Amazing depth to his career. And we were all fortunate enough to see how unique of a man he was, being able to pen a one man play. Forget the subject, just the exercise of that alone is impressive.
Dick Enberg was a friendly voice. Miss him already.

People use the term "All time great" a bit too loosely but for Dick Enberg it's a perfect fit - RIP, give our best to Al!
Dick, Al and Billy Packer were the best college hoops broadcast team ever.
Al with his colorful stories (Shoes Huffman), Billy with his depth of knowledge and contrast to Al's style, and Dick the polished broadcast journalist who held it all together and kept Al and Billy from killing each other.

The Marquette connection with Al was great. One of the best ever. An amazing play about Al McGuire that Mr. Enberg wrote, if it comes around again please take the time to see it.

He was one of my favorite announcers back in the day and his match with Al was one of the most innovative ever.

He was a great broadcaster. Vin Scully best ever for baseball, but no better sports generalist than Dick.
I'll always remember him as the voice of Mattel's Talking Football when I was a kid.
"A leaping interception!...He's going to go all the way! TOUCHDOWN!"
For radio, nobody called a better baseball game than Ernie Harwell.
Top 10 sports broadcasters of all time:
1) Vin Scully -- Nobody is even close. This guy was the greatest. He brought major league baseball to Southern Californians and was an incredible gentleman.
2) Dick Enberg -- He was a fixture in anyone's house who watched sporting events. He was great with Merlin, Al and a host of others.
3) Jack Buck -- Grew up on his Cardinals broadcasts. A friendly voice who was as outspoken as Harry Carey but without the obnoxious showmanship. Knew the game inside and out.
4) Howard Cosell -- He changed sports broadcasting. Obnoxious. Difficult. Hard on the ears. But he was a prime time fixture in America for more than 20 years.
5) John Madden -- Smart guy who knew football and had the common touch.
6) Pat Summerrall -- Yeah, this is a reach. But he was THE voice of CBS for years. Whether with John Madden or Tom Brookshire, or at golf tournaments, his voice was pleasant and his presence real.
7) Max and Jim -- When the Packers were really bad, these guys were at their best. Max more often than not was irreverant, out of touch and a hoot.
8) Ray Scott -- As the television voice of the Lombardi Packers, he was the epitome of brevity. "Starr... Dale... Touchdown." That was it. Never let himself get in the way of the game.
9) Curt Gowdy -- For more than two decades, NBC did not have a big event where Curt was not the play-by-play guy. He was the play-by-play guy for our 1977 NCAA Championship. Was awful that night. His best two gigs were baseball and the American Sportsman.
10) Milo -- Milo Hamilton. Was with the Cubs when he got "Harryed" out of town. Great announcer with the Braves when they came to Atlanta and later with Houston. Called Henry Aaron's 715th Home Run on Braves Radio (Scully called it on Dodgers radio and not sure who had it on national television that night)
OK, I admit throwing Max and Jim in was provincial, but they really were a hoot. Will never forget as a long, long-suffering Packer fan, Jim proclaiming in 1996, "The Vince Lombardi Trophy is Coming Home..."
Left Al out because I can't be objective about Al.
Vince Lloyd, Lou Boudreau, and Milo made for good radio as a team.

At the top for sure. Sports fans out west were lucky. Vin Scully, Dick Enberg, Chick Hearn, Bob Miller. Four Hall of Famers, some of them in multiple sports.
Chicago and New York have had gems, but hard to beat that trio when two are considered the best ever at their sport (Scully and Hearn) and the other (Enberg) was inducted into three Hall of Fames (NFL, MLB, Basketball). Miller was a hockey only guy, but NHL Hall of Fame nevertheless.
Did not realize until this morning that Enberg received an honorary degree from MU in 2009.
