU crowd in Bradley Center history (19,144 fans) witnessed an emotional game that ended with the Golden Eagles falling to Syracuse in overtime, 86-79. It was the final home contest for seniors Wesley Matthews, Jerel McNeal, Dwight Burke and an injured Dominic James.

Jan. 26, 2013: If a team plays in a building long enough, some wacky stuff is bound to happen. While MU was trying to secure a victory over Providence, a bat kept dive-bombing the court and causing delays in the second half.

Jan. 24, 2017: MU had never beaten the No. 1 team in the Associated Press top 25 until coming back from a 17-point deficit to earn a 74-72 victory against Villanova.

In no particular order.

Best MUBB Bradley Center Moments (In Person)
1.) Waiting in line before the Wake Forest game in 2003. It was lawless. People were straight up hammered and were throwing whiskey bottles into the air. Despite the terror and obnoxiousness, it was also the first realization that the team was big time.
2.) Rushing the floor after beating Cincinnati on Senior Day 2003 to win C-USA title outright and postgame banner-drop.
3.) Dameon Mason's buzzer-beater against Louisville in 2004.
4.) Waiting in Line starting at 9:30 AM for MU's first Big East game, being awestruck that #2 UConn was even on the Bradley Center floor instead of Tulane or East Carolina, then going crazy when Novak hit a shot from basically half-court and MU took them to the shed.
5.) Steve Novak's game-winner against Notre Dame in 2006. Still the loudest I've ever heard that gym.
6.) Coach Crean inviting the die-hards in to watch shootaround before the Georgetown game in 2006. Had us line up on the baseline to "practice rushing the floor for when we win." Ousmane Barro ended up jumping over me.
7.) Beating Pitt on College Gameday.
8.) Walloping ND by about 30 in 2008.
9.) Stumbling into Marquette-Seton Hall in 2011 (a rare Saturday night game) after spending the day going on the 11AM Miller Tour, the 2:30 Lakefront Tour, and the 5:00 Milwaukee Brewing Company Tour. That was a happy game.
10.) Jae Crowder's Throat Slash Game

Worst MUBB Bradley Center Moments (In Person)
1.) Losing to Louisville on National Marquette Day in 2003. Reece F***ing Gaines.
2.) The Saint Valentines Day Massacre in 2004, when MU lost to Memphis by 18. Memphis set their program record by making 16 three-pointers.
3.) While on the subject of 2004, losing at home to TCU was also pretty awful.
4.) Somehow losing to North Dakota State in 2006.
5.) Jerry F***ing Smith in 2007.
6.) Arriving at the 2010 Wisconsin game in the trunk of a car (we had 10 people to move and only one sober driver after a kegs and eggs morning). Shared the trunk with one other person and a bag of golf clubs. MU promptly turned in a listless performance against the Badgers.

Some very good BC moments, starting with KO teams playing ND and Michigan early in his time here. But as a ball fan, every game Wade played was a joy to watch. He was unreal and I really enjoyed watching him from day one.
