Title: We didn't respect the process
Post by: wadesworld on November 17, 2016, 09:55:35 PM
We gave up a 9-0 run mid first half and completely got out of character. Suddenly it was Katin, JJJ, and Cheatham going one on one with tunnel vision to the tin and their defense collapsed and made it impossible for them to score, or it was drop the ball into Luke for a straight post and never move off of it, just wait for him to shoot a jump hook over a double team.

The offense will be fine. We started seeing what we want and need to do (high pick and roll, move the ball off of it, player movement off the ball) a little bit after the game was out of hand and we got a few good looks. Stay the course and we'll be okay to withstand some runs.

The defense was bad but it was more the effort in my opinion.

Just a bad night of basketball. Bad shooting, bad decision making, bad defense, bad officiating. Sometimes it just ain't your night.

Big game tomorrow. Smoke the Panthers.

Sometimes a wake up call can be a good thing. Obviously I'd much rather we didn't look like crap in this game, but hopefully we can learn and improve from this game.

Good  coaches recognize this.

I agree on the offense, but the defensive strategy was naive at best. You can't jump everything, double everything against that offense. They were scrambling from the start and never recovered.

Also, Fischer must have learned PNR defense from Greg Monroe.

The problem that I saw was the rotations. In our first 3 games (including the exhibition) we've hedged with the man who is guarding the picker all around the perimeter and relied on the lower off ball defenders to rotate down and guard the cutter until the hedger could recover. The rotation to help the hedger was never there tonight.

Good  coaches recognize this.

Find me a person who has never been blown out as a coach and I'll find you a person who has never coached.

See Iowa last year. That game really turned the team on its head. Hope this game gets us thinking.

You forgot bad announcing.

You're entirely correct on that.

Yeah, I think this is an early  wake up, and we see a much better game against Pitt.

Yep, it takes a quality opponent to exploit your weaknesses and Michigan did just that.  We have a lot to work on.

You have to remember two things:  1.  EVERYTHING was falling for Michigan in the first half.  They reverted to more normal shooting in the second half.  2.  We made adjustments and won the second half.  That was completely different from the Iowa game.

That said, we didn't shoot our 3s (probably because there was a Michigan hand in the face of most of the perimeter shooters) or execute the same gameplan as we had in the first two games.  This doesn't feel like Iowa.  Short turnaround time excepted, I hope we see the real team today.

It was pretty simple: Michigan was too big and too good.

What's even sadder is a) they're not that big and b) they're not that good.

Last year
Kentucky lost by 18 to LSU
Xavier lost by 31 to Nova and 14 to Creighton
Nova lost by 23 to Oklahoma
Purdue lost by 14 to Illinois

All of those teams were top 15 teams last season.

If you start looking down the list at bubble type teams you will find many more.

it isn't fun to watch but it happens....and will likely happen again.

Hopefully they bounce back today

Seriously. Doom and gloom.

If we bounce back and win today, all is fine.

Buzz made it his job to get blown out in the early season:

2009 DAYTON! by 14 & Tennessee by 12 (Round of 32)
2012 Vandy by 17 at Home (Sweet 16)
2013 Florida by 33 (Elite 8)

If we lay an egg vs Pitt I'll be concerned but right now it's just a bump in the road.

I am not concerned *that* we lost.  I am concerned that we have lost games in the exact same manner since Wojo has gotten here.

Now of course that could change today.

Hey pud!  I'm fully aware.  Fully aware dating back to 2015 that we'd be in this same spot with Wojo at the helm.  But knock yourself out.  Keep #respectingtheprocess to mediocrity.

15-16 KenPom Ranking: #93
Current KenPom Ranking: #34

I would be very surprised if we fell to 93 this season. Certainly possible. If it does happen, my guess is that Wojo will be gone or at least have third degree burns on his ass (barring multiple catastrophic injuries)
