Title: It's Winning Time
Post by: GGGG on January 28, 2018, 02:20:14 PM
Nine games left.  No more "yeah but" losses.

Hold serve at home (Butler, Providence, St. Johns, Creighton)

Win three on the road (Hall, St. Johns, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown)

rots of ruck, season more than half over, lots of losses

This was a winnable game. Get even B- Markus we win. Couldn't get the arch he needed in his shot after the first 3. Missed and 1 critical. Ugh.

Not blaiming this game in the reffing, but definitely a couple calls late in that game that a team like Nova gets on their home court. Not sure it makes he difference, but definitely would have been nice to know. Unfortunate.

5-4 is needed. 6-3 to not be a little nervous. Gonna be tough.

Yeah but it's a tough schedule.  7-2 down the stretch and they are in no problem.

Just get 6.  4 at home and 2 on the road or 3 and 3.

Yeah that'll work too.  Really hard to do if you don't win the next two.

Hauser took 6 shots and MH took a lot more, he looked tired and had no lift to his shot

Agreed.  I'm driving up from Chicago for Providence so we really need a big effort against Butler.

It's halfway through the  conference season. We are 4-5 and have six of our arguably seven toughest games out of the way (@Nova, @X, Nova, X @Providence, @Butler). I don't think any other Big East team has had to play X and Nova 4 times yet. Most difficult game left is @Seton Hall. Every other game is very winnable. Go 5-4 and we have a good shot at making the the dance. Go 6-3 and we are in. I like our odds.

Howard and Rowsey must stay out of foul trouble in order to get it done.  The two St. Johns games without Lovett should be wins, along with Depaul. The others at this point are toss ups.

6-3 gets you to 19. We need 20 I think to feel comfortable

19-12 (with losses at Hall, Creighton, Georgetown and first round of BET v. Butler) gets MU to an RPI of 46.

That's much better than its RPI last year when they made it as an at large. (61)

Total wins no matta. They never matta. All about computer numbers.

6-3: Definitely In
5-4: Good shot to get in. Need to avoid bad loss in BET and too many bracketbusters
4-5: Probably in. Would need to at least make it to BET semis and probably the championship game to feel safe

You think 8-10 in BE gets them in?

Team did well against the number one team in the country. We just have to keep battling hard each possession the rest of the way.

Still confident we will finish 3rd in the Big East and make it to second weekend of tournament. When the Big 3 are performing well we are hard to beat.

Team did well against the number one team in the country. We just have to keep battling hard each possession the rest of the way.

The problem with this, though, is that the big 3 have not been performing well together in conference play much. Sam disappears too often, and Howard and Rowsey seem to trade off playing poorly. We are far too inconsistent to have the outcome you're predicting.

Play like they did today and they will beat anyone left on the schedule.  Next two games are key.  No reason to lose at home the rest of the way.  Then I have to think they can get a road win versus DePaul, St. John's or Georgetown.  Get two and they are relaxing on Selection Sunday.

No. But 8-10 with wins over a team like St. John's and a team like Xavier in the tournament makes it possible but still not likely. Add in a win against a team like Seton Hall and a loss to Villanova in the championship and I think that will do it.

6-3 is dancing and the only question is the seed.   5-4 is nail biting time.   7-2 and MU ends up in the top half of the bracket.

7-2? No way. Would love to see it, but IMO this team will not go 7-2.
5-4 more likely.

Agree - Markus couldn't get it over the front of the rim - that front end of the one and one he missed barely got to the rim.

This was a winnable game. Get even B- Markus we win.

A "D" from Markus gives us a win. Unfortunate time for an "F", but he'll bounce back.

Truth.  Would have liked to see Markus nailed to the bench permanently after the 4th foul.  He didn't have it today.  Forced too much, shooting way too early in shot clock, didn't involve teammates, and killed the momentum in each of the halves after he was brought back in while the lineup of Rowsey, Cain, Sacar, Sam, Froling/Heldt rallied us back into the lead/tie.

Sometimes a coach has to recognize even superstars have off nights, and keep them on the bench (especially when playing selfishly.)

Not the way he was using them. The committee doesn't look at a team with a top 50 RPI and top 30 SOS and say "Well their computer numbers make them a no brainer but they didn't get 20 wins... "

Right. Or take a look at Nebraska. 20 wins gives them a projected RPI of 77, SOS 104.

Marquette 18 wins> Nebraska 20 wins

From Jan. 28 to Feb. 11 last year, we went 1-4, including home losses to Butler and Providence. Dropped us to 6-7 in the conference. Seemed like we were "toast." Lots of gloom and doom in ScoopLand.

Then we won 4 of 5 and, despite losing our first (and only) game in the BET, we ended up making the NCAAs with room to spare.

We played a tougher non-conference schedule this season, and have better RPI and kenpom to show for it.

So pardon me if I reject the "If we lost to Butler on Wednesday our season is over" thesis.

Realistically, yeah. Mathematically, no.

We are 4-1 against everyone else but Nova and X. I'd like to think that continues.
