My guess is Georgetown. Feel like they probably spent a decent amount of time there in the early 1980s and beyond. I'm sure we had it a bit under Al, but seems like we were always overshadowed by UCLA back then.

sometimes these buggers can be the least obvious.  i didn't cast my vote yet, but one always has to wonder about depaul and the ray meyer years-just wondering

Yep, many years ago DePaul was undefeated  until ND late in the season.

I also remember the Patrick Ewing led Georgetown team that lost in the national championship game to Villanova despite being the prohibative favorite.  And was it Alonzo Mourning who teamed up with Mutombo as maybe the best inside defensive tandem ever in college basketball?

Mourning's kid Trey is on the Georgetwon team now, but I think that he's not much of a player, he's there as a legacy.

I'm guessing GTown.  They were awfully good in the Ewing/Mourning/Sleepy Floyd years.

Looked up the answer. Will just say it was interesting to see where these teams ranked.

Reality is we have not been Ranked Number 1 all that many times.

There have been a few in 1971, but I just can't think of too many others. UCLA was so dominant for so long while Al was head coach that no one got much of a chance to be Number 1 unless UCLA had a fluke loss.

In 1975-1976, when we probably had as good a team as I ever remember, Indiana went undefeated and so it was highly unlikely we would have been Number 1 at all that year. Maybe a week or two early.

Our problem in those days was we tended to lose a game right after final exams, relatively early in the season. So being Number 1 was not easy.

I know who doesn't - Marquette. I'd bet we've spent the most time in the top 10, but UCLA was #1 for most of our halcyon days. Georgetown seems like the obvious pick. They played in the championship game 3 times but IIRC N Carolina was atop the polls all year in one of those seasons and maybe Kentucky in another. I'll go with the Aguirre/Cummings DePaul teams that were #1 for most of at least one season. If Al hadn't retired at age 51 those would have been the Aguirre/Cummings Marquette squads. Oh, what could have been!

DePaul hasn't been ranked #1 since they joined the Big East, however.

Nothing surprising about Villanova and Marquette... the former was repeated ad nauseum leading up to the championship, and none of us should be surprised about the latter.  Now related to my previous post, there should have been some clarity added to the question, because if you include weeks at #1 for all current members, regardless of their past conference affiliation(s), it's a vastly different result than total weeks at #1 while (or for) a Big East member.

So there are actually two correct answers to the question... it simply depends on how you read it.




All that said, a better question for an "interesting" answer is who was the first team to be ranked #1 in the basketball AP poll (and why can't MU be more like them)?

That the Joey  Meyer curse, they greased him to get Pat Kennedy and despite having the best recruiting class in the nation he didn't get it done and didn't last.

Those that think Joey could not coach need to check his record.  The last 2 seasons were his only ones and that's because his AD and Admin places some Bogus sanctions

Just did a quick lookup of MU in the 70s.  I found two weeks in mid 1970-71, and one week in February 1978.

Lots of time at #2 from '75-'78....

God knows, an administration tried, the school just wasn't willing to stick it out with the principals who were going to get us there.

I'm not sure why you'd think that the question would have been about while the programs were Big East members when that was not aluded to at all in the question.
