Title: Markus for Big East POW
Post by: skianth16 on January 06, 2018, 09:08:19 PM
I've got to think he gets the conference BEast Player of the Week award this week, right? Averaging 40+ points per game with both games on the road is pretty impressive. Plus he's still got the FT streak going, which is pretty dang impressive too. Is anyone else in the running right now?

Not sure.  If we won, then for sure.  But at 1-1 might be tough.

Delgado with 40 pts, 27 rbs, 12 assists, 4 blocks, 2 steals in two wins might beat him out

I believe Markus now holds the MU Record for points in a 3 game span (which I seem to recall being discussed after Maui). 102 in his last three by my count. Unreal.

Unbelievable week by the kid. I am going to try and watch every second of this kid because he might not be here for long. Hat's off to him, it was gift watching him this week.

Let's hope he breaks that record on Tuesday.

Is he getting any sniffs from pro scouts right now? I love him and his game, but with his size and his iffy (to be polite) defense, he still seems like he's got some work to do to get to the next level.

He should test the waters after this year, just to get the scouts assessment. Nothing to lose in doing it. That said, I don't think he'd be a first round pick yet based on this year. Sure, he can score, but his defense and distribution needs to improve if he wants to be a first round pick.

His ball handling is quite poor.  The uncontested betwen the legs drible outof bounds n the late turnover seem to happen 1-2 times a game.  Gotten better but long way to go on the ball handling.  Elite shooter but the handle needs a ton of werk

What? Not sure if we're talking about the same person but his ball handling is the best on the team. Markus consistently drives through/past/around traffic like butter and we are seeing the team exploiting this more and more each game. Not saying he's perfect but I think you're putting way too much focus on a few bad plays.

Markus will never be able to defend in the NBA. He is a liability even in the college game (sad to say) and I'm not sure how much improvement you can expect... I think he works hard at it, he does make steals and effort plays but he is just very small... So easy to drive past him.

It also makes me wonder, since he is already pretty amazing offensively, how much more does he have to gain by staying at MU anyway? Wondering what others think on it. What if he gets a draftable grade?

Next year may be THE PG. On a great team. Can show his PG abilities, and improve getting to the line.

OK.  The talk is Markus is being compared to Young from Oklahoma, who is apparently one and done.  So therefore Markus is going pro.  Whatever.  I think his ball handling in the backcourt is pretty bad for a little guy, and he has to look down at the ball when dribbling left, like a grade schooler.    I'll let others guess his NBA future... but right now I assume he's a four year player for us who will continue to get better and improve his overall game, and perhaps grow taller?  But I love the national buzz around him and hope it continues.  If we are a bubble team, hopefully the committee goes for us because of his star power.  We will need every edge.  Thoughts?

Whoever is making that comparison is silly. Trae Young is 6'2, so he's already got size on Markus.  Add to that he's shown he's a capable PG and is averaging 10 assists a game.  He's getting very fair comparisons to Steph Curry.  I'm a huge Markus fan and think he's special, but his game is far less complete and the only similarity is scoring and range, and Young is even outpacing him in that.  I think Howard's comparable is more like Russ Smith from Louisville.

But, he's very young and can play 4 years and still be only 21 by the draft, so he has tons of time to put it all together.  Lets just enjoy the development.

Markus is a weak dribbler, especially against tight D or a press.  He doesn't create well for others.  His D is not good, and he struggles to avoid fouls.  Throw in that he's below 6' and only 18, and I have to imagine he has a lot to improve on next year.

Markus isn't being compared to Trae Young by any sane, rational person. His AGE is being compared because he is younger than Young, but in terms of being a complete player or NBA prospect it isn't remotely a debate.

Markus should win BEPOW this week. I don't care what Delgado did, 44.5 ppg is 44.5 ppg and matching an all-time Big East scoring record on the road and following it up with the second highest point total of the year in the league. Right now, the game highs read:

1) Markus Howard, 52 points
2) Markus Howard, 37 points

In back to back games in the same week, he gets it.

I agree with Brew, his week was historic and I think he gets it.  But it won't be the worst thing in the world if Delgado beats him out.  Whole team motivation for Tuesday.  I want Hall Baaaaad!

Regardless of the loss, there is no way that a guy who averaged 44.5 ppg and tied the BE single game scoring record doesn't win POW.

Agree.  Markus should be the pow and All BE and All American.  Why not?

If he does not win it, there should be an investigation. An unreal performance this past week.

Well seeing that Fox Sports spent the first 5 minutes of "Inside the Big East" talking about Markus, I'd say his chances of making POW are

Hadn't seen this posted. But Markus has Jay Bilas' attention after a couple monster games.
