Title: Journal Sentinel
Post by: Ron Paul on January 04, 2018, 03:31:11 AM
Markus Howard drops 52 tonight, ESPN, SB, SI and nearly every other national sports publication has a pretty large write-up about the game. I cannot even find a mention that MU played a game last night. The local coverage in Milwaukee is embarrassing.

It is literally the 4th headline on their site.

Not sure what others are seeing, but it's popping up for myself as the top headline.

Are you saying that it's not happening?

When I posted it wasn't on the site and even now isn't a top headline. It's the top headline under sports.

Attached picture from the front page of the site. I'd call it the #3 story?

The insecurity of the Marquette fan-base is stunning to me at times.

FWIW, the print version of the JS Sports Section has an article about the Bucks game with a picture of Giannis on the top left 2/3 of the page, and an article about MU and Howard on the top right 1/3 of the page.

To be fair, there are probably twice as many Bucks fans as Marquette fans, so the proportion seems about right.  They want people to buy and read the paper.

And probably 95% of Milwaukeans know who Giannis is; Markus, maybe 25%.

I'm more disappointed that Deadspin didn't pick it up, personally

It's still early.  Some of their writers might not even be out of bed yet.

I am disappointed (but not surprised) that my local Chicago TV news feed had a scroll this morning that listed every freaking Illinois college basketball score from last night- including places like Bradley and Western Illinois (plus Notre Dame, natch) - and no mention of Marquette or Markus.  If you didn't know better, you would never know that among private universities, Marquette is the out-of-state school with the mosst alums in Illinois Besides ND.

I don't think it's a case of insecurity. It's more of a fight of real news and what is fair.

Some have said there is more Bucks fans than MU fans. Sure. I'm willing to bet there are now.

I remember hearing that clown that left to Kansas City in Mike Wickett on WSSP saying in 2013. What will have a better TV rating MU vs Miami in the Sweet 16 or Kobe and Lakers at the Bucks. Well, the final results was MU with over a 15 TV rating and the Bucks game was something like a 0.8. In terms of viewers that 135,000 to less than 9,000. Talk about the talking head not even in the ballpark.

What's "fair" is what the marketplace dictates is "fair."  The Journal Sentinel knows their readership.

You're simply making this up. I'd guess there might be an anti JS bias in play and it doesn't matter how they cover it.

The Journal is bad news. Every time I buy an actual paper, which is often, I get pissed at myself for doing so. I was actually surprised the article was on the top half of the fold today.

Yeah.  No one knows what is important to their customers better than newspapers.

Wait a minute.... no that's right.

I think Ben Steele is doing a great job so far, especially if you follow his twitter.  He does a lot of stories in addition to just game recaps, also.

I was more amused that this morning on ESPN's NCAAM home page, I had to scroll down through SEVEN stories about Trae Young ( along with other miscellany about Duke, NC and Michigan State) before I found Markus's 52 point story.

They think they know, as you didn't follow up on my entire quote. I could go on, but I don't want this to go of the rails.

They know what they read.  The problem is that they can't get people to pay for it any longer.

Ben Steele is absolutely doing an amazing job covering MU. I would say almost at the same level as mattyV.

Bingo!
Newspaper readership is an at all-time high. It's just that a huge number of those readers aren't paying for the product.
The MU game is the lead story in the JS sports section ... which is exactly where it ought to be.

100% with you and Mom - Ben is doing a great job.  Follow Ben and #mubb and you have yourself covered.

i know people are kvetching over not getting 'respect' or 'visibility' but it's 2017, the MJS isn't going to drive that.

Comparing a regular season NBA game, that in all likelihood was not a nationally televised game, to an NCAA Sweet 16 matchup, that was nationally televised and part of one of the premiere sporting events in the US, is silly. Do you really think most people tuning in to that game were drawn by Marquette? Bad, bad comparison.
