The guy we almost got, and many wanted ... Shaka
Last year Texas was 20-13 and in the Tourney.
Pre-season Texas was #21. They were ranked the first three weeks of the season.
After today's loss Texas is 10-20 (4-13) and a complete dumpster fire.
Sometimes it about the move you did not make.

Done deal?
Cmon--you gotta give MU82 props on this. No one has been discussing 'the one that got away' more than 82. He was first--give him his props.
I don't blame most (if not all) Scoopers for having preferred Shaka over Wojo 3 years ago.
What's sad is that a large percentage of Scoopers probably still think Shaka would be better - even though Wojo has gradually built a tourney team from garbage while Shaka has turned a perennial tourney program into garbage.

I don't think you can say definitively one way or another...

Texas has no point guard. Been there, done that.
This thread is ridiculous.
Apples to Oranges. One coach is in year two, one coach is in year three, very different environments. You cannot say this coach did bad there so he would have been bad for MU, or this coach did well there, so he would have been good for MU.
It took Jay Wright 4 years to make the NCAA's at Villanova, same for Mike Krzyzewski at Duke. They turned out ok.
Smart may or may not do well at UT, we'll see in a few years down the road. Year two? Wow, tough crowd.
I would have evaluated Wojo after 4 years no NCAA's.

Even so, this board would have been going apesh!t if Wojo turned in a 10-20 record last year, especially after being ranked in the preseason.
I am not definitively saying anything except the facts as we know them.
1. It took Wojo only 3 years to get us to the NCAAs.
2. Shaka is 10-20 at Texas in Year 2.
3. Scoopers would have gone berserk had Wojo gone 10-20 at MU, regardless of circumstance. Hell, many think he "sucks" now, despute significant evidence to the contrary.
Richard Pitino's Minnesota team won the NIT in its first year. Went downhill after that until last year the team only won 8 games. He's dancing this year. Shaka still has time.

I wouldn't be surprised if Shaka turns things around big-time at Texas. He has been a good coach.
I know some Scoopers get sick of the comparisons, but ...
Shaka was almost our coach, and many who mourn our "loss" have repeatedly opined that we would never succeed under Wojo.
MU82
I am confused on who thinks Wojo sucks. Yes, there a couple of folks who are out there, but it has not been even a decent sized minority.
I think Wojo is exactly what I thought he was two months ago. He is a work in progress and even if we tanked he was not going anywhere.
I am very happy for the entire program and think it has been a nice few days. That said, I am not signing a petition to rename the John Wooden NPY trophy after wojo just yet.

Just change sucks to "think Wojo will never win at a high level". That's what 82 is saying.
Crean sucks
We r prolly dancin n
Crean is prolly fired

Shaka took UT to the NCAAs in year one (20-13). His point guard was expected to return and instead went pro. In his system, lacking a good PG is huge. Its not as bad as the record shows. But yes there are worries:.....
I live and work among the ocean of UT supporters.
Comparing MU BB to a UT program looks past some big differences. Apples to Oranges, ie burnt oranges. lol
Believe it or not the recent theme of many worried UTers is excess and entitlement. This is the richest athletic dept in the USA. They note.... UT is the only major sport in the large city of Austin. Between the great facilities, and only game in town, UT athletes are pampered and entitled from day one on campus. Spend just a week in Austin and you'll get a feel for this aberrational phenomena. Stars of UT major sports are treated like pro stars in other cities.
Strong tried to to clean up a lot of that and make kids responsible to themselves and the program. He progressed, but didnt win enough to stay. Tom Hermann is amping it higher but has already told 5-6 schollies that if they didnt return its fine with him as some are not buying into his very tough love nobody is secure coaching style.
Shaka was going from VCU to UT...a very different job. UTers suspected his methods too may not translate here. Key players have been suspended and one left.
The jury is out whether UT can ever have a Hermann/Shaka style coach succeed in pampered Austin.
Shaka didnt forget how to coach, and he can succeed elsewhere...UT wasnt a great fit for his style/methods going in yet...
coming in behind Buzz's methods/mentality...the MU program was a better fit for Shaka ...who knows how it would have played out but for sure Shaka wouldnt have faced some of the unique hurdles he has in Austin.
Shaka coaches at Texas.
I could care less what Texas does. Hence, I don't care what Shaka does. He is not our coach.
I wonder how Mrs. Smart likes it down there.

I applaud this sentiment.
Of course, I am exempt for obvious reasons ;D. I didn't care about Shaka after he spurned us. But he truly became dead to me the second he donned burnt orange and headed to TU

So you do care what Texas does, at least a little bit, ai'na?
Has almost all freshmen. Made the Dance with Barnes' talent. Will have Texas back in a year or two. Silly comparison.
Texas will be in the Sweet 16 within 3 years.....
Smart just needs a couple of his recruiting classes......
And he gets Texas to pick from......
I would be very surprised is he doesn't kick A$$ within the above time period.....

So it was obvious that everyone had it wrong to have them ranked at the beginning of the season?
The issue is not the 10-20 record, Crean Buzz and Wojo did that. The difference is they were expected to have those types of seasons. Shaka was not.

Michigan State, Indiana and UCONN were rated higher too. Preseason polls are biased and are a little over half correct. In other words, they are crap. Scoopers are more informed.

Yeah it is way too early to right him off.
I do think he is a tad overrated but hardly a poor coach.
Shaka had a proven track record of success prior going to UT. Comparing apples and oranges in talking Wojo and Shaka. Expectations higher with Shaka but the rope should be longer for him.

Exactly. Moreover, I have rarely seen a bunch of 'wash women' (some of you guys) argue more about who gets their husband's shirts cleaner over the backyard fence.
Brothers, MARQUETTE is going to the NCAA for the first time since 2013! Who the hell cares if you were right or wrong in some thread 4 months ago or 4 years ago for that matter?
Great post JS, like it or not we are Team Wojo. Hop on the train!!
We got a berth guys, you should be happy, why aren't you??

Agreed. I am not sure who is arguing anything about the two. I could not care less what Shaka does at any job he has in the country. For whatever reason folks love having threads about the coaches who have left and ones that got away.
This is Wojo's team and success or failure is completely on his shoulders. It was a very nice finish over the past five games and hats off to all involved.
IMO, all I cared about over last five games was seeing some grit and they showed it. NCAA is a bonus to me and gladly take it.

Way, way too many Scoopers are focused on woulda, coulda, shoulda. It's a sad way to live your life.

The grit and confidence they gained in three weeks is impressive. It seems they all bought into the final push and that was not a sure thing after GT mess.

plus 4 top 100's coming in next Fall. Including a highly rated PG out of Oak Hill Academy.

To clarify, as negative a stance as you have generally taken on wojo and the direction/state of the program this season, you would have been okay without making the NCAA's? Really?

Wow, way to just gloss over the Big East there, IU writer. F*ck IU, F*ck the Big 10, F*ck Mobb Deep, f*ck Biggie, f*ck Bad Bay records as a staff, a record label, and as a motherf*ckin crew.

Try and read all my posts before generalizing my overall opinion of the program. Stated two weeks ago that the NCAA means little to me this season. Happy they are in and believe they earned it.
My take on Wojo has not or is not negative. I would give him a C+ thus far and inflated with ability to land HE and Howard.
