Saturday, January 27, 7:12 PM - Iowa at Nebraska
Sunday, January 28, 12:00 PM - Villanova at Marquette
He is working now on FS1, the Northwestern at Michigan game.
He keeps busy...but there are LOTS of businesspeople who travel just as regularly, and often much further between gigs.

Yah, but.....these people are not running up and down a basketball court trying to officiate young guys going very fast up and down. Huge difference. Physical versus mental.

Yes, but he's 50 years old, and there are much older guys running up and down the court with those kids. I'm 5 years older than Driscoll and I bike about 40 miles a day all summer long, and spend an hour a day on the NordicTrack or spinning bike all winter. Altogether, I might miss about 10 days a year.
So yeah, physical...but I'm not surprised he can do it.
The double T's ain't gonna call themselves, a'ina?
Guys reffing is not very physical. You rarely ever sprint. 20% of the time you jog. 50% walk and the remaining 30% is standing.

Agreed.
I ref youth basketball, mostly organized rec leagues. Last Saturday, I did 4 games, each about an hour long. I was on my feet a LOT more than an NCAA ref is. And there are only 2 of us, with a LOT more coverage responsibilities. And I'm 57 and, though not obese, am certainly not in Ners shape!
Reffing at the college level is mostly about positioning and judgment, very little about running.

Furthermore it's all over in two hours.

Then the issue is the ref...not his schedule.

A lot of them are. Would they get better if they traveled less and were fully employed by a conference or the NCAA? Probably. However that's not happening because it's more expensive that way. So referees are doing what they can to maximize income during a four to five month window.

Agree that conferences or the NCAA aren't likely to absorb the costs of employing officials. But if travel is considered an issue, they could impose minimum times between games.
It's an interesting dilemma though. On the one hand, I can see the argument for requiring more rest. On the other, I can see the argument for wanting the most experienced officials, instead of increasing the pool by using guys with less experience. I tend to favor the latter because I don't think the travel is unduly burdensome, but the debate is interesting.

We could moneyball his performance, like rest days between performances, miles between games, etc.. However, he is so terrible I don't think it will matter and he is not worth my time. If you hear someone yell "Driscoll you suck" at the BMO it is probably me. I say it at least once a game where he is reffing.
I actually prefer Driscoll to guys like Corbett, Luckie, and Anderson. He's good for a "look at me!" call every game, but tends to be pretty good overall.

Agreed. Another way of looking at it is that more qualified candidates could decide to become refs if the pay was better and/or the travel was less onerous.

Pomeroy has a rating scheme and Driscoll is #5 overall out of 200. He and Ogelsby have the lowest games worked on the list (although all are high).
Rating Games
1 Mike Eades 53.60 60
2 Keith Kimble 52.08 61
3 Roger Ayers 51.58 61
4 John Higgins 49.19 65
5 Pat Driscoll 48.38 52
6 Ted Valentine 48.02 59
7 Pat Adams 47.31 56
8 Ron Groover 46.31 58
9 Terry Oglesby 45.89 52
10 Jamie Luckie. 45.33 57
Driscoll wasn't even that bad Sunday. He seemed to be the equalizer and gave us what seemed like a semi-makeup call after Frolings screening call I believe. The bald guy who ran like he was high-stepping through tires was horrible though. Missed the Anim call directly in front of him after blowing his whistle non-stop throughout the game (called the Froling screen too).
Weird that when I see Driscoll I immediately think of John Michael Higgins and they are 4,5 in the rankings.

Jeez, you're right!
He DOES kinda look like Coach K.
Agreed Driscoll used to be in the same category as Higgins and Burr, and the latter two have retired, so you do the math.
But also agreed Driscoll wasn't his normal abysmal self Sunday.
Pomeroy's officiating rankings are determined by the average team ranking of the team's each officials does on their respective schedules. So a ref who does Villanova - Xavier is ranked higher than a ref who does St. John's and DePaul. Makes a touch of common sense that the refs getting the Nova - Xavier assignments is better than St. John's - DePaul assignments. So better than nothing I suppose, but far from a scientific rating method of any sort.
I googled Mike Eades to see if I recognized him. That led to me having one question. What is missing in someone's life that they set up and tweet under a parody Twitter account named for a college basketball referee? After 5-10 tweets I get the joke. There are 2,062 tweets
