Another legend passes. It will be lost in the reaction to Las Vegas. And it is only one man. But a legend, nonetheless.
Phenomenal songwriter, Defiant Ones is worth watching just for the Petty/Nicks story.
Today sucks.

Personal favorite of mine. Terrible news. Just saw him recently, and still sounded great.
I was never a big fan, but mid-to-late I went to see him in concert at the New Haven Coliseum and the show was great. I knew just about everything he played the whole night. I went and purchased the Best Of CD right after the show.
October not off to a great start. RIP.
Who'd have guessed Bob Dylan would be the last Traveling Wilbury standing?

Didn't Eric Burdon join them at one point? Or am I mis-remembering that.
One of the things that made Petty so great, in my mind, is I had no idea how old he was. I'm 38, and he's just been apart of my life as long as I can remember. From youth, to high school, through college and being an adult, he just had music you knew. It never dated poorly, you didn't have to love him, but he was just always a part of entertainment culture.
Whoa ... stop the presses. TMZ reporting that Petty isn't dead yet and previous reports are erroneous.

I saw that too. I hate to be pessimistic, but seems like just a matter of time.

Wow ... I forgot all about him. I
think he's alive.
I don't mean to make light of it but what is Summerfest going to do for the mainstage for half of its run? Too soon?
Latest report is that he was still alive earlier today, but that life support was withdrawn this afternoon. RIP

Tom Petty is the Jesus Christ we do not deserve.
Big fan, first saw him with Dylan and he (and the Heartbreakers) stole the show. "Refugee" in my top 20 rock/pop songs of all time. The guy just wrote hit after hit after hit.
RIP tom
RIP frank hamblen, former bucks, lakers and bulls assistant coach passes at the age of 70
What a heartbreaker.
He'll be one of those artists I regret not seeing while they were alive. Thought about it this past summer, but had to work and figured he'd be back next year. Damn :'(
Was fortunate enough to see Petty at Summerfest with Pearl Jam 10+ years ago. Amazing, amazing show.
"American Girl" has to be at or near the top of overused songs that still remains an all-time great song.
Love me some Tom Petty. A true American entertainment icon. He will be missed, but his music will live on.

I was talking about it with my wife. I'm pretty sure I saw him in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s. Once each decade, plus an extra time when he was touring with Bob Dylan (listening to those guys talk to each other between songs was very funny, as they both have that whiny almost indecipherable speaking voice).
Favorite show was in Milwaukee in 1981 or 1982, I think. We had seats on the floor at the Mecca, but they were near the back and the view wasn't great. Paul Carrack and Nick Lowe were the warm-up band and were great. They hadn't sold seats on the side or rear of the stage. After the opening act finished, we walked up and sat in the first row of the deck right next to the stage. As good seats as I have ever had for a show, and only a few other people figured it out and joined us.
RIP Tom Petty
As a tribute to Petty, for the rest of this season the Packers secondary will be leaving great receivers wide open.

Full Moon Fever was released late my junior year at MU. I listened to it constantly that summer and into my senior year.
I listened to it again tonight for the first time in many, many years. And still remembered pretty much every lyric.
Us LA natives considered him ours. He was definitely apart of my life's soundtrack. I took the kids to see him in Pasadena in June and took my Dad to see him in London in July.
I Need to Know when The Waiting for QG to be Free Fallin' Into The Great Wide Open of Marquette University will come to The End of the Line. Even the Losers will admit that It's Good to be King when we're Runnin' Down a Dream and Learning to Fly on our way to a national title.

Would he be going to 'Ville if Pitino had offered him an American Girl?

That ship sailed when 'Ville told Rick Don't Come Around Here No More. Don't Do Me Like That, Yer So Bad I'm havin' a Breakdown, said the slick one.

Honey, he is a cracker from Gainesville. We Southerners are calling dibs.
The bassist from the Heartbreakers, Howie Epstein, was from Milwaukee. OD'd on heroin a 10-12 years ago.
This is pretty awesome.

Not considered by critics to be among his best but it's one of my favorites.

My whole family, myself included, are big Tom Petty fans and very sorry to hear for his death. My youngest son was at the FL/LSU game on Saturday and said the video did not do justice to the crowd signing. He said it was a very bittersweet moment.
Accidental overdose.
"Petty's family said he'd been struggling with a painful hip injury that had worsened as he'd continued to tour."
OK.
"He had fentanyl, oxycodone, temazepam, alprazolam, citalopram, acetylfentanyl, and despropionyl fentanyl in his bloodstream at the time of his death."
Well that seems a bit excessive...

How about.... maybe stop the tour and get treatment?
