Title: Georgetown non-conference schedule
Post by: Marcus92 on December 01, 2017, 03:15:21 AM
Georgetown's non-conference schedule includes no fewer than 8 sub-300 ranked teams (according to KenPom.com). Plus one ranked #298. I know they're rebuilding, but that's totally pathetic.

Yep. This was discussed here a while back when Ewing decided to withdraw from the PK80. His excuse at the time was that he didn't want his team to get blown out. DePaul took their place.

Way to show confidence in your team and their ability to grow, coach Ewing!

They'll likely enter conference play at 10-1 and still be nowhere near the top 25

Georgetown's non-con schedule (the first 5 have been wins):

Home against Jacksonville  (currently 3-5 in the Atlantic Sun)
Home against Mt. St. Mary's  (currently 2-5 in the Northeast)
Home against Maryland Eastern-Shore  (currently 2-5 in the MEAC)
at Richmond  (currently 1-6 in the A-10)
Home against Maine  (currently 1-6 in the America East)
Home against Coppin State  (currently 0-6 in the MEAC)
Home against Howard  (currently 1-7 in the MEAC)
Home against NC A&T  (currently 5-2 in the MEAC - 2 wins against D-2 programs)
Home against Syracuse  (obviously a tough game)
Home against North Texas  (currently 4-4 in the CUSA - should be G'town's second toughest non-con game, though 2 wins against D-2 programs, 1 win against SWAC team, and 1 win against MEAC team)
Home against Alabama A&M  (currently 0-7 in SWAC)

That is only 1 game against a power 6 school, 1 against the worst team in the A-10, which is struggling this year, 1 against a middling CUSA team, 1 against a winless team in the SWAC - the worst conference in bball, 4 games against MEAC teams - the second worst conference in bball, 1 against the worst team in the America East, 1 against a middling team in the Atlantic Sun, and 1 against one of the worst in the Northeast.

Not good.

I think pulling out of the PK80 was lame.  I think setting up a non-conference schedule like this, when the team isn't going anywhere this year, isn't a terrible idea.

It's terrible for Georgetown's RPI, but great for us and the rest of the league. I'm hoping they go 11-0 and come to Milwaukee for their first loss as a belated Christmas present.

This.  Your opponents' record is worth 2x your opponents' opponents' record.  As long as they win, let 'em feast, I say.

Wish DePaul would play this schedule every season.

According to ESPN (take it how you will) Georgetown is currently rocking the worst SOS in college basketball. I would rather have our record, maybe if Georgia was in the W column, with our SOS then undefeated with a SOS of 351. Sure 6-0 looks flashy to a few AP voters who gave Georgetown some votes, but there are some clueless voters out there. They could go into Conference play 11-0 and will still be the second worst team in the Big East. Wont be a quality win when we whoop up but sure will help our RPI

Actually, to just one AP voter:  Doug Doughty of The Roanoke Times, who saw fit to rank the Hoyas at 22nd.  I'd like to think that someone at the AP is talking to him about revoking his voting rights, but we all know that isn't happening.  I'd imagine he may have them in the top 20 if they win against Howard (RPI 342) and North Carolina A&T (165).  Amazingly, Georgetown (180) will be an RPI underdog against A&T.

Fun RPI facts:
