Title: Random Thoughts...
Post by: DonCornholeone on January 04, 2008, 01:05:32 AM
- Slightly disappointed at the turnout.  Guess it's to be expected with school out, the weather, etc.

- Trend played like a man possessed the last 3 minutes of the game.  He was like a mini-LeBron out there!

- Christopherson is strong, has a great handle and a sweet little crossover.  Add the fact that he can stroke it from deep, he is going to be a very good one.

- Great game by DJ.  5 out of his 6 3s were within the offense and he was on fire.  6 dimes, no turnovers!  Great to see 43.5% from 3 as a team.  Also, we saw the much-hyped trey stroke of Lazar.

- Wow, we are DEEP!  McNeal has the flu and Barro steps up with 14 and 9, Lazar with 17, Wes with 16.

- What is with the myriad of Weapons-of-Mass-TShirt-Distribution?  They had a crazy garbage can smart-bomb, a gatling gun...  and don't they sometimes float them down from the ceiling with parachutes attached?  I remember the days when the male cheerleaders would huck them into the crowd or they'd use wingers.  How far we've come...

Gross how can you drink that garbage. The only good thing about miller chill is the Miller Chill girls that go from bar to bar.

Does anybody think that the turnout was affected by the late starting time? I know that's why I decided not to go.

It looked like a pretty good turnout, especially for a break game. The later starting time was good for the student section- more time to get everything coordinated for the kids coming in from off-campus.

I liked that nobody played more than 28 minutes.   Ooze was due for a breakout game.   That looked like his peak from last year.   I hope DJ's ankle recovers.   It is a pleasure to know that if he is somehow gimped by it, we have lots of depth to make up for it.   We need to stop scheduling these cupcakes.   A win at WVU would be a HUGE statement.

Attendance was reported at 17,000+.  As usual, that number doesn't reflect the actual, which in my estimate was around 15K, maybe a bit less.  To me, that's still an impressive crowd for a break game on an icy Thursday night with a late start.

The crowd was mostly subdued, which a blowout will do...also, the flow of the game was disrupted every few seconds by a whistle.  What was it, something like 46 or 48 total fouls called?  So that quieted us down too.

I enjoyed every minute though.  Watching Ooze on a mission, and he was most definitely on a mission, was fun.  Trend too, when he got his chance late in the game.

The actual attendance was about 16,500 just by scanning the open areas upstairs and figuring a quick count of empty seats by section (sorry about my Murff-like accuracy :D).  Was a good crowd for a weeknite during the break.

Anyone know if Higgins was one of the ref's last night?  I really dislike him as a ref and I was hoping he had retired?  I know we won by a wide margin but I still thought the game was poorly officiated.

No sarcasm designations please. If you can't recognize it when it comes, you deserve any embarrassment you may suffer. Likewise, if the sarcasm you post is poorly delivered, and not recognized by most, you deserve any shame that may be brought upon you as well.

We must be using the same version of the Murff-meter, because I thought there was about 16,000+ in the house.

And props to the students, much larger turnout than I expected.

Higgins was doing the ND-WVU game last night.  Burr is the Higgins look a like.  WVU looked awful last night.  They were overmatched by what looked like a really good ND team.  Harongody was a beast dropping 29 points and 16 rebounds.  He'll be our toughest matchup next week without a doubt.

Most of the questionable calls/noncalls last night can be attributed to Burr. When he or Higgins is in the house, I pay much closer attention to which ref is potentially "at fault" when I see something differently than they do.

From my seat last night, I thought it was Higgins, not Burr, there.
On a related note, I apologize to Higgins for several things I may have said about him last night during the game. They still apply, just not last night. ;)

Not bitter and not obsessed. Just dumbfounded, astonished and flabbergasted that there are individuals like yourself who not only accept the fact that the university has ignored a huge majority of its constituents for a dozen years but who actually come to embrace what amounts to Marquette demanding that its fans grab their ankles every time they see the team nickname or logo in print.

Not that I am any more thrilled about the nickname change than you are but after reading your argument my first thought is "therein lies the rub".  You say "constituents" which is defined in the dictionary as basically a person who has a vote (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/constituents).  Marquette is NOT a democracy.  It is a private institution run by a board of which the membership is not determined by fans, alums, etc. as a whole.  They do not answer to students/parents/fans/alums/boosters/citizens/shareholders/etc.  There is ignoring going on by the board of trustees but they are completely entitled to do so - just as you are within your rights to ignore your neighbors if they protest the name you choose for a kid or pet.  The only influences that can really be exerted by those groups are money (which the board has also ignored - e.g. passing up on accepting donations with a warrior condition) and application rates/quality (which are not even close to being worrisome these days).

I do not like, and I certainly do not embrace, the nickname. I just think being angry/bitter/obsessed (sure you're not) over something so insigificant is a massive waste of time and energy. I mean, of all the things in the world deserving of one's outrage, a stupid college nickname shouldn't be high on anyone's list.
Hell, it's not even high on my list of expectations from my alma mater. I expect MU to provide a quality education. To maintain a solid academic reputation. To provide an attractive campus and facilities. To run clean and, hopefully, successful athletic programs.
A nickname? If they're doing all of the above, they can call themselves the Pretzels, for all I care. It just doesn't matter. Marquette is no better or worse because of what the university chooses to call its athletic teams.
You can make your own list of priorities, I suppose. But please do us a favor and act like those of us with a little different perspective - I'd suggest a little more perspective - are somehow kowtowing to the university.
Until then, keep on fighting the good fight against the tyranny of a nickname that you - gasp! - don't like.

I suppose if we were the Warriors instead of the Golden Eagles we would be a top 10 team in the nation...oh wait, that's right, we are exactly that right now...how does that work?!  I mean, our nickname is the GOLDEN EAGLES?!  The rest of the nation must SUCK if a team with the nickname "Golden Eagles" is in the top 10!!  We all know, Warriors sounds much "cooler," more intimidating, whatever you want to say than the Golden Eagles...I think a large majority of people will agree with you on that, so let's all cry.  We've heard it...OVER...AND OVER...AND OVER (and those go on for a while) and it does no good...you can start to keep it to yourself instead of bringing it up EVERY chance you get...it's getting old.  We are the Golden Eagles and we're a pretty darn good team.

And Coobey -- not that I need to explain myself to you, but I live in Chicago. An hour on a frigid night is a significant factor. Unless you drive almost 2 hours each way to watch the Warriors, I suggest to you that "pathetic" is not an appropriate description of my decision not to attend.

At least you admit we're a great team.  And that wasn't directed just at you...it's to everyone who continues to complain about it.  I agree, Warriors is MUCH better than Golden Eagles.  I'd even take Hilltoppers (maybe because i went to Marquette High for 3 years and we were the Hilltoppers?) over the Golden Eagles, but it's not going to change and our nickname does not change the team we put out on the court.  I'm satisfied having a lame nickname but a great team.  Much rather have it that way than a great nickname and a terrible team.

Imagine, a car in this day and age without heat!

And just out of curiosity, how much colder did you think it was going to get in that extra half hour?  I can just picture the logic. "Boy, because this game starts at 8:00, it's going to be 10 degrees when I leave the game--that's just too cold.  If only it started at 7:30--THEN  the temperature would be 11 and I'd be okay."

Fact is, a real warrior wouldn't let a little thing like the marginal drop in temperature by leaving 30 minutes later affect him that much.  And a Chicagoan complaining about cold temperatures in January is lame.

Wow.

This thread is refreshing.

PRN, I gotta respect your passion, but man I just think it's misplaced.

Also, I've asked the question before, but where are all of the Hiltopper alumni? Why aren't they "outraged" like the Warrior alumni?

Are they just too old to care and/or be heard from? (that's a serious question)

To be honest, I think most people will say that they would prefer Warriors but are really somewhat indifferent because the school has a ton of stuff going right... and the nickname just seems so small.

I mean, the nickname was Warriors back in 1990, but was the school better off back then? Wasn't that one of the highest crime and lowest enrollment years? (correct me if I'm wrong, I don't have the research right in front of me).

MU has relatively low crime, huge enrollment, great donations, better sports, better campus, etc. etc. Now, I'm not saying that's because of the nickname change... but I am saying it's hard for me to believe that the nickname is really hurting MU.

I know there have been some "Warrior stipulations" attached to donations that weren't accepted, but MU has still been able to find enough money to do most of the stuff they want.

While there was so many positives, I think the Ooze should receive the biggest improvement award.  His hands are like glue even with the Brett Favre passes he receives.  Then he has found away to become automatic around the hoop.  Kudos to Ooze.

Also, I've asked the question before, but where are all of the Hiltopper alumni? Why aren't they "outraged" like the Warrior alumni?

Are they just too old to care and/or be heard from? (that's a serious question)

Here's a serious answer.  MU hasn't been the "Hilltoppers" since 1954, so I'd venture a guess that, yes, there is no outrage since that alumni base is 74 plus years old, and "Warriors" became deeply ingrained into the MU identity for forty years.

We're a great team. No doubt about it. A great team, with a lame nickname!!

And Coobey -- not that I need to explain myself to you, but I live in Chicago. An hour on a frigid night is a significant factor. Unless you drive almost 2 hours each way to watch the Warriors, I suggest to you that "pathetic" is not an appropriate description of my decision not to attend.

See, I could see the driving excuse for Seton Hall on Tuesday. Though better then last year's team missing a game versus a bottom third Pirates team is somewhat understandable. You are not attending that one.

It was the Big East opener. For a man who spends 50% of his time bemoaning our schedule opponents I'm shocked that you wouldn't attend the Big East opener against a team like Providence that will fight for an NCAA berth. Also, it's a Thursday night during a holiday week. I'm fairly certain you could sneak up for the game and squeak out the missed hour on a friday in which little gets done across the country. Ah, maybe not.

I don't understand the frigid comment. You live in Illinois and attend basketball games in Wisconsin during the winter. More to the point, you must lose a lot of money on your MU tickets. I doubt you attend the buy games unless you have nothing else to do. 8 pm starts are too late for driving. 6 pm/6.30 starts have to be too early. That leaves, like, 6-8 games a season.

I don't mean to slam you but I lived in Chicago for some time and have been through this plenty of times.

I can't disagree... but I guess I just think the Warrior crowd pounds the drum pretty hard (no pun intended) about the "rightful name" being ripped away from them.

If Warrior fans have the right to be outraged, don't Hilltopper fans have the same and/or even great right to bitch about MU?

MU was the Hilltoppers LONG before it was ever the Warriors.

I don't like the way the university handled any of this stuff... but I have to say that people's sense of entitlement is a little curious.

There still are Hilltopper alums that want the name returned, never wanted Warriors to begin with, and has complained about it for 50+ years.  My parents are alums from that era that hated the Warriors name and nearly all of their alum friends did as well.  There were actually many that were happy when Warriors went away because they never wanted it to begin with.  But there are fewer and fewer of them around every year.  So the outrage that existed back in 1954 and carried on through the years just doesn't have enough people to spread the message.  Its too bad, because if you want to talk about MU forcing a nickname on it's alums/students/fans the change to Warriors may be a better example.

Also, as a side note as to why you don't see that kind of thing here or the other MU boards when the topic comes up, but how many 74+ year olds do you know that even know what a internet message board is, let alone post on one?  I can only recall a handful of people who were Hilltopper era alums that have ever posted, whether its here, or Scout, or even JS Online and the old Rivals board.

That's exactly what I'm getting at. I feel like some of the pro-Warrior group acts pretty righteous considering that the Warrior nickname was just as contrived at "Golden Eagles".

Again, I'm not saying I think Eagles should be the name, I'm just saying that the righteousness from the Warrior crowd is really misguided.

I understand people's passion for tradition, and I even understand that "Warriors" is a popular name... but realistically its not the  "right" or "real" name... that is "Hilltoppers".

I started MU in '56 and was surprised by the nickname change.  Didn't like the change as it appeared to be collateral damage from the invasion of the Boston Braves who have gone on to another hunting ground.  Golden Avalanche is my favorite of our past names. Voyageurs/Voyagers would be a relevant name.
