Who were some of the teams that MU beat out for some of the JUCO players that played at MU? I believe Kentucky was in on JFB. I think I heard UNC tried to get in on DJO but by the time it became public he would be eligible earlier than expected Buzz already knew and was way ahead of the pack. Who did we beat out for these guys plus Jae, Fulce, Buycks?
Buzz sure knew how to recruit JUCO's!!!

Jae was another special case since his first year of JUCO was at a school where the credits wouldn't transfer, so many didn't realize that he was loading up on credits in his second year so that he'd be eligible as a junior. Huggins was interested initially and may have been the one to tell Jae that his first year credits were dodo.

Kentucky is always mentioned with Butler, but I am not sure they were seriously recruiting him.

Define seriously. It was more than letters and the obligatory phone call. Were they chasing him like a five star HS senior? That I don't know.

Remember, this is the Billy Gillispie era at Kentucky. He landed some good recruits, but he wasn't pulling in 5 stars at will like Calipari is today.

He was. Huggins told Jae he was at a school not 'recognized' by D1, therefore his credits would not transfer.
Jae thanked Higgins by putting up 28 points in his first Big East game......vs WVU.

And a few years earlier, Buzz was working for Gillispie at Texas A&M, so they may have had a liking for similar recruits, especially Texas recruits.
Buzz was the best JUCO recruiter in the history of the game. I don't think that's a hyperbolous statement. I can't think of a single other coach who hit on that many JUCOs in such a short window.
Kansas was in on DJO.
Buycks originally committed to Butler out of high school before not qualifying. I do believe Butler and Iowa St were also in on his JUCO recruitment but that Memphis was the biggest threat and he took an official there IIRC. May be confusing him with Duane though who I know for sure looked at Memphis
Fulce was always a buzz guy. Originally committed to TAMU and then changed to UNO when buzz went there for a year and so I do believe even in the recruiting community it was always assumed he would follow buzz to MU.
Jameel Mckay the big competition was actually Crean at IU, he did take an official there shortly before commiting to MU.
Jae for some reason Georgia Tech and Baylor stand out to me, don't really remember that recruitment.
Jimmy was definitely Iowa St and billy clyde at kentucky I think.
TAMU
Al knew his way around a JUCO as well. Long history of big time JUCO's for Al.
Buycks committed to Bradley before going the JUCO route.
With DJO, Buzz was the only one that expected him to be eligible right away and not need a second year. I think he had some pretty big schools on him, but all expected him to need a second year at JUCO.

Huggins(at Cincy) and Tarkanian(UNLV) had better success with Juco's
way back in the day, Ralph Miller then at Iowa, brought in juco John Johnson, originally from Messmer. Johnson averaged 19 as a junior and 28 per game as a senior and was picked 7th in the NBA draft.
After Johnson's big junior season along came juco Fred Brown from Milw Lincoln. Freddie averaged 18 a game as a junior, and with Johnson gone Brown put in 27.6 a game, leading to his being selected 6th in the NBA draft.
The big question I have is will Buzz offer Nick Noslowiak a champ at redemption at VPI? That would be a tremendous story if it happened.

Averaged 8.9 with poor shooting in some Kansas JUCO? Not even a D1 prospect aiina?

Given Nick's history, the fact that he's apparently clean and enrolled in college is a good thing. He's already a success story.
I recently saw that Noskowiak is at a different JUCO this season (Otero in Colorado). https://twitter.com/OteroBasketball/status/898340406089220097
Interesting path, to say the least - two D1 schools (sorta) and three JUCOs so far.

OK. Great. But that's not really the point.
I thought Butler was a "throw in' when Buzz sign Juco Joe Fullce and was not highly recruited.

You thought wrong.
Jimmy Butler's recruiting profile in 2008:
Not much info out there on him because he's a JUCO, but he's a good player. 6'5, somewhat skinny. Truly a combo guard, he's probably more natural as a 2, but has good court vision and can play the 1 as well. Good shot from the perimeter, can score in bunches. Was Tyler's leading scorer this year and just had some absurd games. NJCAA All American Honorable Mention.
No academic issues, full qualifier out of high school, wanted to go to Mississippi State but they ran out of scholarships and he chose to go the JUCO route rather than signing with a low D1 school or going to a Prep School. Currently has offers from Kentucky, Clemson, Mississippi State and Iowa State. He's already made visits to Mississippi State and Iowa State.

Otero looks like they have a very good program. Hopefully, if Nick does well gets some visibility.
