Zero chance this works.
It doesn't work when there is one color (gold) and free t-shirts on all of the seats.
Yea, seems like a cool idea. There's no chance it works if they are making people buy a $10 shirt if they sit in a section where they don't already own the color.
Aren't the 1000 pint glasses enough for you people?! You expect free shirts now?
Agreed that it has little chance of success. But, I'll pin it here just so that more people can see it. We'll do what we can....

Fans in attendance for the National Marquette Day matchup with nationally ranked Xavier on Feb. 18 will have the unique opportunity to "stripe" the BMO Harris Bradley Center by wearing special T-shirts depending on the section they are sitting in for the game.
The Gold, Navy and Championship Blue T-shirts are available for $10 in the Spirit Shop in the Alumni Memorial Union (1442 W. Wisconsin Ave.) and online.
Tickets are also still available for the game and the 3-Point Play Mini Plan can be purchased for as little as $35 and includes Marquette's matchups against Xavier, Creighton and a third game of choice.
The weekend's festivities include the National Marquette Day Pep Rally at 6 p.m. CT Friday, Feb. 17 and a men's basketball alumni game at the Al McGuire Center at 7 p.m. Admission is free to both events.
All former players, coaches and staff members have been invited back for the weekend and will be recognized at Saturday's game against the Musketeers.
Why aren't they just putting shirts on the seats?
I wouldn't pay $5 for that shirt.
And put one of these babies under the seat.

The problem with yellow is that it's an awful color to wear. Adult men look ridiculous in yellow shirts. Yes, that includes old men in yellow sweater vests. Sure, I've collected a few gold t-shirts that have become workout shirts, but when's the last time you saw a grown man in a nice-looking yellow shirt? I'll be wearing my comfortable gray MU pullover as opposed to throwing on a junky old yellow t-shirt.

Bingo. It's a bad yellow.
Come on. If the Vols can pull this off in a 100,000 seat stadium, we can do some stripes in an 18000 seat arena:

Heh, they tried to do a gold out when I was a student but I was too superstitious to wear anything else besides my usual attire to games. That was when we lost like one home game in two years, the only home game I missed as well.
I'd be happy just to see people in the seats for this game, color coordinated or not. My Marquette watching this year has been 70% empty seat backs for an audience.
Newsie and I will be sitting in the mamajuanna section. We can't be bothered with this nonsense.

What are you talking a out? Marquette gold is watercolor. Wear it proudly young man.
Why even try this? They have literally put a gold tshirt on every chair in the past and still couldn't pull off a gold out.
Now they expect it to work with 1) people bringing their own shirt and 2) people knowing what color shirt to bring? I'm guessing more than 50% of ticket holders don't even know they are doing this.
And to the gold looks bad on me crowd, didn't they also try a baby blue out which went equally as bad?

I don't think the athletic department is incompetent, I just think this kind of stuff doesn't work well with our fan base. We're more like herding cats than a single unified pack of cattle.
I think it goes back to the traits of the university itself. Our tradition is that we don't really have traditions. We change uniforms, change mascots, change conferences, we rent our stadium, we've torn-down and rebuilt the campus a couple times. We're more a collection of random people that happened to go to school together and kinda lived nearby. We don't have a single unifying common experience so everything is more splintered. There isn't as much of a "Rah Rah State U" sentiment holding us together. We all just do our own thing, including what we wear to games.

I just think it is more simple. You have to make it easy. They should hand out the shirts.
The sweater-vests will sweater-vest it up by refusing to wear a t-shirt over their 1973 era attire, but this would look very impressive in person IF MU provides the shirt.

I would say that it worked fair. If you knew what was supposed to be happening, then you noticed it, but otherwise you wouldn't have suspected that anything special was going on.
Another view from the corner of the lower bowl in the first half. Lower bowl looked pretty good, upper kinda got worse as you looked further up (but who's looking at the top of the upper bowl)?
Great crowd tonight.
I noticed that at least two of the sections where the visiting fans get tickets (right behind X bench and upper bowl southwest corner) were in the Navy sections, so even the X fans helped out stripe out. I'm going to give Athletics the benefit of the doubt and say it was intentional.

I actually had forgotten about it until I noticed an entire navy blue upper deck section and thought, "Damn, that's a TON of Xavier fans." Then it hit me what was going on and I looked around and noticed it was solidly done.
Upper bowl wasn't great except that Sections 403-406 were impressive. I counted less than ten people who weren't wearing navy in those sections.
Gotta say it was much better than I expected. The only thing that really hurt was people wearing gold in navy or baby blue sections. It really stuck out.
Nicely done though.
Yeah, it was OK. I'd say the compliance was around 70% or so, so it kinda worked.
Far better than I expected, especially in the lower bowl. Well done by the athletic department getting out the stripes.
I didn't think the navy worked that well, nor did at least of my friends. Didn't stand out for me. Three colors is too many.
People we were with before the game didn't know anything about it.
I apologize for not doing my part. Couldn't find gold shirt for 102 this afternoon.
Tennessee, the Dayton of the SEC.
Looks like the folks who have season tickets did very well. Others who come on the mini plan or single game tickets, didn't get the memo.
Overall looked pretty sweet!
I think it worked. Light blue stripes harder to define.
I know shirts can be expensive but perhaps gruber could sponsor a gold out. Ever seat. We could do it! All it would take is on call, that's all!

Zero chance this works.
It doesn't work when there is one color (gold) and free t-shirts on all of the seats.

I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but I'm pretty sure it won't be.

Zero. Chance.
Not sure why they'd set themselves up for guaranteed failure.
Quote from: TallTitan34 on January 20, 2017, 08:49:28 AM
Why even try this? They have literally put a gold tshirt on every chair in the past and still couldn't pull off a gold out.
Now they expect it to work with 1) people bringing their own shirt and 2) people knowing what color shirt to bring? I'm guessing more than 50% of ticket holders don't even know they are doing this.
And to the gold looks bad on me crowd, didn't they also try a baby blue out which went equally as bad?

I don't think the athletic department is incompetent, I just think this kind of stuff doesn't work well with our fan base. We're more like herding cats than a single unified pack of cattle.

This would be a great idea, if they supplied the shirts. No chance this is going to work.
Okay, fellas. Time to admit it. Repeat after me:
I. Was. Wrong.
Hilltopper, nice try saying that there was 70% to mitigate your error. My best guess is that the compliance in the lower bowl was 85%, and 75% in the upper bowl. Student section was was at least 90%.

Fully admit it was way better than expectations, I was wrrrrerng. 8-)

Agreed on it being intentional, and good for them.
I wonder if the novelty of the stripes encouraged more people to participate than a regular gold-out. Or maybe people would prefer their own clothes to a crappy 2X tee.
I was absolutely wrong. Said as much on Twitter last night, guess I didn't get over here. Great job by Marquette on the striping. Though in the future, I'd leave the navy blue out. Those sections turned out fine, but it doesn't really pop like the light blue or gold.
You know, the thing is that the success demonstrated last night can be built on as folks add to their wardrobe. Most folks probably don't (didn't) have championship blue. But we do now.
Here's one thing NOT to do. Don't change the color for each section the next time they do this. Compliance will almost certainly go up if they maintain.

Navy was done so the Xavier fans didn't pop out.

Let's not get carried away. Look at the photo dsfire posted. The foreground section in the photo was supposed to be championship blue, but
maybe 50% of the folks in the photo complied - there is a mix of navy, gold, red(!) and others. The navy and gold sections were better.
Probably would have been better to stick with just alternating gold and navy, as I suspect most people don't have a ton of championship blue gear.

I don't know...championship blue section looks pretty good here:

And before you start going off on the navy
blotches, I am pretty sure most of those are seats that were empty at the time the picture was taken.
And while we are at it, here is a shot of the student section. My 90% guess might be a little low.

Hahah that looks better than I would have expected. Great idea...decent execution, but better game and victory.

Outstanding Sultan. Believe me!
Was wearing yellow in 411, but was pretty lonely. Took the wife and 10 year old son to Buck Bradley's before the game. My wife was laughing on the drive home today. She said that I had told her all of these stories about MU games and partying but that she had always assumed I was exaggerating. She and the boy had a hoot. And thanks to the group behind us, the boy now knows how to impressively string together obscenities. They would swear, he would giggle.
I was in 402 (in gold) and could see the lower bowl very well. It was clearly the effect that MU was going for. Well played.
