Trae Young: "people forget [I'm only 19]"
Yea well, Markus was only 17 as a freshman. And he hasn't missed a free throw as an 18-year old sophomore.
So there.
What does this have to do with Markus? Or free throws?
The bar for Trae Young has been set much, much higher than it has been for Markus. The level of scrutiny for Young is much different. Poor comparison.
I agree with Trae.
Young took 14 shots and committed 9 TOs in the time it took me to read that initial post.

Doesn't have much to do with Markus, except for how much people dwelled on his age as a freshman. Markus is not the superstar that Trae is, and I'm not comparing their skills or scrutiny.
Just tossing out another unless thread while we wait for the 9-wait layover to end.
I could've (should've?) marked it as OT, but much of this week's discussion has been OT.

Gotcha. Makes more sense now. I know the feeling of growing restless lately.

I don't think that's just cause to call him a whiner.
And Trae definitely has a point, he is young and has room to grow. That said, I hope he isn't using the "I'm only 19" thing to drown out constructive criticism. Yeah, he can score like crazy, but watching the end of regulation and OT against Oklahoma State was rough. He just tried to do way way too much himself.
I swear there was an article within the last few years that stated high turnover rate among rookie PGs in the NBA was actually positively correlated with future success. It indicates they have a head for the game, how to make things happen, drive a team, etc. They're just a fraction late or quick, resulting in a TO. It's driving me crazy that I can't find it.
Trae Young also leads the nation in assist rate. I think he's going to be a star at the next level (an actually good version of Lonzo Balll), and I love his game.

Young went for 26 & 9 on 9 shots with 5 turnovers in their win over Kansas. He's going to have ups and downs like any player, but he still looks like the best player in the country.
My question would be who would people vote for if they had a NPOY vote, Young or Brunson? Young puts up spectacular numbers, but he's very much the "as Young goes, so go the Sooners" type of player. When he's good, they're good, but when he's bad, he's really bad and so is his team. Brunson is the model of consistency. 100+ offensive rating in every game, 12+ points in every game, never more than 3 turnovers, he is polished and pure, and the best player on the best team. That he is #3 in offensive rating per Pomeroy despite his high usage is insane.
His 137.3 ORtg is the highest of any player with 24%+ usage. He's only the fourth player ever to exceed 130 ORtg at that usage and the first high major (the others played at Wofford, Princeton, and Stephen F Austin).
Young is great, cartoon, video game level great, but it's crazy to me that Brunson is having one of the greatest seasons of the advanced statistical era and no one is talking about him for NPOY.

Good question. Brunson 1st team AA for sure, but I'd havae to go with Young. Oklahoma won 11 games last year. Nova won 32 last year, and has a lotto pick in Bridges on his team.

But how often is Young "bad?" I mean, is Oklahoma even in the NCAA Tournament without Young? They're ranked 12th in the country and if they beat Bama on Saturday they're probably back into the top 10 in the country in next week's polls.
Brunson is obviously awesome. But if you take him off Nova they're still a top...15? 10? team in the country. Take Trae off of OU and they're not even close to a top 25 team.
True but this isn't most valuable player, it's national player of the year. I don't think having a worse supporting cast should be a factor. I think Brunson is the better of the two this season IMHO.

In my opinion, Brew's point just goes to show how unreal Trae has been this year. Brunson has been incredible...yet nobody but Trae is even considered a candidate for NPOY.
Big Brunson fan. I actually chuckled out loud at that ESPN list that had Brunson ranked so low. Hell of a college player, and he will have a solid NBA career.
But I'd choose Young, and I think the voters will, too. His "regular stats" are off-the-charts good, and that's what most voters still focus on. I mean ... leading the country in scoring and assists on a top-15 team that wouldn't make the NCAAs without him? C'mon. His advanced stats ain't chopped liver, either.
Young is #1 in value add, Brunson #6. So at least one advanced stat favors Young.

You might be the only person in CBB who would not want him.
Yeah, I'd hate to have a Trae Young clone on next year's MU team.
That would mean spending a lot on travel and tickets to watch us play in the Final Four. What a bother!

Agreed, those guys are the worst. I remember some team ~15 years ago that lost to UAB (!!!!) in their conference tourney because their best player had double digit turnovers. I never watched that team play another game I was so disgusted.

Pomeroy has him at #1 for POY also, because he is relatively efficient for his staggeringly high volume. I just think there's a legitimate case for Brunson even with Young's remarkable season.
People are talking about Young leading the nation in points and assists, which has never happened before. But the efficiency Brunson is putting up at his usage rate and at the consistency he's been at also has never been done.
