Title: Who Wins the Big East?
Post by: wadesworld on February 06, 2018, 07:52:06 PM
Nova beat Xavier at home.
Nova lost at Butler, won at Providence
Xavier lost at Providence, won at Butler

Nova still has the return trip to Xavier.

Xavier has a fairly favorable schedule (by Big East Standards), with road games against Creighton, Georgetown, and DePaul and home games against Nova, Seton Hall, and Providence left.

Nova has home games against St. John's, Butler, DePaul, and Georgetown but have to go on the road to Providence, Xavier, Creighton, and Seton Hall left.

A tie in the standings at the moment but Nova has 1 less loss.  They have to go to Xavier and have 3 other very tough road games left, plus a home game against a Butler team that has won 3 straight against Nova, plus they are without a starter for probably all of the regular season.

Two legitimate top 5 teams with aspirations to cut down a number of nets in the next 2 months.  Should be a very entertaining race to the finish.

We win the conference tournament. But nova wins the regular season.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nova doesn't lose another game this season.

That wouldn't surprise me.  They are awesome, talented, balanced, experienced, and well coached.  But it also wouldn't surprise me (or maybe I should say shock me) if they lost 3 more games.  Butler's had their number and they get them.  And road games at Providence, Seton Hall, Xavier, and Creighton are all tough.  And the Booth injury hurts.

I wouldn't be surprised if Xavier won out, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they lost 3 more either.

The Big East is freaking tough.  Even the top of the conference could possibly go down to about 70% of the league on any given night.

Yep, I agree.

Yup. Both X and Nova have big time trap games next Wednesday, too. Nova is @ Providence and X is home to Seton Hall.  With the quick turnaround to their game Saturday afternoon, I could see either dropping their Wednesday game.

I've got Nova. Jalen Brunson should be National Player of the Year. He likely won't be, but I'd take him over Trae Young. They are a complete team and the best Jay Wright has had thus far.

I'll take Nova, although I'm not so sure about the BET. Three games in three days is tough when you only go seven deep.  Plus if anyone gets a minor injury, Wright probably won't push it with a 1 seed likely locked up by then.

Regular season BET no matta

Regular season BET no matta
Then why play it?
They'll likely already have a 1 seed, but to guarantee the overall 1 Nova will want it.
X will likely need a BET championship to get a 1 seed.
4-5 other teams will be playing for seeding, and 3-4 teams will be desperate knowing that's the only way they get a bid.
I agree that BET isn't nearly as important as the regular season, and it usually only effects seeding, minimally at that.  But it is still three+ days of the best college basketball in the country, to say it doesn't matter is foolish.

The question is BE champion and not BET champion. That is why I said it didn't matter. If Nova was going to get a 1 seed they would have without winning BET. Now after losing to St. Johns they probably miss out.

Not sure.  I think Nova is still ranked no lower than 3 in next week's polls if they don't lose again before the end of the weekend.

Yes there seemed to be some upsets last night

I think they still end up at #2 assuming they don't lose on Saturday

My guess is...

1) Michigan State
2) Virginia (better loss than 'Nova)
3) Villanova
4) Xavier
5) Cincinnati

This morning the committee said Xavier and Villanova will be #1 seeds.  This conference is excellent, very strong historically with earlier Big East versions.

Personally,  I'd put Virginia #1 and Nova #2. I think there was that much separation between the top 3 and #4

MSU is ranked 11 in the "NCAA Tournament reveal."  Their playing in a mid-major conference is going to really hurt them.

I might've been too generous to Nova in selecting a Nova/Xavier split.  Xavier might win this thing outright.

Maybe they were underrated, after all?

Not an excuse but injuries seemed to hurt Nova as they are not deep.
