David Cubillan and Venezuela open play tonight at 8:30 against Serbia.
Awesome!
Okay, so how many MU athletes have competed through the years regardless of country?
- Ralph Metcalfe
- Butch Lee
- Dwayne Wade
- Jimmy Butler

Speedskaters, I'll bet.
Plus Virginia Thrasher who just won the air rifle gold after going deer hunting with dad and grandpa just MUST be from Waupaca or Antigo, right? 8-)
nm
Go Canada!

Wasn't there a female on the rifle team? Maybe the 90s?

Please state time zone. Not everyone lives in the same time zone.
World Record holder in 100m and later a US congressman, MUs Ralph Metcalfe ran Track 1932 & 1936
(second only to the Legend Jesse Owens...btw ..this wednesday 8/3, was the 80th anniversary of the race)
It's time to take advantage of Lake Michigan and start a sailing program. Georgetown has an olympian in sailing and they probably have to practice on a damn river! A sailing program means more preppies which means more donations. What'd it take - four years for men's lacrosse to win a Big East title?
Marquette 2020 Big East sailing champs!

Great link Mr. Glow. Especially when it reveals that Marquette boasts half (2 of 4) of the current men's basketball olympians, and the only women's basketball olympian ( if you limit it to players, otherwise DePaul's Doung Bruno is there to coach)

I got to watch Plouffe play a lot when I was a band member. She has guard skills but since she was so tall (6'3") she ended up playing center most of the time. I'll have to check in on Canadian women's basketball to catch her play!
I saw Trenni is the tennis sideline reporter and Ben Tracy is the CBS correspondent in Rio.
Also while listening to the Poscast this morning with Tom Hammond, Al was the basketball commentator for the 88 Olympics, which I never knew.

I can understand how it may be difficult to keep from interjecting when you overhear the couple sitting at the next table racking their brains over a question to which you know the answer (or have something to contribute), but mefeels like we might be infringing upon a private conversation in this thread.
Is anyone else just completely bored by Olympic basketball?
My thing, in every sport that I played, was the competition. When there is the capability is there to beat teams by 100 points, it is just a garbage game. No different than playing against your 10 year old brother when you are 17. The score will be whatever you want it to be.

Agreed.

I mean, that Spain-Croatia game looked pretty exciting.

The group stage is boring, the knockout stage where the lesser teams have been weeded out is usually some fun basketball. Especially with some of the olympics rules.
Watching US-China, Demar Derozan was on a 2 on 1 break and faked a pass to the wing before taking it to the rim. Normally in the NBA, this ends up in a contested layup. However, it was some 6' Chinese guard playing the 2 and Derozan took one look at him and threw down a 2 handed dunk that wasn't particularly explosive or spectacular, just really effortless and barely contested. I started loudly laughing in the bar cause it looked so ridiculous.

Yeah, it's not that much fun to watch. Enjoy the other events a great deal more. Yesterday's women's cycling was great, even though the American lost the gold to finish 4th in the last 200 or so meters. Swimming has been good as well. Too bad only 2 women can go to the gymnastics all-around, Gabby would have been in line for bronze, instead she can't compete because first and second were both Americans.
El Relampago is apparently his nickname.

Really impressed with the course. That was extremely exciting albeit extremely dangerous. Many of the well known downhill riders in the men's field wiped out. And with the rain in the women's run, that was stupid dangerous. I hope more positive updates about Van Vleuten come soon. I've been so worried about her. Nastiest spill I've ever seen on a cycling course.

Ners beat his 17 year old brother when he was 10!
It is tough to watch some of these events that are certain to be blow outs. I didn't see the Ladecky race but I thought it was astounding that the best swimmers in the world had only a marginally better chance than I did of beating that young lady.
Cooby looked like a Munchkin in the game last night. Even smaller than I remember!
After he swished a 3 in the third quarter, pulling Venezuela within about a bazillion, Marv Albert struggled to come up with his name. A few seconds later, he got it, and Doug Collins said something about Cooby being a streak shooter but a real solid player during his time at Marquette.

At least they made the 1st quarter interesting.

I know you're joking, but I feel the need to gloat about Georgetown's sailing program.
Georgetown won a national championship in Sailing this year and has multiple national title to our name. If there were BE sailing we would dominate it.
I thought this thread was about Katherine Plouffe on women's Team Canada but great to hear Cubi is still playing.
