If not this metric, then what?
UCLA is the first school to receive 100,000 freshman application

More than 100,000 students have applied to enter UCLA next fall, making the prestigious public university in Southern California the first in the country to report a six-figure total for freshman applications.
University of California officials disclosed Monday that 102,177 students are seeking a spot in the Class of 2021 on the Westwood campus in Los Angeles, up 5 percent from last year. The target size for the entering class is about 6,500.
Those figures don't include tens of thousands of expected transfer applicants.
Big business. Da application fees alone fund several school departments, ai na?
You'd have to factor in the population of the state, and the in-state discount for CA residents. The fact that most of the high-number of schools are in the UC system seems to indicate that those factors are pretty significant....
Great weather, great school, great lookin' broads. Why not, hey?
So what?
More people eat at McDonald's than any other place in the U.S. Should that be factored in when putting together the list of America's best restaurants?
You're forgettin' or minimizin' the great school aspect, ai na?

Great Basketball!
All this means is UCLA is a solid candidate to be No. 2 behind Marquette.
It's also one application for all the UC schools in CA, so a lot of kids just apply to apply (I think its an extra 20 bucks a school or so)

I read somewhere that 25% of the population of CA under 18 has never been out of the state.
CA residents are some of the most insular people in the country. They think the ends of the country are San Diego and Sacramento.

I grew up in Connecticut, a state so tiny it was almost impossible not to leave it. Still, I had never been west of Lancaster, PA (only a few hours from my hometown) until my mommy and daddy drove me to Marquette for freshman orientation. Chose MU sight unseen.
I'm fairly impressed that 75% of Californians under 18 HAVE been outside the state.

Need a passport and only 36% of Americans have one.

1. You didn't need a passport to travel to and from Mexico until 2009.
2. If you had bothered to Google the more specific question, you would have found out that over
60% of Californians have a passport. http://chartsbin.com/view/1147

Don't you think that 40% is overweighted to those under 18? And for the last 8 years they needed a passport to get into Mexico.
Let me focus this ...
The CA state schools top the application. Texas schools do not.
After adjusting for population, my argument is many people in CA are perfectly happy with spending the rest of their life in the state. They are the most insular people in the country (what we used to think about people from Manhattan).

And now your argument is that the statistic you originally quoted is meaningless.
Whatever, dude. I don't think that winning stupid internet arguments is that important.
