Title: 100th Anniversary of MU basketball today
Post by: Knight Commission on January 13, 2017, 02:47:48 AM
If memory serves me correctly, MU's first official basketball game was 100 years today.

They were more grounded than their rival, Whitewater Abnormal.  Mascot: the Weirdo.

They changed their nickname in 1916 from "The Abby's" - their alumni still refuse to acknowledge the new mascot as representing the institution.

Thanks for posting - 100 years is pretty cool.

I'm sure that all those players are long gone now but does anyone know of any interviews with them or basically any of those players from the pre Rand/Kojis days? I'm honestly curious what the attitude toward basketball was before we jumped on the national scene in 1955.

WWI-era interviews are a tough find for anything, let alone collegiate basketball.

Delmore had 15.
Devine had 14.

Since Devine sounds too Fighting Irishy, I'm going with Delmore.

They featured something called "sweater coats" back in the day according to their ad. My, how they have evolved with the shift to sweater vests to adjust to the tastes of the modern man. Burgardt's were certainly way before their time.
