Our coach has started to get a very nice sense for when to go to his bench, how long to stay with his subs, when to get starters back in, etc.
On Wed, Rowsey was bad and Howard was good, so Rowsey was glued to the bench and Howard played almost the whole way.
Today, Howard was loose with the ball and picked up a couple of fouls and Rowsey was very good, so Rowsey got a lot of PT.
It sounds like, "Well, duh" but some coaches are reluctant to ride the hot hand as much as Wojo does. I think it's great strategy and he has used it well.
I also really like the way he has been getting Heldt into games early, even if Luke isn't in foul trouble. It helps keep Luke from getting into foul trouble and it makes sure Heldt isn't ice cold when called upon later. Plus, it has made Matt a better contributor. I think it has been great for both players.
I also believe Wojo has a nice feel on minutes for Duane and JJJ.
As a head coach, he's still a relative newby. He's improving, as is his team.
But there probably are some Scoopers who think Wojo should be fired because we didn't win by 50.
When we fell behind 5-0, I was temped to post something about how embarrassing it was and nobody should try to "twist" things because changes had to be made ... but even I have my limits of teal-less silliness.
We've got 9 guys and every one of them is contributing and buying into what Wojo needs 'em to do. Guys like Matt and Duane are perfect examples.
I agree 100%. He has a "rotation" now. At the first TO, he's putting in Rowsey and Heldt. Gets DWil and KR in soon thereafter. Then makes decisions based on foul trouble, hot hand and match-ups. While the team is not deep in the sense that if one or two guys go down, foul trouble can become an issue, but is deep in the sense that when all 9 are healthy, it is well balanced and everyone can play.
I agree. One exception is that I'd like to see Duane get a little bit more of JJJs time. I know that seems minor but JJJ looses focus at times and Duane brings some intensity. Plus I loved the two sweet assists he had yesterday.
I think you are already seeing that. Duane had more minutes than JJJ v. Seton Hall and they were about even yesterday.
I hope Duane ends the season well and sets him up for a big senior year.

Nice, even insightful, post - until the final two sadly predictable and gratuitous paragraphs. There are a few (especially immediately following disappointing performances) who are over the top in their attacks on Wojo (and worse, on some of the players). A few. But almost every post you (and a few others) make goes over the top on the issue.

In our 5 BEast games, KR has always been in the group first off the bench.
Great post Jay Bee, I like what Wojo is doing, I wish Rowsey was better at breaking the press. It seems to me he stops his dribble to soon, but man can he fill it up. We need to get one of these next 3.

As it looks now, Howard and Duane will be the guards with Rowsey and Cheatham, not much else there right now. Cain maybe can play some 2 as there will be
a bunch of small forwards next year. Cain, Cheatham, Sam, Sacre, more than enough. The question I do not know the answer to, is Sacre working as a 2 or 3
in practice right now?

Nice, even insightful, comment on my post.
I was having fun with the Wojo thing - we lose, fire him immediately; we win but not by enough; give him one more game and then fire him! Sorry you didn't enjoy my hilarity!
