Hey everyone. Tonight was truly a special game for me and my family. My mom passed away on Sunday night - gone way too soon. While she hated sports (even though I work in sports), she always loved Marquette for the experiences I had there and for the close friends I made while there. I'll never forget the 30 extra minutes I had as a freshmen unable to leave the car outside Abbottsford because my mom didn't want to let me go haha. Whenever Marquette was on, whether as a student or a graduate, she watched because of me.
Tonight being the very first game since her passing was especially tough. However, I couldn't help but think that she provided some divine intervention in the game tonight. There were certain plays that just seemed to bounce our way, unexplained and unexpectedly, and I truly believe my Mom was the biggest fan in the stands in heaven for all of us tonight.
Basketball is so much bigger than just basketball, but it allows us all to heal in our own particular ways. Tonight was incredibly special (I got to watch it with my Dad too), and I felt like I needed to share this with all of you because we are all so passionate about Marquette and the basketball program. Tonight was emotional on so many levels, but I will always treasure tonight's game as it being the first moment of my mom in heaven telling me that she is looking out for me and my family.
P.S. sorry for the emotional post. Be sure to tell your parents you love them as often as you can. You never know when the last time may be.
Go Marquette!
Golden,
Very sorry for your loss in my prayers big time. Your post and love of your parents makes my day more than this win. You are a good man!!!
GW, thanks for sharing. God does work in amazing ways. I'm sure your Mom was watching right along with you and your dad.
My condolences to your family, and my prayers are with you.
Sorry for your loss. I'm sure she was still watching though :)
Condolences to you and your family GW. It's amazing how something as seemingly insignificant as a basketball game can remind you that she's still there, just cheering from God's good seats.
Golden, my Mom's last night on earth was spent at a MU game. Which they won. I am sure our Mom's were cheering together tonight and my Dad and Al were swearing until the last few minutes:)
Sorry for your loss. Prayers up. Glad we all got a gift from above tonight.
Very sorry for your loss, GW. Know that your mom is up there smiling as she watches down on you.
Sorry for your loss. Thanks to your mom for helping bring it home.
Thanks to MomGW for keeping the lid on the bucket in the final 4 seconds!

I saw 80 of the 81 game home winning streak in person with my Mom and Dad. They were not sports fans to the core, but they loved MU ball and they gave me the privelege to be an MU fan and grad.
I missed the game tonight because I was at McGuire with my three sons and do not regret missing game a bit. I was there with my adult boys and my parents in spirit.
I'm sure she had a seat right next to Al tonight.
Replying through misty eyes. Very sorry for your loss.

I am with you. I am an unashamed softie, but Golden's post is the post of the night. Family is the greatest gift any of us are ever given and I hope everyone appreciates it. I know GW and most on here do and that is better than any basketball win, IMO.
Sorry to hear about your mom.
Thanks for all of the support and prayers, everyone. My family and I truly appreciate it. It feels great to share this with all of you. I will absolutely cherish tonight for more than just the win. Hopefully, it's the first many more signs from above from my Mom!
Golden, don't ever feel the need to apologize for telling us how you feel, and sharing an amazing story.
I will be sending prayers to you and your family, and thank you Mrs. Golden for the help tonight!
We are ALL Marquette

+1
I'm so sorry for your loss Golden. My prayers for peace, comfort and love in a very difficult time. God bless
So sorry for your loss. Lots of former alums and season ticket holders watching from the skybox last night.
Sorry for the loss of your Mom Golden. I lost mine 20 years ago last Saturday. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Really sorry to hear that. Prayers for you and your family.
Golden,
I grew up in S Bend. Mom was an ND fan till I gave ND the finger and went to MU. She always watched and rooted for MU. Even against ND. I'll go out on a limb that they might have been watching together last night.
Condolences.
