Title: How Good Is MU's (non-Men's Basketball) Sports?
Post by: Tugg Speedman on March 08, 2017, 09:44:35 AM
Now that the women's Bball won the BET.  This got me thinking about MU's non-Men's basketball sports.

Off the top of my head ... the track team won both Men's and Womens BET.  Wally All-American.  The soccer team reaching a ranking of #2 a few years ago.  The success of the lacrosse team and on and on.

I'm sure a lot of you are closer to the other sports than I am and can list more.  Please do.

Question, how would you characterize the recent success of MU's non-Men's basketball sports programs?  Seems to me they are collectively having a great run.  Agree?

I believe in 2013 Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer & Volleyball were all Big East Champions.  In 2015 MU Golf won the Big East Championship

Given all of the above - would you agree that MU (non-Men's basketball) sports is experiencing one of its best periods?  Or, what period, before the last 5 years, has been better?

Not sure, since I started in 2011-12 it's been excellent. I remember in particular the Big East volleyball championship game at the AL against Louisville with an incredible atmosphere.

Same with the women's soccer team when they were absolutely dominating my first two years. Maybe I got lucky but I haven't known any different.

I'd agree. During my MU attendance (early to mid 2000s) all sports besides men's basketball were pretty bad.  I don't think any made the NCAA-level tournament any of the years I was there. Women's soccer was just starting to get good, but that was about it.

I think being part of the Big East has brought up the caliber of the non Basketball sports.  We are getting some very nice student athletes across the board.  Success in these sports actually accrues to the benefit of basketball recruiting. These student athletes come from all over the country and when  kids see that other quality kids are going to MU it has a cumulative effect.  It is like having 300 quality sales reps in the field.

Soccer #2 ranking?

Umm never either mens or womens.
Infact the mens team is pretty bad right now.  Bennett seemed to be on the verge of doing something special ala his days at UWM but the program has slid since then.  May be approaching hot seat, recruiting remains solid but results not so much

Over the years, the Marquette men's and women's cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams (considered six different sports at MU) have had tremendous success in addition to the recent track success, with several Olympians and many All-Americans, an NAIA national title for women's cross country, many many team conference championships in all six of the sports for both the Great Midwest Conference and C-USA as well as dozens of individual champions.

But since you specifically mentioned early to mid-2000's here goes:  The women's cross country team qualified for the NCAA nationals (only 31 teams make it) for 6 straight years from 2000-05, and won the C-USA every year from 2000-04 (winning 7 of 10 titles in the 10 years they were in C-USA, finishing 2nd the other three years).  The men's cross country team was C-USA champions in 2003.  Every year each of the six sports finished high up in each of the C-USA conference championships.  In 2003 and 2005 Brianna Dahm was an All-American in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the outdoor nationals and in 2006 Michaela Courtney was an All-American in the 1500 meters at the outdoor nationals.

I get that cross country and track are not high profile sports, especially with very few home meets, but to not have any idea of the success that these teams were having is surprising.

This is on Bennett's bio, but don't know that much about soccer rankings or what is considered the official rankings-------

Under Bennett's direction, Marquette climbed as high as No. 2 (Soccer America) -- the highest ranking in program history -- in the national polls after the squad reeled off 12 consecutive victories to open the 2012 campaign, including a thrilling 3-2 win over then No. 2-ranked Connecticut at Valley Fields on Oct. 6.

The women won their second straight indoor track & field title a couple weeks back:

And as mentioned earlier, both the men and women won the outdoor title last spring.

I sincerely stand corrected. I never heard anything about that while at MU. Not sure if that is an idictment of me or the university or both. To be honest, I didn't even know MU had cross country. I knew we had track.

You have obviously never been to campus in the Fall and seen tall skinny women in shorts with ice bags taped to their thighs and shoved down into their Uggs around their ankles.

It is probably not an indictment of anything except that track at the collegiate level is not an overly fan friendly sport and cross country even less so.  There are no home cross country meets (except an occasional hosting of the conference championships at a park far off campus), no home indoor track meets and only one or two outdoor meets in usually less than ideal conditions.  The only way to really know back then of the success of the team was by reading the school newspaper (not sure they even have a paper copy anymore) or knowing someone on the team, and with close to 100 men's and women's cross country and track & field athletes, there is usually a pretty good chance a student might know someone.  Nowadays it is definitely easier to know of the success of the team than it was back in the early 2000's when you were a student, simply because of social media.  I am pleasantly surprised at how many people are aware of the track teams success at the Big East indoor and outdoor championships the past couple of years and I think face book and twitter are the main reason.
