1. Creighton did not attack the rim as much as Butler did. Missed Watson. Feel bad for the kid. Seems like a class act. Foul trouble to Patton.
2. Continuing to score on offense offsets defensive breakdowns. Was it Brew who said that shooting would win some games?
3. Patton needs to go pro. I don't want to have to play him next year.
4. Luke was awfully good today. Accepted the challenge of the freshman phenom. Best conference game of the year for the big Fisch.
5. KR turned the momentum in the first half with his 10-0 run. Somebody different every game.
6. Lots of double digit scorers today. Love the balance.
7. Hanging 100+ on a top 10 team on the road. Gonna have to dig deep in the record books to find a precedent.
8. They finished. They kept attacking. They played enough defense. They took advantage of Watson's absence.
9. Still tried to be dumb at the end. Jesus H.
10. One less MU has to win at the end. Revel in it. Mmmmmmmmmm. Hot Damn
8. "enough defense" meaning giving up 1.38 ~ppp in the second half. Absolutely brutal.

Agreed. But MU kept hitting. It still has to get better, but today MU was able to shoot their way to victory.
One thing we still need to handle pressure better in bounding and bringing the ball up court. That said it's a great win for us.
HELL YEAH!
That is all.
Not so sure about #8. They did not score a field goal in the last 6 minutes and defense was soft. Great game but they have to learn how to lock down and bring intensity at the end.
That said great game. Great win. Onward.
MU gave up 54 points in second half, no field goal in last six minutes and still wins on the road.
Some knucklehead turnovers by Cheatham and JJJ, especially Cheatham who will get an earful from Wojo behind the doors. A very loud earful.
Fischer with 18, 8 bounds, 6 blocks, 3 assists, and had Patton in foul trouble. If he plays with that intensity/emotion, MU will be tough and probably would have won at Butler.
Marcus Foster is a stud......
Very nice that kids held a lead, even though last seven minutes were not good. Huge for their mental state next time.
Huuuuuuuge.
Horrible closing again. Fantastic win.
Glad I bet big on Creighton today. It was an auto win once I did that.
Anyone wanna loan me money for Tuesday?
In the first couple minutes you could tell someone had lit a fire under Luke's butt. Definitely showed that aggressiveness he had been lacking and it made a big difference. Some nice blocks too!
It will be interesting to see how Creighton does going forward. When the regular season is over they will still be ranked but not the juggernaut they have been. Quality win regardless.
I feel like dancing but gotta stay hungry and keep it going.

My unscientific gut feeling-- the difference was in the firsthalf, we kept Luke near the basket, the second half he got pulled out to the perimeter. Anyone remember MacIlvaine going out to the 3P line to switch on to a point guard?
Revere is the "we never win on national tv" guy????
The last 5-6 minutes started to look familiar, but the offense was just so good today that Creighton never could catch up. This was a huge win that shows these guys they're capable of playing well for 2 full halves (0ive or take). And finding guys, namely Katin, to step up when Markus has to sit is big too. All around, lots of great things happened today.
Defense is still an issue, and keeping focus with the lead needs to be emphasized. But all in all, really great game and a real team effort. This was a fun one to watch!

I love soft finesse basketball! At least for today. And as bad as I feel for the kid, I'm glad Watson didn't play. Creighton may have put up 110 with him.
Homer tdbits ...
First top 10 win since .... Providence last year which was also on the road
Also Creighton had won 108 consecutive home games when they scored 80 or more. That streak is over.

This is a message board ... if Kris Jenkins hit a 35 footer at the buzzer to win the National Championship for MU this board will still be full of bitching and moaning.
We gave up our highest point total of the season on defense today and WON. On the road. Creighton scored more than Butler, Wisconsin, Villanova, or Seton Hall (in overtime) managed to put up on us and we ran out winners.
There were quite a few people who talked about games that we would win that we probably should have lost because of our offense. Today was one of those. No matter how frustrated you might be with the defense, having an offense capable of putting up 102 on the road against a top-10 team is just insane. Two years ago we couldn't crack 90 on any court against any opponent.
That was a blast to watch. I feel bad for those that were nervous and lost fingernails today. Really enjoy watching this team put up points.

Truth. It's amazing to think how good this team would be IF they could play 40 mins of D. Unfortunately we're lucky to get 20 good mins. At times today in 1H, D was very good.
All that said - this win was monumental. Any doubt of us getting in at 10-8 is bow erased with that kind of road win.
Two years ago D Wilson was our #2 scoring option. Today he is, what, #8? And to be clear, I think Duane is playing very well, not a shot at him, just a comparison of the incredible remaking of the offense in two years.
I highly doubt we'll see a radical shift in defensive improvement this year. We just don't have the length on this roster. But man...with the way we can score, if we even had a top-50 defense we'd be a legitimate Final Four contender.
Also, really glad to see this one not get away. Had we just held the double-digit leads we had against Pitt, Seton Hall, and Butler, we'd be a top-15 team. It's starting to come together. Love teams that peak late, I feel like we're just starting to see what this team can become.
Fun game with two elite offenses and two crappy defenses. Huge win on the road jumps MU to 33 in Pomeroy.
Creighton can freakin' light it up on offense. Fastest team I can remember. I actually thought our D did a reasonable job. We play D that well against a normal team and we'll win a lot of games.

Agree. The desire to burn an extra 5-10 seconds of the clock is not worth having to initiate the offense with < 10 seconds on the shot clock and tossing up a hero ball prayer. Would like to see Wojo change this strategy.
I was delighted by the play of the team today. A very enjoyable game to watch.

Wholeheartedly agree. Keep attacking. Least we hit FTs.
If a team needs to be "coached-up" any coach would take Defense over Offense...so much of defense is "an attitude" and we need to STILL grow into that! Confidence in your teammates is the start...and I see this as a STRONG starting point! WE ARE!!! MARQUETTE!!! ENJOY the feeling with Nova around the corner!

Not very often that "holding the ball" and "contributed to the BJs coming" can be used in the same sentence without it being sexual.
Ok, let me put my flak jacket on before I type this...is it possible that the reason MU gave up so many points could possibly have been somewhat influenced by the remote possibility that Creighton is one of the best offensive teams in the country? Even though they were missing their brst player. DUCK AND COVER!!

Marquette wins a national championship because the other team made a 35 footer to the wrong basket at the buzzer... hell yeah I'd be bitching. Only natty I might see in my lifetime and it comes on the back of the other team's epic blunder? No thanks. I'd rather he miss the shot and take my chances in OT.
I understand wanting to take time off the clock, but a good shot is a good shot. Having people stand around 15 seconds and then rush a bad shot as the shot clock is expiring doesn't seem like a smart strategy. Marquette got away with it today.

Imagining a team winning on a mistake like that had me laughing way too hard. The butt fumble would cease to exist if that happened.
Agreed. One thing I thought they could do and didn't is, with no pressure, is to hold the ball for 4 seconds before passing it in. Conversely, JJ twice could have settled for a corner 3 and instead took it to the rim. So, some bad, some good.
We won, right??
Maurice Watson or not, that's still an excellent team we took apart on their home floor, in front of a packed house. Creighton still has a lot of talented players, and an excellent coach. Great job by Wojo, his staff, and players today. Lot of credit to all of them for bouncing back after a horrible defeat Monday. Really liked that Wojo obviously emphasized getting the ball to Luke down low early and often. Set the tone, and opened it up for all our perimeter guys.
Maybe what happened Monday afternoon they'll learn from, and can be used as fuel for the season's turning point. We'll see, long way to go, but I'm going to enjoy this one until the 'Nova tipoff.
Best win, I think far and away, since W over Miami in 2013 S16. Last year's Badger win was great too, but they were obviously a struggling team at that point still. Only win that compares is last year at Providence. But I think this one was more satisfying, especially coming off Monday's debacle. They showed a lot of character today in putting that one behind them.
Revel in it. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm. A glorious day for MU.

Why do big men at MU always get this stuff about not playing hard, intense, whatever? I don't think Luke needed any fire lit under him, his intensity is fine from game to game. What, because he doesn't go 18/8/6, every night, he's not intense? Crap on that. He's a good kid who does play hard. It wasn't his fault for 1 lousy FG attempt on Monday. MU made no effort to work the offense through him on Monday, but Wojo and staff did a great job of recognizing that, and pounding it down low to him a lot in the first 10 minutes, which opened up everything the remainder of the game for Rowsey, Reinhardt, Hauser, Howard, JJJ, etc.

Creighton had won over 100 straight at home when they scored 80+. Marquette has done good today ladies and gentleman.
Lot's of good points, both + and -. I am just going to roll around in this for a bit and enjoy.
Don't think I've seen a discussion on this and I'll have to break down some tape this morning enjoying a Bloody but I sense we put the ball in Katin's hands to begin the offense yesterday. Do we think this was an offensive wrinkle that Wojo installed because of matchups? Do we think is was a way to utilize talent slightly differently? Because I think it can be argued (and maybe proven statistically) that yesterday was one of the best and most efficient offensive games MU has played in a very long time. Thoughts?
I noticed it when Creighton went to their 1-3-1. I think Wojo put his two pint-sized snipers in the corner instead of having them have to try to pass over the top of the Creighton length out front. Let KR and HC handle the ball out their, pitch down to the corner shooters. Wow. Almost like coaching and adjustments. Nah.

Wojo had a great game today. (really sounds silly when talking about a coach, doesnt it) There were a couple of plays I remember in the first half, when Katin was hot, they ran that stupid weave play (that I hate mind you) at the top of the key to get him on a slower defender because they were switching everything, and iso'd him to let Katin abuse him off the dribble.
Mo was wrong. Don't know how many times he said it when Fox put his head on the screen and covered 1/2 of the screen with it during live game action, but he said (over and over) that he told Zierden if he makes 2 triples they win the game. Well, he made 2 triples and they lost the game.
Mintz was pretty damn good. Not looking forward to playing him the next few years.

This is spot on, and what impressed me was how quickly we adjusted to that. Creighton threw out the 1-3-1, and we immediately attacked it. Reinhardt and HC worked it past the first defender and either found shooters (got a nice open 3), then after that I believe HC found a seam in the zone, got underneath the second level, and received a pass for an uncontested drive.
Watching that, I have to think we had their 1-3-1 scouted because right off the bat we had 2-3 really good plays that exposed it badly.
Actually, it took two possessions for MU to make a change against the 1-3-1. I remember, because I was screaming at the TV to call a TO to review with the guys on how to attack it.
But Wojo made the change on the fly, had Haanif and KR up top with Howard and JJ in the corner and they worked it to perfection.
I did see somewhere that Wojo mentioned that they did work on the 1-3-1 in practice, so they were prepared for it.

I noticed in the box score that Markus played 24 mins and Rowsey 14. I don't recall a time when neither of them were in. Who was running the point?

They got Howard to the bench for the last roughly 1:20 of the first half. He had 2 fouls, Rowsey had 3. Rowsey picked up his 3rd with 4 and change left and Howard had to come back in at that point. Wojo had enough cushion to take both out to close out the half.

I'm from Omaha and was back in town for yesterday's game. My buddy's sister is a senior Comm student at CU and has a hand in the in-game promos and events. She had previously told me I was set to do the TV Shootout during the game (layup, free throw, 3 pointer, half court shot) and as I was on my way to the arena, then texted me that she instead gave it to a Creighton student who'd already done it twice......point being, I'll take full credit for yesterday's win for being on the receiving end of shitty Creighton karma.
So, you're welcome, guys and Chick. Awesome road win, probably the most opposing fans I've ever seen at a Jays game outside of UNL. For as intimidating as the CLink can get (top-5 most difficult road environment IMO), the Marquette contingent was certainly letting themselves be heard all game. thank you for the link - i'll rewatch in the background tomorrow.
Any truth to the rumor that the link won't work in Tampa/St. Pete?
Like winning the Brooklyn tourney, beating Providence twice, winning at Madison, beating Butler, winning at Georgia, dominating Vanderbilt, etc, this was another win for Wojo that didn't really count.
And if we beat Nova on Tuesday, that won't count either because they were due for another loss. Too bad for Wojo.

Per Pomeroy, the 66% chance 'Nova has Tuesday is their second lowest likelihood of a win (62% at Xavier) for the rest of the season. As they're projected for 3 losses, that pretty much means Tuesday is a lock for us to win ;)
Maybe my favorite postgame thread title so far this season.

Greg McDermott
"We had no fire on defense. Nobody wanted to step up and take charge on the floor."
Maurice Watson
KenPom now ranks us 7th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency — second in the Big East and 4 spots higher than Creighton. We're also second-worst in the conference in AdjD.
