On newsstands now — a good way to fill some time until the start of the season. Pretty entertaining, to say the least. A few things that stood out:
Oregon picked #1
The Ducks. Really. A program that hasn't appeared in a Final Four in almost 80 years. Oregon seems perennially overrated in everything (except hype). I'll believe it when I see it.
Only 4 Big East teams make the NCAA tournament
Nova. Xavier. Butler. Creighton. That's it. I guess it's possible. But this might be an even less credible prediction than Oregon as national champions.
10 ACC teams make the NCAA tournament
Out of 15. Really. Maybe Dick Vitale is making all of these picks. Or perhaps the editors are just trying to make a splash with some truly outrageous predictions.
MU picked for 8th in the Big East
Behind Providence. Ahead of only DePaul and St. John's. Wojo and the team have no shortage of bulletin board material this season. It's time to prove the doubters wrong.
Duane Wilson named preseason 3rd team Big East
I hope Duane has an outstanding season. But this is one of the most unexpected and unlikely predictions I've seen yet.
Big East newcomers - best shooter: Markus Howard
"There isn't a better shooter among the freshman class anywhere." Jay Bee, when did you start writing for Lindy's? Excited to see just how good he can be.
No. 1 signing coup: Marquette landing Markus Howard
Now I know that Jay Bee writes for Lindy's. Hope he's right.

So Lindy's is full of crap. Except when it's not. ;)

Oregon is going to be very, very good, as they were last year. Other than football the last 2 years, I'm not sure I remember them being overrated in anything really.

As much as I try to look at Marquette and college basketball objectively, I'm still a fan — and hold plenty of highly biased opinions. Doesn't hurt to be called out on them.
That's part of what makes MU Scoop interesting. While there are exceptions, of course, the comments, discussion and analysis here add to my understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of MU basketball. (And help make the offseason a little more bearable.)
Lindy's is a rag. Pure rubbish. Pay no attention to their CBB preview.

They did go 31-7 last year enroute to Pac-12 regular season and tournament titles while also making the Elite 8. I mean...that's a pretty decent season. They do also return three of their top four in terms of minutes. Not saying they're #1 good, but they should be in the mix.

More than decent. But they were a #1 seed and lost before reaching the Final Four. I'd guess most fans felt they didn't live up to expectations. That's a tough standard, but at that level nothing is easy.
I'm sure they'll be a contender again this year. The Ducks have lots of talent, are well-coached and play a fun style of basketball. Pretty much what I'd like to see out of Marquette. But I can find a reason to dislike just about any school outside of 16th and Wisconsin Avenue. For Oregon, I see more flash than substance — at least until they prove it on the court.
Somebody needs to explain why these objective outsiders aren't entitled to their opinion. Looking g at the negative:
MU missed the tourney last year and lost their best player.
MU has one experienced player taller than 6'6.
MU doesn't have a star.
MU has a whole lot of similar players.
Wojo hasn't shown he can we win as a head coach.
We can all come up with counter arguments, but if an outsider chooses to focus on those things, then their conclusions are justified. It is on MU to prove them wrong.
