First, in the category of yesterday's news, Wally has picked up enough credits to graduate this summer. Although he has eligibility, he's not coming back for fall track. Speculation is that he wants to be a grad transfer and play basketball, which is his first love.
Wally seems to have been most accomplished in track when he red shirted in bball, and focused in track.
Howard is fitting in extremely well with the team, and has made up for lost time due to Team USA obligations. He's also very young. Most of his teammates on Team USA returned to go back to high school. If I'm not mistaken, he was the only one to be moving on to college after Team USA. Along with being young, his physical presence is more elite HS level. That said, this young man will be an incredible 4 year contributor when he graduates.
Sounds good. Thanks for the updates. Congrats to Wally on graduating.
Hope Wally finds a good fit somewhere.
Great news about Wally graduating. I hope he finds a place to play his final year of eligibility. I think he will be an attractive addition to a mid or low major.

Much bigger point (or, actually, smaller point) RC 83's post. 'his physical presence is more elite HS level.' Sounds like Traci is working him over and will probably start.

This isnt too surprising to me.
Our whole team needs to get stronger and yet HS elite physical presence is still a jump to what it takes to have acceptable college physical presence.
Time for boot camp.

Of course. And as many have said, Howard may get many of his minutes playing the #2. his shooting skills will come in handy. I fully expect Traci to be the PG and to start most games. What I think we do know is that the Hanni PG experiment is over.
I think Howard cuts into Duane's minutes more than Traci's. Especially if Howard is hitting the 3 and Duane is not.
Was Howard playing point for USA? When I saw his high school game, he was mostly off the ball. I wonder if Wojo goes with Cheatham at backup point due to more experience, or if Howard is the backup.
There's still room for him to improve, but strength-wise Markus is as close to college-ready as you can get, especially for a 17 year old. I have no worries about him holding up physically. Natural leader, charismatic, just a great kid from everything I've heard. He and Sam have really hit it off as well. Hoping for some good pick and pop chemistry between the two of them.

Not only is that accurate, about half the team is headed back to high school for their
junior year. Howard won't even turn 18 until the last week of the 2016-17 regular season.

I would have no problem with a staring line up of:

Sandy (Hustle)

I visited Cincinnati en route to reunion weekend. My kids ended up with Cincy Bearcat t-shirts as our hotel was next to the university. At Marquette, I had to ask the girl behind the Info Desk in the Union a question. My kids had their UC shirts on. She was from Ohio apparently and then starting asking my kids Cincinnati questions and for some reason mentioned the University of Dayton before we explained we're from Connecticut. After walking away from the Info Desk, I said to my kids "Anyone but Dayton." They thought it funny and would repeatedly tell me over the course of the weekend, "Dad, anyone but Dayton, right?" I chuckled everytime.

I would. Big time. Book it, short of injury Hanni is starting every game this year and probably for the rest of his MU career. Dude was first team all Big East newcomer. He actually may be our best player this year if he makes the usual Frosh to Soph jump. And I concur with Rowsey. He's playing meaningful minutes.
Truth be told, Hanni and Rowsey are the reason Duane needs to elevate his game.

Frankly, that's both the best and worst thing about this team. I can easily see 10 guys, Carter, Howard, Wilson, Cheatham, Johnson, Rowsey, Reinhardt, Cohen, Heldt, and Fischer all being worthy of meaningful minutes. I also wouldn't be shocked if Anim on the basis of work ethic and improvement and Hauser on the basis of size and deep shooting are pushing hard to get their way on to the floor as well. So yeah...that's the whole roster that could very well be worthy of playing time, but obviously the downside to that is there's only so much time to go around.
Okay...I fibbed a bit...the worst thing is still the question of who's going to rebound the ball, especially on the defensive end.

What if I suggested a starting lineup of Marotta, Howard, Anim, Hauser, and Heldt? ;)
Hauser will get some quality time.
The logical solution is a boot camp and a 40 minutes of (reading Ners greatest hits on Derrick Wilson) defensive approach, pressuring 94 feet, pushing the ball, and if the break isn't there lobbing it into Luke and starting the offense from there.

It also gets resolved by the new players not playing up to a level that justifies their taking minutes from veterans. As an example, Howard may be the more talented player on paper than Rowsey or The Engine but there isn't a big enough talent gap to make up for the significance of the experience gap.
I see TC (rowsey sub), Hanni (DW, Howard subs), JJJ (DW sub), Katin (Cohen, Amin if anyone can find him, Hauser subs), Luke (Heldt).
Everyone will get minutes but starting BE time, there's gonna be an 8-9 man roster.

Not sure if serious (Ners references always make me pause) but I agree with this. I think our strength is in our depth and high pressure defense helps minimize our lack of rebounding.

At that point he thought Carter at point and Haanif at small forward was a better combination. I am looking at how do you get the best five players on the floor. I think we can agree that Fischer and Haanif are locks. Most of us, including me, think JJJ is going to have a very good senior year.Consensus here is that Reinhardt starts at the four, but I think it will be either Hauser of Cohen.
C. Fischer
PF Hauser/Cohen
G Haanif
G JJJ
G Reinhardt
Three big guards keeps the team from being small.
Wilson 6-2 & Carter 6-1 make us smaller
Rowsey 5-10 and Howard 5-11 make us really small.

I like Tracy and if you go back and look at my posts on the argument on who would start I was picking Tracy over Howard. Tracy is our only true point guard. However, when I look at the size of the team and the fact that Wojo wants all the guards to be able to play point on the floor a true point guard is not as important. Tracy may not be the best option even though he is the best point guard on the team. If you start Tracy you are losing 4-5 inches of team height based on the team I listed. You start Wilson you are losing 3-4 inches of team height. Start Wilson and Tracy you are losing 7-9 inches. Start one of the midgets and it gets worse. Why not a guarantee a bigger team should be better rebounding and better defensively. About any combination you put out there will be good offensively, so the deciding factor has to be which is the better defensive and rebounding team. Now of course Wojo will make the final decision on what is the best combination and that could include one, two or three of Carter, Howard and Rowsey. Rightly or wrongly I would go with the height.

I think most coaches would lean to having the point guard on the floor. However, Wojo has repeatedly said he wants all of his guards to be able to initiate the offense. The point guard is more important in a Crean offense than it is in a Wojo offense. Besides that Haanif would be the point guard on the team I listed. Wojo has already used him at point and may or may not be done with doing that.
