Maybe this is a tradition Wojo should resurrect.

A different time. But it does seem that MU does better at basketball when the coach is a little bit (or lot) of a rebel. Maybe Wojo can break the mold and succeed as a choir boy at MU.
He (Al) didn't think his team could beat UCLA.
I had never heard that before. Didn't know Al ever said that.
New Milwaukee branding campaign, courtesy of Al:
"Milwaukee, where the freeze kills the bugs."

Al McGuire told my father that they had tried to play UCLA--anytime, anywhere--but John Wooden would not do it. I would never believe Al said that of UCLA. Al was a Travis Diener-like competitor. I am sure he thought his 1970-71 team could beat UCLA at a minimum.
Hank continued the official posed team photo and then another non-traditional picture.
Not sure if many remember the Circus team pic of 1980.

Would you consider Crean a rebel?
No. I also think he really only had one good year in 9.

Out of curiosity are you only determining that by post season success? Because the 02 season and 08 seasons had pretty fancy records
9 years. 190-96. 5 NCAA tourney bids. 1 NCAA tourney win outside of 2003. I think he was an above average coach and I appreciate how hard he worked for and to promote Marquette. I do not think he was a great or even 'very good' coach. I give him full credit for Wade and Diener and Novak and the amigos, etc. I am eternally grateful for the final four run. He game planned decently and got his teams to play hard. I criticize him for being unable to string together consecutive recruiting classes, develop bigs, and make in game adjustments. He was not a great defensive coach, either.
If, when Wojo leaves, MU was to hire a coach with Crean's resume, I think most would be glad we got an experienced coach but question if he would be able to elevate the program. Since he had been a head coach at two high major programs and only made the NCAA tourney 9 times in 18 years.
And I would never use 'rebel' to describe him.
Crean sucks
ND sucks

If, when Wojo leaves ...
Huh?
The way things are going as of late, I sure as heck hope not!
The coach who DOESN'T leave is the exception.
Was Kevin O'Neill a "rebel?" I don't think that's a word I would use to describe him. Intense? Yes. But rebel?
I would use "character" to describe Marquette's successful coaches. Not rebel

I'd go with rebel. He said what was on his mind most of the time and it often wasn't politically correct, and sometimes profane.
Anyone who doesn't default to "coach speak" but speaks their mind gets a rebel nod from me.

Buzz easily passes the charactor test, but wasn't a rebel. I think Al and O'Neill were both. Al was indisputably a rebel. Passing on the 1970 NCAA Tournament, the unifrom innovations and the feud with Rupp solidify that for Al. O'Neill doesn't have anywhere near that body of work, but he didn't fear ruffling feathers either.
Buzz for all his nuttiness was actually a bit of a suckup to the powers that be. His rise was really fueled by his cultivating good relations with pretty much everybody. He may have been the number one Huggy lover of his time.
"Marquette viewed the media guide as a recruiting tool to show off Milwaukee's culture."
Why did Marquette stop putting out media guides? I think they stop publishing them the season Wojo took over.
If they weren't selling enough print versions anymore to justify the expense, they should at least put out a digital version we can download. I liked the history and all the statistics.

One can download all the historical stats from gomarquette.com. Did we make a conscious decision to not produce media guides any longer, even digital ones?

I think it was a year or two before Wojo got here, but I did like them. Very well produced and one more reason to be a STH.
My word is creative, Al was an artist, he was in the garment industry, Bo was an artist as well. Al was an artist as a sports announcer. I see little creativity in sports these days. Golf, football, college basketball, it is mostly formula corporate marketing, branding to use the new jargon. Just look at how the announcers are mostly doing nothing but predictable yelling.
There are exceptions, let's see Jim McIlvaine get a national job, ha.
