Title: [Paint Touches] P&R D goes MIA
Post by: PaintTouches on November 18, 2016, 09:47:06 AM
Marquette's pick and roll defense looked bad last night. Upon further review, it was worse than I thought.

There are myriad ways to defend the pick and roll.  IIRC, didn't JFB discuss the 6 different ways that buzz defended it during a pre-draft interview?   Michigan was ready for MU and exploited a poor scheme, lack of size, and Luke over-pursuing without turning the PG and then recovering glacially slow.  Other than that....

Nice job, Andrei. So who's it on? I think even the lonesome cowboy would've slapped 'em upside the head.

From what I recall, they did a much better job with the help defense in the second half--I remember a few possessions where a guy came across the lane to stop the roller.  So this seems to have been a problem in the scheme that Beilein had Michigan prepped to exploit, and we took too long to recognize.  Seems like the righted the ship on it in the second half, and Michigan had to start taking a lot more contested threes that they started missing.

So who's it on?

Plenty of blame to go around. Fisch is ineffective at disrupting the ball handler. Haanif is slow to make decisions and react. Katin failed to rotate and help. Traci screened easily. Wojo and staff slow to react and adjust. It isn't on one person. The scheme and execution was off.

Definitely, but you can't wait to make adjustments until the half when you are down 20 points. Don't have time to go through the full half, but the defense continued to give up easy buckets all half.

I found the second half to be darn near meaningless.  Whenever you have one team playing with a big lead like that, I don't think they are focused enough to give anyone a true test.

"Winning the second half," especially THAT second half, is an empty victory.

This. Everything was slow.  I thought Heldt did a great job defending the P&R...at least better than Fischer.  Could have been because the communication was there for the on ball defender on the recovery after the screen, or just that Heldt recognized the defense has recovered.  MU also allowed the ball handler to turn the corner, even with the post helping.  That compounded with a slow rotating weak side defense is just a recipe for disaster - as evident from last night's outcome.  I thought they played a reactive defense instead of an anticipated one, which is something they showed us against Vandy and Howard.

P&R is the hardest thing to defend in basketball, imo, because there are so many outcomes if it's executed properly.  The best thing you can do is take away the 1, 2, and maybe 3 options and recover.  Someone will have to be left open, but help/weak side rotations need to be quick and communication is essential.

Disagree. I've been betting on/watching a lot of college bball this year... If one team gets smacked in the first half, they usually get smacked in the 2nd half. At least the first 10-12 minutes. We fought back. It might not count for much, but it's better than the alternative.

I'm not sure it is better than the alternative.

I agree. Now had they made one of the multiple attempts that would have made it a game, then it could've meant something, but every time we had a chance to get to single digits, we'd miss and they'd make. Every chance Marquette had to bring the fans back into it, we squandered.

At the end of the day, we never really threatened enough to make that half meaningful.
