Title: Marquette Travel Plans
Post by: brewcity77 on September 01, 2016, 08:33:32 AM
After learning her PTO would be slashed and a new system stayed at the end of the year, suddenly my wife was far more amenable to some Marquette based travel this year. We're going to Annapolis for Vanderbilt, then doing the quick turn around for NYC.

For people that have been, what's the best ticket option for NYC? Should I go with the university ticket office, buy online, or try scalping? The wife is worried about fake tickets with scalpers.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Wait until the last minute.  Spending even face value is too much.  These NYC games are for TV.  No one goes to MSG so you'll be able to get good seats cheap right before tip.

Doesn't answer your question at all, but we actually planned to go to Nashville for Packers/Titans this year. Then Marquette announced the Vanderbilt game the same weekend. Thought momentarily that we'd be able to hit both games , but now I'll just be watching the game at a bar with a bunch of Vanderbilt fans  ::)

When I was in NYC for the BET a few years ago scalpers were pretty regulated and I didn't hear of anyone who had issues.

Also, MU has been setting up shop at Mustang Sally's (near MSG) recently.  Going over there pre tip will be a good spot to find extras in seats near MU fans.  Tir Na Nog is another good spot to hit pre game.  Enjoy, nothing beats MSG.

I can't comment on MSG, but for Brooklyn last year, we could have bought the cheapest ticket possible (either from a scalper or at the box office) and then joined the rest of the Marquette gang courtside.

Last few trips I've been staying at the Hilton Garden W35th & 6th.  It's about 3 blocks, and some nice stops along the way to MSG Feile, Stout,  Blarney Rock, etc

Try to sneak in for free.

Failing that, what others have said is true. You'll be able to buy tickets at the gate.

Vanderbilt fans don't watch the Commodores in a bar. They watch them in their country clubs, usually Belle Meade or Richland.

If you go on Seatgeek (search 2K classic, not Marquette), you can find great lower level tickets.  Right now, you can get row 5 (first row of the section), section 120 for $80 a ticket.

I always go to Stubhub the night before the game. There are plenty of good deals. At last years event we got tickets for $11 each before ticket charge etc and the ushers encouraged us to seat close to the MU bench .

I stay at the Midtown Manhattan LaQuinta.  Reasonable prices for that part of town.  Clean and comfortable.  Easy walk to MSG.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Definitely will wait to get tickets until we get there. Figuring out the best place to stay, my wife found an AirBNB in Brooklyn she likes, but it looks like there are similarly priced hotel rooms fairly close to MSG. Guessing we'll do most of our touristy stuff around Manhattan, so that seems like a decent location.

Hotel 91 in China Town has always treated me well, although it isn't particularly close to MSG. Manhattan is super easy to get around once you figure out the subway system.

Hi Brew-

I've lived in the NYC area my entire life.  Grew up in the burbs but have lived in the city since 6 months after graduation over 20 yrs ago.  In terms of hotels, the area just south of MSG has exploded in recent years.  My top hotel choice by far is the NoMad about a 5-10 min walk away.  It's not cheap but will be a great NYC experience.  https://www.thenomadhotel.com/.

If the Nomad is unavailable or too high priced, the ACE hotel hotel one block north of the NoMad would be a great alternative. http://www.acehotel.com/newyork

If neither of those work, the Kimpton Eventi, http://www.hoteleventi.com would be great too.  Not as hip or cool as the other two but great nevertheless.  http://www.hoteleventi.com.

All are less than a 10 min walk from MSG.

In the heart midtown is 1 Hotel Central Park.  Not near MSG but 58th / 6th Ave.  It's still only a 8 min subway ride from MSG though  but much closer to Central Park 5th Ave. shopping, etc.  I'd never even heard of the place until a couple of weeks ago when my company had an offsite there.   Great Place

https://www.1hotels.com/central-park?utm_source=google&utm_medium=search&utm_campaign=CP%20Main:%20Brand%20[US]%20(S)%20^KW%20*AD%20^RLSA-B&gclid=CJPXv7jN784CFYVehgodjckC2g

All are great options but if you can get the Nomad for a good rate...anything under $300 for that time of year I'd book it!

In terms of tix, I'd normally say wait because MU's allocation generally isn't great but with so many Michigan alums in the city it might be more challenging than normal.  Make no mistake that game may as well be in Ann Arbor as it won't be anything close to neutral unfortunately.

Hope that helps.

Nah, not yet. Cheapest about $300/each right now; leaving MSP 7am on the 17th, returning late morning the 19th.  Should drop a bit over the next couple weeks and I'll pounce.

I still think the 92nd street Y rents out rooms.  Quite cheap, not bad and it is easy to get around Manhattan.

If you like a good pickup game, several ex NBA and WNBA players play there from time to time.
