Title: Six-point dogs vs. Nova....
Post by: ecompt on January 23, 2017, 05:56:36 PM
the same line as at Creighton, and we all know what happened there. So there is hope. We just have to shoot lights out and play a solid defensive game.

I called the Creighton line a 'suckers bet' so clearly I don't know jack, but here are my (non Tower approved) SUPER NOVA thoughts:
- That big guy on the left knows he needs the same game he had in Omaha and comes close
- Katin is going to have a very mediocre game because Nova will game plan for him to be the difference maker
- because of the above JjJ puts up 28 and keeps us in the game late into the 2nd
- Howard has a decent game but he's been scouted and everyone is frustrated with his lack of production
- Cheatham's drives to the rim create multiple fouls and opportunities
- 3pt and transition defense are less than desirable

Hauser kills a 3 off of a Cheatham drive/dish with 4secs left. MU 91 - VU 90.  JjJ = SOTG

Nova 85 MU 72.  Jenkins SOTG.

Jenkins has been shooting the ball poorly of late, get up on him, plays a little like Sam, not a great driver.  Last time MU played Villy they hit every three, played the
best I have seen them play this year.  They definitely are beatable but MU will have to shoot lights out again plus they will not run up and down like Creighton, so
have to take the best shot possible and turn it over, ie. JJJ.

I'd check that.

He had one brutal game against St. John's where he went 1-10 including 1-7 from three. But outside of that....

vs. Marquette: 23 points, 7-11 FG, 6-9 3P
vs. Xavier: 20 points, 5-10 FG, 4-8 3P
vs. Seton Hall: 16 points, 4-8 FG, 4-6 3P
Vs. Providence: 19 points, 7-12 FG, 3-6 3P

Umm... he's shot 64.7% eFG% over his last 5 games.

Nova shot out of its mind in the first game: 65% overall, including 61% from behind the arc.

Their season stats are 50% overall and 39% from 3.

Even if we acknowledge that MU plays bad defense, and add in a 10% "premium" for that, it should be no higher than 55% and 43% this time around. And given that our fans will make it a hostile environment, the kind that occasionally affects even great teams, I think we can make a run at 'em.

At least that's what this optimist is saying!

Ha I've given up even hoping for that. We are what we are, and we seem to have embraced it. There's a better chance we shoot 70% from 2, 50% from 3, while they just shoot only slightly above their season averages against a mediocre non-con team. That's what I'm hoping for.

edit:  the yearly average combined PPG is 163.2

I thought 12 points seemed reasonable for the game in Philly and it ended up being 12.

Six points sounds about right this time, too.

I'm just hoping we can not just cover but celebrate when it's over!

In other news. I am leaving work early if we win. No one should have to deal with drunk people all night in an ER when I can deal with drunk MU fans at a pub.

Good omen for tonight...my wife bought me tickets for McGuire tonight (of all nights) and the boys and I will be there over the game. I am taking one for the team because it always seems like the good stuff happens when I cannot make it. Thought about skipping McGuire, but will send all the Al energy to you folks at the game.

Have fun and bring home a W!!!!!!!!

Nova has an efficient offense but they play at an incredibly slow pace. That's why the o/u is low. In Philly, we forced them to play our style of game but they shot the lights out. I would expect a lower scoring affair tonight if Nova wins.

Post by: tower912 on January 24, 2017, 01:33:36 PM
I think Nova wants to control pace because they are playing a 7 man rotation.    IMO, the way for MU to win is to push tempo and attack the basket, hopefully getting some home cooking on calls, and then, with Nova on their heels due to a little foul trouble, keep driving and working inside out for the open 3's.    Then make it rain.      I'll call it now.   MU 90-78.

Are you counting the games you don't attend even when free tickets have been offered?

Golden

There have not been a great deal of "moments" in recent history, regardless of my attending on free or paid tickets. This game happens to be an event, not often (#1 is in the house) and I gladly, and probably would have, paid more for tickets that 99.9% of the fans tonight. This is a game I normally would have very, very good seats and not care about cost.

For the record, my free tickets for DePaul ended up costing me over $100 and wish I had stayed home from that game as well.

If we have a 6 point lead in the final minute and are sent to the line, seems reasonable.

If we have a 6 point lead in the last minute, that probably means we had a 20 point lead with 5 minutes left.

Pomeroy has us at 33% to win.

My guess for the other 67%...

33%: Nova keeps us at an arm's length in the 2nd half, not getting any closer than 2 or 3 possessions.

34%: We get trucked.

This was an easy call.  As was Nova at minus whatever you could get them at.  When you outclass a team at every position, 4.5 to 6 point spreads are easy money.

You may eventually be right, but with less than half the game complete, the "told you so" call is a lot premature.

I should've started it with 20 minutes left on the clock.  This ain't Jay Wright's first rodeo.  If we thought he would take a look at the 102 we hung at Creighton and thought we'd just light up the scoreboard then we forgot who we were playing and who coaches them.

Down 15 with Hart not playing and Jenkins having 2 points (thanks to a foul with him rolling around on the ground with the ball and 2 tenths of a second left in the half)...
