Title: Best Offense Ever?
Post by: The Lens on January 23, 2017, 02:14:37 PM
Our Offensive Efficiency both adjusted and raw are off the charts good.  And better than any team since KenPom has been tracking (2002).  But going beyond that, is the the best in MU's history?  I've followed MU passionately since 1990.  Maybe the 1996 team could be in the discussion.   From what I understand about Al's style of play it seems defense was much more important.

So is this the best offense in the history of MU hoops?

Since I have been watching Marquette (1985) I say it is the 3rd best offensive team.  The 2002-3 Final Four was clearly better and, right now,  the Amigos last hurrah (2008-9) was slightly better.  Especially with James healthy that team was better offensively than this year.

Though third best in the last 30+ years of Marquette basketball is quite something as there have been some real good teams in that stretch.

Let me be more clear...

Best offense can be subjective.  What I meant to ask was would any team pre-2002 have better Offensive Efficiency rating (adjusted or raw) than this year's squad?

I see. I think comparing efficiency across that many years isn't that valuable in my mind other than the ranking (1st, 2nd) within that year but calculating the raw number would be simple enough with season stats.

The final 4 team was the top offensive efficiency team in the country that year but wasn't as efficient as this years team in raw numbers.

Rule changes make comparing teams from different years difficult. 3 point line has been moved slightly back making this years shooting even more impressive but the freedom of movement defensive restrictions help out offenses a lot.

UCLA has an adjusted offensive efficiency of 125......our final 4 team was 116 by comparison. Last year NC lead at 123....2 years ago UW was 127!

One thing that might be valuable across years is do what baseball does... Calculate that year's average and each team's +/- from that number.  And that number is percentage based as well.

Or phrased (yet) another way, pre 2002, did we ever have a Top 10 offense?

The '78 team was very effective.  Of course it was before the 3pt line, but the TEAM shot 51.7% from the floor.
The only one of the top 6 players that shot less than 50% was Ulice Payne at 48.8%
