Fun stuff.

That. Will. Never. Get. Old.
Impossible to watch without getting goose bumps. Things that always stand out to me. How easily DG got bumped off leading to that back door lay up. How rarely MU hit consecutive 3 pt shots that year. How Buzz never seemed fazed, subbing in Jake Thomas for Lockett, which kept Davidson from sagging and helping on Vander's shot. Vander finishing with his left hand, which he couldn't have done a year earlier. Huge pick from DG, taking up so much space. How much the checking of the game clock gave MU the equivalent of a time out and how well it was used. Laughing as I remember how Buzz was always accused of not being able to draw up inbounds plays.
Oh, and Davidson didn't choke. One turnover, made their free throws, made their one shot attempt. MU seized it.
Watching replays of the final minute or so of that game still gives me chills.
We had absolutely no business coming back to win that game - very similar to the feeling I felt after we beat Villanova this season. I LOVED the comebacks, of course, I just feel we "got away with one" each time.
The fact that we somehow came back to beat Davidson doesn't mean those who foresaw an upset were wrong.
Indeed, those who picked Davidson were pretty darn smart. But for one of the great comebacks in NCAA tourney history, they would have nailed a 14-3 upset.

I threw my phone at the wall without about 2 minutes left in that game. Shattered it. I was livid.
It was a roller coaster of emotions. Vander's shot was something special. Crazy..IIRC, we didn't hit a three until Jamil nailed the elbow three with about a minute left.

Well, technically, that's exactly what it means. Davidson put a scare into MU, and perhaps should have won. But they didn't ... hence, those who foresaw an upset were wrong. Those who foresaw a competitive game that Davidson could win were right.
Was at Annex for this one. Nearly walked out a few times. Stuck around, but couldn't bear to watch our final possession. Was made aware of the result by deafening cheers from the overflow crowd in there. Chills just typing this.
That game, and the ensuing Butler game, aged me about five years.
The next weekend, when I knew ten minutes in that we would beat Miami, and about ten minutes in that we weren't beating Syracuse, was much better on my health.
I had chem lab that day. We were all watching the game on our phones.
They were already losing by that point but I remember running back to Straz after class was over to watch the rest of the game only to be ridiculously disappointed when they didn't make a run to get back into it like I expected.
I'm terrible at finishing watching games on TV if I know Marquette is going to lose but for whatever reason, I decided to stick it out because it was, what I thought to be the last game of the season.
To say I was happy when they ended up winning was an understatement. I also remember yelling at my TV "NO JAMIL" when he shot that last 3.

Funny editing, but inaccurate.

MU-Butler from 2013. Weird seeing Smith miss that last shot knowing he lost his battle with cancer.
Jamil does such a good job on defense on that last in-bounds play. Plays off of Smith. Shades the cutter running to the ball like he is going help Junior if the pass goes there. As soon as the in-bounder makes the slightest twitch to go to Smith, Jamil is already recovering so that by the time the ball arrives, he is square to Smith with his hands up. Tremendous defensive move. This game, as well as the end of the Davidson game, show why Jamil was so frustrating as a senior. Very good when playing as part of a cohesive whole. Unable to be 'the man'.
Totally forgot about VB's random 3 pointer in that barrage as well. Remember both of JW's, and VB's layup...but out all of those shots, I think Vander's 3 pointer was the most WTF moment.

Fair enough. It went into the "good try" category.
Those who picked Davidson in their brackets were wrong. Those who bet on Davidson, taking the points, were very, very right!
I do find it amusing the joy many took in Vander's game winner that day and BE final, for that matter. For a brief moment a lot of negative feelings about a 19 year old kid were forgotten and he was loved by most. Unfortunately for Vander, many of the haters decided to hate again down the road.

It is amusing, I guess, but "sad" is probably the word I'd use more. I'm always amazed at the vitriol some folks aim toward college kids. And I'm not holding myself up as some paragon of virtue - in retrospect, I regret some of the way I said things about Derrick Wilson, even though none was "personal" and all were basketball related.

IMO Vander Blue received the most "personal" attacks I have witnessed as a fan. While I do not care to rehash the VB story/era, I found much of it disgusting and the disgust would be shared with those under a very wide net.
I was at a friends house and I took a rally shot of Tequila and then Jamil hit the first 3. Then I took another one and Vander hit another. Then I took a third one and Jamil hit the 3rd three. Then I took a fourth one and Vander made the layup. I took one for the team 4 times...then it was home and off to bed.

Absolutely surreal. Special experience to be there. I can even see myself in the video. And let's not forget that the Butler game two days later was just as great.
Isn't it nice to be in the tournament again?

Christ, it didnt even compute that the year of the Davidson game was the last year we were dancing. Crazy how long ago that seemed (was).
It is great to be back playing in NCAA again. Hope it is a start of long, successful trend.
I was listening to the end of the Davidson game in my car driving home after work, I suspect I got some strange looks from others on 894 when I was fist pumping the roof(ceiling?) after each score starting with Jamil's.
I was watching the Davidson game with a bunch of Badger fans during our annual March Madness get together.
I was swearing up a storm in the final minutes. Even rationalizing the season was still a success with the BE title.
First three, I thought ok we needed that. Now we got an outside shot. Second three, hey we're in business! Third three, OMG we might pull this off.
As the turnover happened I stood up, cheering when the ball went out of bounds. Thinking, OMG! Common and finish.
I leaped in the air when Vander made the lay up. What a rush! Get chills whenever I watch the ending.
I actually turned off the Butler game in the first half. Almost didn't watch the rest but came back at halftime after cooling off.
What a fun 2nd half! I thought we were going to blow it right at the end but thankfully we held on.
Really wanted to face Indiana. Syracuse was a tough matchup for us given the lack of shooters. When we beat them that year it was a perfect storm. Really thought we could take Indiana and felt Buzz would out coach Crean. Still a helluva ride that year!

I was honking my horn on Rt. 83 for about a half-mile after Vander's final shot.
All this nostalgia about a first round NCAA win and none about a BEAST Regular Season title that included a banner. That's proof enough that Brew and others are liars in this thread: http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=53837 (http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=53837)
Chick has told this story before but I'll repeat. She wasn't able to come down until the weekend. So for 38 minutes I'm quietly thinking that it might be a long, sad drive home alone on Friday. And I had been told to be on absolute radio silence as she planned to watch the 'tape' when she got home. So we all know the finish and you can imagine the post party. Well, eventually the hyperventilating ended in the Marriott? (can't remember the hotel brand) down in Lexington after the game but the party continued and everyone knew she was watching delayed.
Yep, right on queue about an hour later 'Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!' over my speakerphone. I remember everyone getting a big kick out of that.
Those words from When Harry Met Sally or wuz dat, I'll have watt she's havin', hey?

Glow left out the part where he got his cancer diagnosis a couple of days before his planned trip to Lexington. He contemplated not going, but decided that a couple of nice MU wins would be good for his psyche.
As the Davidson game wound down, he was wondering why God was piling on in terms of his personal misery. And as the story goes, there was a happy ending on all fronts. He has been cancer free for 4 years now.

Nice, way to make good use of that hotel
Watched the end of the game in the waiting room of my clinic. Patients there had a hard time reading me and figured out I was a MU fan and alum. Made their day watching me jump up and down when Blue hit the last shot

I have the consolidated version of the last 2 minutes saved on my phone's home screen as "The Miracle Minute". Watch it from time to time when I need a pick me up.

Normally I'd go with a "+1" but that just feels inadequate. I think I was then more a fan of Vander because of the vitriol our own fans directed at him.

Very inspirational story thanks for sharing . Here's to continuing to wish your family good things on all fronts . An MU win will be more frosting on the cake.
Chick and glow
Great story!!! Happy to hear four years and counting. Thanks for sharing both stories, they made my day.
