Title: If MU wins today..and gets a little help
Post by: muguru on March 04, 2017, 07:58:24 AM
If MU wins today, and gets a little help today from Georgia(beating Arkansas), that would give MU 8 top 50 wins. You know how many schools have 8 or more top 50 wins??

Villanova-10
Duke-10
Baylor-9
North Carolina-9
Butler-9
Florida St-9

That's it..those 6. I'd say that's keeping pretty good company.

Now keep in mind, these #'s are before today's games, so things could change some with these win totals, or other teams getting up to 8, but it won't be many regardless.

Guru,

How does MU rank on the other end, bad losses?  What are they and how much do they hurt?

St johns is it n they are not really a bad loss.  They lost some early precon games that they would never lose now but still hurts there number

And St. John's RPI is 131 while KenPom has them 86

So we have 6 top 50 wins (could be as much as 8 tonight) and either zero (kenpom) or one (RPI) worse than 100 losses.

That is correct..If MU ends up with 8 top 50 wins(will have 7 regardless with a win), it will be interesting to see where the committee seeds them.

Wasn't it less than a week ago you said Marquette didn't deserve a bid? Wasn't worthy of a bid? Attendance would drop off a cliff next year (extremely strange claim), your continued bashing of the current coach and former administrators?

We need today's game, I do not believe we are in, but what changed for you in the last few days?

Well..put it this way..with all the blown double digit leads this year and the PC loss at home..a realist knows a bid should have been sewn up a long time ago. Hate sitting on the brink like this..they need to finish today and remove all doubt.

I fully expect The Hall to lose today to Butler which would kick them out of the top 50 RPI. How the committee seeds this team is going to be interesting.

Lets say for arguments sake that they finish with 7 top 50 wins. Thats top 10 in country in terms of top 50 rpi wins. Do they get a bump because of it?

In all honesty and some may laugh but if marquette doesn't blow double digit leads against Pitt, @ Butler, @ Providence, the meltdown in the final minute at Seton Hall this team is probably in contention for a top 4 seed. Regardless this is a scary team to play in the NCAA tournament. Because although there record says they lost those double digit lead games it doesn't tell you the story about this team.  If we do get to the 8/9 seed line. We cannot play Nova because of rules impacting conference play until the s16.

If im Marquette and we end up on the 8/9 line I want Gonzaga.

We hate RPI. It understated us all year for our individual ranking. So naturally, it would understate OTHER teams when they're talking about Top 50 wins...

I understand you're strictly talking about RPI, which the committee supposedly still uses as a measuring tool, so you're right. But if we're looking at Kenpom..

We are 1-4 vs the top 25 in Kenpom.
We are 4-1 vs the 26-50 in Kenpom.
(Only 2-5 vs. the Top 40, FWIW).

5 top 50 wins, 5 top 50 losses.

Plenty of other teams who have more than that many.

But your point is taken. If the committee looks at our RPI and scoffs - they can look at our Top 50 wins and easily be impressed. The resume is there.

Let's get a win today, and leave no doubt for the committee.

Young teams (young at key positions and lack of senior leadership) will result in late losses and some great wins.  That pattern has been around sports since they began.  Kids have to learn how to win.  Look at the production from the freshmen and sophomores, plus first time MU player in Rowsey.  Couple that with seniors that sometimes play like seniors and sometimes don't, and we get up and down results.

Someone said here that seniors always get better and should play better, must be on the coach.  May have Deane's Glasses.  Dominic James was not a better player his senior year than his earlier years.  Nigel Hayes? No.  Jamil Wilson?  Debatable.  Some kids don't take that final step, or can't handle the leadership responsibility.

Which is why next year looks so good ... one more year of seasoning and a more confident team does not lose these types of games.

guru, I'm tempted to rip you a new one because you let the hate fly after pretty much every loss. It isn't just frustration with you, either. You totally tear down the coach and the players at every bad bounce.

But the more I think about it, it's nice that you are capable of jumping back on the bandwagon. Unlike some Scoopers, who seem to be actively rooting for failure so they can beyotch about Wojo and who hide when the team does well.

In some ways, I feel sorry for those who are so joyless that they can't get behind a fun, entertaining group that obviously has MU hoops on the upswing.

Speaking of help, it doesn't look like we're getting any from St. John's.

Well said my very good friend ... I'm even tempted to buy some Apple!

I was doing the math on t50 wins last night and was a bit surprised to see the team directly ahead of MU is Duke.

Stay out of the catbox in the BET 1/4s, and MU is already in.
