Who Gets that 13th Schollie?
Option 1: LG Gill

Option 2: Kalif Young

Option 3: Other

We've been talking for months at this point about how Marquette would need to find a PF in order to win this season. We now have the scholarship for it. So who should it go to? We have two bigs coming to campus next weekend in LG Gill and Kalif Young.
LG Gill- 6"7 210 lb JR SF from Duquesne
30.0 mpg, 10.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.0 apg, 0.2 spg, 0.6 bpg, .439 FG%, .338 3P%
While he has the size to play in the post (and did at Duquesne) he is more of a shooting wing. He is as MU Fan in NY would put it, a pogo stick. He is very bouncy and uses that to grab the tough rebounds (in addition to the easy ones) and throw down some powerful dunks. On offense he specializes in catch and shoot. Good at the trailing three on a fast break.
Kalif Young- 6"9 225 lb HSSR from Orangeville Prep (Mono, Ontario, Canada).
Currently ranked #320 overall by the 247 composite and a pretty much consensus 3 star recruit. Being recruited heavily by Marquette, Providence, and Alabama. Has had coaches from a couple of blue bloods watching him but no offers. Good strength and physicality. Best quality is his surprisingly good ball handling and vision for a guy his size. High defensive upside. Limited on the offensive end, can really only score around the rim.
Gill probably makes more an impact from Day 1. He's a better athlete and can score in a lot of different ways. But he would leave us with a gaping hole to fill in 17-18, no bigs beside Matt Heldt. Young has better size would probably be a better interior defender even in his first season. Would be worried that his offense would keep him off the court too much to make an impact next season. Could backup both the PF and C positions. Also addresses the need for a 17-18 big...though I'd still like another one (Theo John perhaps?).
I voted for Young.
Maybe Wojo pole-axes Sandy and goes after both.

I've wondered if Wojo will somehow grab both. If someone were to be pole-axed I think Sandy is next on the list. However, there's also the possibility that someone else departs on their own terms.
Great minds think alike, TAMU. Looks like we started these threads like a minute apart haha.
I think we'll end up getting both, just a feeling.
Thon Maker ain't comin', hey?
I think we get one, and your only Young once.

I keep thinking this will be the case TAMU, someway.
Without knowing anything really about the two players, my instincts tell me that Kalif is the primary target. I think we're okay with a big that doesn't do too much away from the rim as we've bolstered our shooting via Rowsey, Hauser and most importantly Reinhardt.
Kalif's no fool. He knows Gill's plane touches down 24 hours after his. I suspect Young doesn't leave town without inking his deal. Now as to Gill, I think Wojo is truly interested. You mentioned TAMU that he's listed as a Junior. Please confirm that he has immediate eligibility because no kid is getting the boot for a 'sit-out' transfer. Assuming that's the case and his visit goes well and further assuming Kalif is already in the fold, Wojo will have a very difficult decision to make. A decision that I think he's fully prepared to pull the trigger on if he believes it's in the genuine interest of Marquette basketball. Assuming the gun goes off, I think we all know who's next unless someone already has one foot out the door that I'm not sensing. I suppose it's also possible that Gill might be asked to 'wait' but that can't last forever.
General question ...
Do you think a grad or foreign player that could play this fall is more a priority than a traditional transfer that has to sit a year?
In other words, is getting another body for next year more important than taking the best available, even it the best available has to sit a year?

Well done analysis.
I have only seen Gill play live . I can definitely testify that he is the as you describe him. A pogo stick for sure that can shoot. I guess I would say he reminds me of Jamil Wilson with a little more intensity. I have not seen Kalif Young in an actual game , only highlights and I don't tend to go on highlights because you need to see the screw ups too, that said You can't teach 6'-9".
I would be happy with either one. Given the post above on Luke being injured, it may be more critical to get Gill.

Priority has to be someone who can play immediately. Wojo, the program, the fans cannot afford/put up with 3 straight years of no post season hoops.
I'm amending my answer. Luke's injury if it's serious at all significantly increases the chances that Wojo pulls the trigger if he has to. He simply isn't get caught short handed again.

The program and fans have put up with 3 straight, Wojo only has 2 no bids on his watch.
We can/have afford it, Wojo might not be so fortunate.
Young and then Theo John for next year would be the dream.
If someone happens to willingly leave this year getting both Young and Gill would be great.
That said Sandy is only one really that I wouldn't mind leaving if he feels it fits.

So I saw it mentioned elsewhere. Is it still true that Kalif and Gill are doing their visit next weekend?

Yep
Reading all these posts about the Wojo whack to Wally and now more people espousing the Wojo whack to the Chief to get a couple more guys leads one to believe that there are a lot of posters to this board that believe there should be no loyalty to players previously recruited and that Wojo should do anything to get perceived better players--hey the ends justify the means--but be careful, you might just get what you wish for.

The Wally cut makes sense to many in part because of his commitment to track. And I don't think anyone is particularly calling for Chief to lose his scholly. Personally I think Wojo has 2 guys coming in for one recently created spot. But somebody's going to be 12th and 13th man next year and both will need to be content with essentially zero minutes in BEast play.
If Wojo owes anyone, it's Sandy for not bailing on Wojo when he first arrived.

Ha yeah I thought about that as well. But that's means someone leaving and we already got a "chief hate" thread going.
But yes, both plus John would be amazing.
How does Young compare to STjr? Similar style?
