Title: How to play Seton Hall?
Post by: NCMUFan on December 31, 2016, 08:40:43 AM
Not much success last year against SHU.
I hope they figured it out for this year.
Tough to play thugs on their home court and get a call.

Need Matt Heldt and Katin to make the most of their playing time.
I am hoping for similar to the GT game where heldt comes in frequently for Luke even with Luke out of foul trouble. We need to match their junk years mentality and keep Luke out of foul trouble and ready for the second half.

Thugs is an understatement, and their fan base is worse, but things may be changing with their new coach.  The arena is large and not a great student presence, so I think we can get calls, the hulligans notwithstanding.

"Thug" is not a very good word to use in this day and age, as it is filled with racial overtones.

Otherwise, I hope how we play tomorrow is ... fantastic.

We have to at least challenge them on the glass. Team rebounding will be key. We likely won't win that battle, but at least need to be competitive.

The teams that have beat the Hall have done it by attacking inside. We can't fall in love with the three because they're better at defending the perimeter than they are inside. We still likely need to hit threes because they're a big part of our offense, but we can't ignore midrange and in shots.

Last, we probably have to win the turnover battle. We're better on both sides in that regard, need to let that strength shine through.

We need to shoot a high percentage and have minimal turnovers. That will offset the rebounding disadvantage.

Obviously their physical play and monster offensive rebounding will pose problems.  That said,  they have plenty of weaknesses which match up well with us.

They don't shoot from outside all that well and given our poor perimeter D that is good news.  Also,  they turn the ball over plenty which is one of our defensive strengths.

If somehow we can keep them off the boards we definitely have a chance.

Any word on Duane?
Really hoping we don't end up with both PG's with 4 fouls with 5 min left in the game again.

I'm looking for Luke to have another 4 Volley hits to our guys on the arc and help our rebounding numbers.

The are better at defending the three, but part of that is luck. They have only played three teams who have shot better than 35% from deep on the season.* They did limit Creighton to well under their average though.

*Bee, Jay. "Random factoid he mentioned" One of the MUBB boards, don't remember which one. 2016.

We used to take for granted that there were overtones when Wiscy fans said it about MU teams.

Since Free Throws are the most important thing in CBB

It's worth noting they are terrible while we are elite

Haven't watched them at all really, but my guess is if you compete on the boards you'll have a good chance.

Biggest game of the year, until tomorrow at about 6 PM. Get after them Warriors.

Pack in a zone and make them beat us from 20 feet. We play man they'll abuse us.

Nah, FTs are a big part of their game - important for them.

They shoot them poorly compared to us, but team FT% no matta. FTs still a big plus for their offense

Willard has been there half a decade.

I understand the thought but I don't agree. Zone leaves you very vulnerable to offensive boards which is the best part of Seton Hall's game. Seton Hall's starting lineup has two non-scorers in it (Madison Jones and Ish Sanogo). I think you roll out a man to man and you can hard double Delgado to keep him from abusing you in the post.

I like our chances if we can do this successfully.  If we shoot 50% or higher from three I really like our chances.

It should definitely be a good one.

What is "half" a decade in the history of a program?  Season ticket holders don't turn over in "half" a decade.  However, I  do get your point and I  personally like coach Willard, I  would consider him a gentleman, the fan base not so much.  If we are talking about the fan base abuse of the refs, that is still an issue in  Newark.

We haven't shot 50% or higher from 3 in any game yet this year. I like our chances if we hit that mark too! #LNBU

We haven't hit 50% from 3 but it feels like we are....

We win:
if we consistently hit 3's (pervious years this would be a joke/pipe dream...but this year its part of MU).
if we can shoot normally on an away court (not easy in college ball).
if the middle tier guys step up rebounding (We don't have to win the rebounding)
If we keep the energy up all game. Steals, etc...
If we keep our heads like last game and minimize heroics. (JJJ keep driving but keep your eyes open. Katin no heat check 3's...pass it around and take the open ones.)
if we stay out of foul trouble.

GT proved we can beat a bigger team even with a hot hand. All of the above "if"s we have done.

If I've learned anything from JayBee, the key is that we shoot a far higher FT% than Seton Hall.

By the way, what time is ND's bowl game this weekend?

Not a whizz at this but how did this correlate with us slowing WAY down the last 4 min and having almost 3 shot clock violations. If we had kept the rest of the game pace, we would have been in the 80's I would assume.

Prob not a lot

Game fell short by approx 9 possessions (each team) vs projections

But I'd need to look back at the pxp to confirm/add more color
