Title: Bob McGinn Retiring
Post by: GGGG on May 03, 2017, 09:38:12 AM
The longtime Packer beat writer who wrote the best "I don't give a sh*t what they think" articles about the team.  Too bad.  Real throwback.

If this column about the Packers' draft was his last, it was typically well researched, well written...and just a little salty.

Gardner also retiring. Me thinks we're about to lose a great MU beat reporter to the Bucks.

Just more proof that the MU beat is a springboard job.
If MU wants to be a destination beat like the blue blood beats, it has to step up its game.

The only places where college athletics trumps pro sports is in places without pro sports.

Chick's family lives in Nashville.  For many years I would commonly hear how Vol football (and the SEC more broadly) was THE focus.  And then the Titans arrived and played in a Super Bowl.  And with the exception of my Vol alum BIL, I don't recall hearing that again.

I love(d) reading McGinn, I don't think there is anyone better at covering their team or the NFL.

Sad to see him go, but he's got a well-deserved retirement ahead of him. I think he's 65. He's got lots of good years to enjoy left. Good for him.

Sorry, guess I did need the teal.  ;)

Here's how old I am: I remember when McGinn was considered a young, up-and-coming sportswriting star.

I'm not sure I've read anything he's written in the last 10 years, but he used to be very good and everybody here seems to think he still is.

McGinn is  still very good, but in his old age, has turned a bit "holier than thou". He is universally respected as a writer, though. His draft pieces are always great, though you never know how much he gets taken to the cleaners by scouts that want their guy to drop. Still entertaining reads. He and Gardner will both be missed

Really? When was the last time you were in Nashville.

The Vols are still kings in Nashville, followed closely by the Predators. If the Titans get their act together, maybe.....

No doubt losing has hurt the Titans in recent years.

I don't agree that McGinn is a great writer. He has had an axe to grind against Rodgers since day 1 and said last year that he wasn't a lock for the HOF.

Some of the stuff he does is pretty good, particularly regarding getting scouts' take on the draft and GB's talent compared to other teams, but he often comes off as holier than thou and an overly critical know-it-all.
