Off the court.... a ball kick is clearly an assault...on the court its just a flagrant foul.
We call it a crime....only depending on where it occurs. lol

I hope we learn this was a stupid bar fight and not something more sinister so that we can enjoy the obvious humor.

This has always troubled me... so I can go and rabbit punch someone on the basketball court without fear of reprisal because of what?  My opponent's implied waiver of his right not to be violently assaulted on the field of play?

Maybe if the leagues would ball up and start allowing prosecutions for incidents which are so clearly outside the nature of competition - and I'm talking about stuff that goes well beyond mere unsportsmanlike conduct to the point where the action itself could never happen without deliberate, specific and malicious intent - then maybe we could go back to being entertained by spirited competition instead of gratuitous displays of testosterone overload.

Then again, "Ow, My Balls" is destined to be the most popular show on television in a few years.

I thought this when the whole Albert Haynesworth situation went down.

Didn't a couple of hockey players actually get convicted for on-ice brutality many years back? I know there were several court cases but I can't remember what they amounted to.

Marty McSorely was convicted of assault for slashing Donald Brasher across the head and Dino Cicarelli (Dino Sucks!) was convicted of assault for attacking Luke Richardson. Todd Bertuzzi pleaded guilty to an assault charge for attacking Steve Moore.
Perhaps it's no coincidence that all three of these events happened in Canada?

Well, they were assaults (IIRC), so they deserved to be punished. But the NHL is complicit in that it encourages needless violence and welcomes goons who can do nothing but brawl.

Have you watched an NHL game recently?  Not just a pro-hockey game, but the actual NHL, because the goonery has been largely removed from the game over the past decade.  AHL, different story.

No coincidence there. Unfortunately, there is a literal boundary on the matter because Canadians mostly aren't entertained by such antics, whereas after the McSorely incident, NHL ratings briefly - albeit temporarily - shot up in the US, especially the South (though that might be largely the result of ancillary reasons, not actual interest in the game).

In fairness to the AHL, they've been taking a very proactive stance against staged fighting. They've enacted a new rule for next year making it an automatic suspension to fight immediately before or after a faceoff.

And you're right about the NHL. Fighting is way down and the goon has gone the way of the dodo. Fights per game this year was the lowest since the 1960s.
Of course, some argue a bit convincingly that as fights have declined, cheap shots have risen because the perpetrator doesn't have to face the same consequences.

either draymond's alleged victim is 1) really stupid, 2)really stupid and drunk, and/or 3) all of the previous and really big as well.  the only thing i'm saying to him is "yes sir" and/or "no sir"   cuz when i get home, i want to be able to take in solids and chew them with my own teeth and to be able to pee straight ;D

I confess that I have seen very little regular-season NHL hockey the last few years. I watch a decent amount of playoffs, but there always has been far less crapola there because coaches can't afford to play no-talent goons.

So I am glad to see that it has subsided in the league all-around. I'll have to watch a few regular-season games in 2016-17 to check it out for myself!
