Title: Strength Program
Post by: MUMountin on March 15, 2017, 09:58:57 AM
Nice article about the MU Strength program--it certainly has seemed to help having consistency in this area over the years.

I'm really intrigued to see what guys like Sacar and Harry are like next year after a year of conditioning, as well as how our freshman (Sam especially) develop during the off-season.

Our strength and conditioning coaches are a great asset. They really know how to motivate the kids.

Yep, they do an amazing job.  Among others, Matt's strength increased pretty noticeably this season.

Did they have that "catapult system" when Buzz would do his boot camps? Those boot camps were brutal if I recall.

Marquette was pretty injury free baring Duane Wilson groin pull.  Knock on wood everyone stays healthy.

Far better. They represent everything that is great about MU.

You are very quickly becoming more insufferable than Ners.

I've read articles and countless comments about how great our strength coaches are. People, they aren't doing anything different than other major programs. In fact, one could make an argument that we are extremely weak on the boards and on defense the last 3 years. That has a lot to do with strength.

Who on Marquette's team would you list as having above average strength for his position? JJJ and Duane are string beans and they've been at Marquette 4 years.

So what is going on that everyone but you is mistaken about our strength coaches?

Having a couple of genetically slender guys on our team means our conditioning program stinks?

JJJ gained 20 pounds of muscle of a base of literally nothing and Duane is taught like an NFL cornerback.

They did a great job with Sam and had only the summer to work with him. That kid had enough increased size and  strength to compete at the 4 .  Matt has had an incredible transformation. A year with Rowsey built him up and Markus was like the pillsbury doughboy before he came here etc. Luke has been in surgery every off season and they were still able to make progress. Sacar had a good base and now he is a bull.

The point is they take the raw material and make the best they can out of it. That is the magic of a good strength and conditioning coach.

Look at some of the other teams at the school that have had success, such as the women , lacrosse and track and you will see their handiwork.

So THAT was the way we got to the NCAAs! Our S&C coaches managed to counteract the de-motivating powers of Wojo. I knew it had to be something like that!

I would say the key remotivator was Stan.

Stan would be getting head coaching job offers, if there was any indication he could coach. Let me know when he starts getting offers, otherwise stop the non sense about how Stan should be MU's head coach.

He relates to the youth of today much better. He understands their foibles and works to improve them in a positive and healthy way. They believe Stan has their back and they trust he has their best interests at heart.

So the entire team does not believe Wojo has their back and also believes he doesn't have their best interests at heart?

All assistants require a leap of faith. Who knew Izzo was going to be any good?

Indeed. And who knew Wojo would be the worst coach in the history of college basketball - a classic de-motivator whose team improved each year and reached the NCAA in Year 3 only because of the contributions of the strength coach and an assistant coach?

Then why aren't there any photos of players hugging Stan after wins?

Of all people ,your not giving enough credit to the fourth estate on the various MU boards keeping the pressure up to perform.

Because if photographers did that, the photo editor would be yelling that they didn't get the shot of the Head Coach.
