Title: Big East Tournament Thread
Post by: BM1090 on March 08, 2017, 02:06:19 PM
I thought we might as well have a thread for all BET games, with it kicking off tonight.

It looks like they removed the NBA three point line from the court for the tournament, which was something that I was irrationally worried about

No, you're right...we are a 3 team and don't need that distraction. Glad they are getting rid of it.

(We also don't want Marcus to get the itch after he hits his 4th 3 from beyond the other arc :) )

Thankfully we're still another full season away from him being eligible to do something about that itch.

Would like to see The Johnnies beat down the The Hoyas. Mullin is building a program with a future and JT3 is like an anchor in the sand for Georgetown. Also having the hometown team in the next round boost the excitement  level for the tournament.

We need Gtown to win to avoid falling below 100 in RPI.

What are the outcomes?

If Georgetown loses, they fall below the top-100. That means another sub-100 loss and one less top-100 win. For SJU to reach the top-100, they have to win the entire tournament, so it's highly unlikely they could win enough to offset the damage of the GT loss.

I agree with your disdain of JT3 and Georgetown. I also am intrigued by Mullin and St. John's. But Georgetown winning would be much better for Marquette.

It's not.  We split with both teams and whether one of those teams ends up just inside or just outside a particular arbitrary grouping in one isolated metric will not materially impact our overall profile.  Personally I'm just glad we should be safely in the field and have a great opportunity against a very solid Seton Hall team.

Archie Miller would be a home run, but unlikely he takes that over his alma mater of NC State. Will Wade, Kevin Keatts, and LeVelle Moton likely get mentioned.

In the short term, I think Crean would be a good fit, but think he'd get their fanbase frustrated after a few years as they might have IU like expectations. Lavin I can't see. Good enough recruiter, but marginal on court results, and haven't they had enough of that?

One name that might pop up this year is Mick Cronin. He's been complaining a lot about seeding and AAC treatment. Might be pull a Buzz and seek greener pastures despite success? They are close, and right now the Big East looks pretty stable.

In thinking about this, I think the only thing that could make this work is if they hire a alum.

Someone like Patrick Ewing, who has been an NBA assistant for over a decade.

That could be really the only option if JT III is forced out. But, would an alum go directly against the wishes of Big John?

The one advantage would be the opportunity to rally the basketball alumni to their side.

Still a potential mess.

The thought is that someone like Ewing would be amenable to the Thompson family.  His son is on staff already as the Director of Basketball Operations.

Thought there was a lot of contact by SJU on GU drives that wasn't called.  With 3-4 minutes left there was a flagrant 2 by SJU, when the GU guy at the line kept rubbing his eyes that wasn't even reviewed by the refs rubbing his eyes.

What is the rule on that, can a coach ask for a review or is it totally up to the refs.

Let's hope. Now that Marquette took care of it's business by getting back to the tournament this year, I'd love to see Georgetown get their *hit together and get back to being one of the top brands in the Big East.

Doubt it would ever happen since he's building a nice thing in Blacksburg, and will likely hold out for 1 last "big time" job - but it would be fun to see Buzz get the job.

Georgetown still has far more national appeal. JT3 was still able to land solid recruits despite running the awful Princeton offense, and having zero charisma.

Would love to build a real rivalry, and play him twice a year. And it would nice to get another big name coach in the conference.

Don't see it as being a fit, outside of the fact that Georgetown-Blacksburg are only about 4 hours apart.  But it would be fun to see.

The Big East is doing great things, but we can only benefit from having Georgetown (and St Johns) being relevant again..

Based on where they are at right now.. What type of coach do you think would accept the Georgetown job?

I know they've had poor postseasons recently, but 2 years ago Georgetown took 2nd in the BE and was a 4 seed. 4 years ago they were co-champions and a 2 seed. 5 years ago they finished the season ranked 15th by the AP.

Forget the poor postseasons, and they're doing ok.

I'll forget the poor postseasons, and I still don't think they are doing "ok". Because they've missed the tournament 3 of the last 4 years. That alone should be cause for concern. Marquette missed 3 straight years, but we had a coaching change/rebuild.

Add in the postseason? They've won 3 tournament games in a decade. Zero Sweet 16's.

Time for a change.

Doubt it would ever happen since he's building a nice thing in Blacksburg, and will likely hold out for 1 last "big time" job - but it would be fun to see Buzz get the job.

1 last big time job? Buzz is supppppper young for a coach. What?

Was flipping between STJ/GT, VT/Wake, and OSU/Rut as they were all close down the stretch at the same time. What was most apparent was the difference among crowds. I get that we had a local team and a big name, but wow was the MSG crowd looking and sounding miles better than the other two.

Washington DC isn't  B1G city despite the addition of Maryland. NYC is not an ACC city....especially since Syracuse lost early. Super conferences lose some of their roots. We haven't.

I heard last night on the broadcast that '16-17 was the worst GTown season since something like 1974.  Can that really be true?  If so, clean out GTIII's office this morning.  And tell the old man that if he doesn't like it he can leave too.

If anything the BET games so far have showed is that Marquette better be prepared for a dogfight today with The Hall.  Sure we can shoot threes but we need to be physical because otherwise the Pirates are going to push us around.

Luke and JJJ need to play with maximum intensity.

Agree. Delgado is a beast under the birds. Fischer needs to play with energy and more Matt to muscle around for position

I wonder if having Froling in practice will help.   If Wojo just told him to go to the boards with reckless abandon and that no foul would be called on him, I have to think that would help Matt and Luke.

I used to say that Jimmy Mac should do that for Wojo, but after seeing him in the alumni game with his bionic kneebraces, I changed my mind.

Nova is so far ahead of St. John's. I'd be surprised if they don't win it all again this year.

Side note. I like lavin, but he needs to work on being less St. John biased.  Although I do understand why he is

This happens every year. An 8 seed that played 12 hours ago has ZERO chance.  Mullin is cool. Nothing they can do today. Play with dignity.  Respect the tournament.

I think it tougher for the "western" schools to win the BET. It's practically a home court for the east coast schools. Since 2005 when we joined only Louisville won the BET (3X). West Virginia and Pitt are still pretty close to NYC as the other only non East Coast Teams to win.

Lavin says Cooley great at building confidence and building a team . Yet still can be organized and disciplined.

Cooley wants tough players no soft guys .

Wojo should take some notes out of the Cooley playbook. Which was essentially the old Buzz playbook which made us great.

Ed was just getting his footing at Providence during the days of JJJ recruitment. I think you are correct he would have been a better coach for JJJ. None the less we were able to enjoy a 4 year roller coaster with JJJ that kept things exciting.
