Every year I like to make and try a new batch of holiday hootch. Last year, it hot buttered rum to mixed acceptance. Any long time family favorite drink recipes to share?

For the odd numbered years when we spend the holidays with my side of the family: a traditional egg nog, with egg whites, heavy cream, ice cream, brandy, bourbon, rum and brandy.
For the even-numbered years when holidays are with my in-laws: Everclear, neat.
Bottle of fancy microbrew. Opener.
Christmas Manhattan
5 ounces of Buffalo Trace
2 ounce sweet vermouth
3 dashes Angostura Bitters
6 cherries
Egg Nog is a staple. Done the glogs and spiced wines (down votes). Golden Pheasants. Leaning toward an egg nog martini, Mexican Hot Cocoa, or a Peppermint recipe unless one of you jamokes have a classic.

And New Years.
And Easter.
And 4th of July.
And Fridays.....

If you live in its distribution area, Oberweis Dairy has amazing egg nog. Hands down the best store bought egg nog I have ever had.
I make my own mulling spices. I go down to the Spice House on Old World Third street and buy the whole spice pods and take out my aggressions on them with the back of a meat cleaver.
Put that in some apple cider, simmer for 10-15 minutes, and put it in a mug with a shot of cinnamon-infused vodka (which I also make). Mmmmm....

I tend to just go straight vodka throughout the night with her Sister's wife. It makes the time go by much faster and me and her have a blast while the family all gathers to read the story of Jesus for the 3rd time that night.

Let me help you out with my standard response to the Jesus story...

Tried something similar last night called a Candy Cane...a little advance test before the neighborhood progressive dinner this weekend, only substitute vanilla rum for the vodka, and white chocolate liquor instead of Kahlua. It did not turn out well IMO

That is the back up. The family recipe with the raw eggs better, although Ober damn close.
Tomorrow night we're doing free hot apple cider from the coffee machine thing down in our apartment's lobby, and adding shots of Fireball.

You use bourbon instead of rye for manhattans? Try the same recipe with templeton rye (small batch). I believe it will become your new Christmas Manhattan.
Cheers.
From scratch egg nog. Alton Browns aged is an awesome recipe.
Beat 12 egg yolks with 3/4 lb of sugar until a creamy texture. Grate in fresh nutmeg to taste.
Measure out 1 cup each of bourbon, dark rum & brandy. Add to a pitcher. Add 2 cups each of heavy cream, half and half, whole milk.
Slowly add egg / sugar mixture and stir to combine.
Put into lidded mason jars or covered pitcher in the fridge for about 2 weeks - 3 is best.
Then get your holiday cheer on!
