Looks like Fitz is putting a MU alumni team together for the 2016 edition of The Basketball Tournament.
https://twitter.com/danieljohnfitz/status/717844429046984704
And my understanding is that we need to get them enough votes to qualify: https://www.thetournament.com/teams/golden-eagles-alumni-marquette-alumni
For the uninformed, The Basketball Tournament is a $2 million grand prize open entry event. Groups of other schools' alums have entered in the past and done pretty well, including teams from Syracuse, ND, and I think Wisconsin. F-ck those guys. To give you a level of understanding on the quality of competition, last year's champs were essentially the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the D-League.
So, go vote and tell your non-scooper MU hoops friends!

Correct. They need a ton of votes
Maybe add a "Vote for Marquette Alumni Team" to the title of the thread or mods pin it at the top to get more votes? It'd be cool to watch if they were voted in.
Hilltopper/Rocky
Could this be added to the scoreboard on the site?
What's a realistic team to get?
Diener
Blue
DJO
Lazar
R Jackson
...
Devante
Devante is a must. I voted.

R Jax is almost 37 years old at this point so he wont help much.
I was thinking Blue, Gardner, Wilson, Dom James, Carlino
Marcus Jackson works out at my gym and is definitely in tip top shape. Played ball with/against him in pick-up a couple of times, he's good.

DERRICK WILSON?!?!?
DJO's gotta be on the squad he is perfect for this thing. Davante too.
Bump
Not sure if this was posted, but if not, it needs to be and it needs some Scoop love behind it. Former Warrior Dan Fitzgerald is trying to get a Marquette team going for the 2016 edition of The Basketball Tournament, a $2 million, winner-take-all tournament that unites old college teams and players of eras past.
Currently, Marquette is in 17th place in the Midwest Region, and only the top 12 seeds get automatic bids. Marquette is at 143 votes and needs to get to at least 224 to pass 12th placed Ohio United (and likely needs more). Come on, Scoop, let's get voting and put a Marquette alumni team in The Basketball Tournament!
https://www.thetournament.com/teams/golden-eagles-alumni-marquette-alumni
I voted. Very curious to see what the rest of the squad turns out to be, should they get enough votes.
Merged, and pinned to the top in an effort to get the good guys in.
Is there a Marquette Alumni Facebook group that is active? If so, might be a good idea to post it there.

Are you implying that the invisible hand of scoop is not powerful enough to get this done on its own?

Possibly. I'll let you know in a few weeks.
We are now 35 votes shy of 12th and a spot as an auto qualifier. We're in 15th. Top 12 get auto votes.
We have 181 votes and a good chunk of those are referrals. I know the Scoop community has a much larger population than that.
All good...but Fitz needs to recruit a few more players!
I just OK'd Fitz for the Marquette Club of CT Facebook page.
He promptly advertised support for this.
Bump. We're getting closer. Still need alot of votes though. Feel free to use the link below, which would help me become the "top fan" for the group.

If you need any incentive, if you vote and Marquette ends up winning the tournament, the top 80 fans of the team receive money (minimum of $1K each and up to $20K)
Dan Fitzgerald is doing his best on Facebook to increase votes, but every vote helps.
EDIT: up to 13th in the Midwest.
All he needs to do is get Jimmy, Jae, Wes or Wade to put it on twitter or retweet it and he'll get loads of votes

Good idea....disappointed in myself for not thinking of that. Can't believe Fitz hasn't at least gotten Wes to promote it since they played together.
Granted, he has probably been pretty busy with his playoff chase...

Marquette up to 12th in the Midwest. 8 more votes puts them in the top-10.
Heyo we got 2 players now.
Got my vote in!!! referred some out too

Sounds like the start of a solid team. Love how Trent was only here for a year but associates himself with MU.
Dwight Burke on the squad now
Up to 10th with a little bit of breathing room, but will need a lot more votes. Still over a month left of voting I believe.
So if the team plays poorly against the KState alumni, how is that going to affect our 2017 NCAA resume?
Up to 8th place in the Midwest.
All they really need is a PG and maybe a slightly more skilled big man. Jerel and Lockett on the wings is quite the combo.
Trend Blackledge is on Team Utah and Davante Gardner is on Seven City Grain if you're looking for other teams to vote for.
I think they need a more catchy name than Golden Eagles Alumni.

I don't see why the entire coaching staff can't sign up for this. Don't they want to prove they have the best noon ball team ever?

Acker on the roster now
We are currently 7th in the Midwest. Need to be top 12 to qualify. We are about 70 votes clear of 13th place.
You know for the quality of non NBA alums we have this roster is turning out to be somewhat disappointing.

Marquette has some of the best players in Europe, Japan, and the D league. They just chose not to play in this tournament. Or like Davante, playing on another team.

Right...they have two options -
1) take the guaranteed money they are making - and will continue to make
2) Gamble for a *chance* (1.5625% chance to be more exact) to get a one time lump sum payment of $100k-$200k
I don't blame anybody who is getting a consistent paycheck for saying no to this tourney.
Why is it either/or? Doesn't this tournament take place during the off season?

If you owned a team/business who was paying someone 70k a year, would you want them working for another team/business risking getting hurt/hurting your business (shh, not a perfect analogy)?
So either their contract says they can not participate in other basketball leagues (Or risk losing their contract) or it states that if they get hurt playing in another league they can forfeit their contract.

Like who? All these guys are better now than a guy like Lazar. DJO, Vander would be good options. Vander just got done with the playoffs. Maybe he joins, but it probably doesn't make sense for him if he thinks he has a shot to make a roster next year. It's during summer league, so you're not going to get guys who want to use it to try to impress a team.

Lockett Burke and Acker better than Hayward? I know that Hayward hasn't torn it up this year in the D league but you can't honestly think he wouldn't be putting up unreal numbers in those other leagues.

He's almost 30 and if I'm not mistaken he took a few years off from basketball in the middle of his career. Hayward was a great player here, one of my favorites, but he's averaging 5 points in the D League. For comparison, 2 years ago in Lockett's only D League season he averaged 11 PPG and he's certainly gotten better.
I'd love if we could have gotten Blue, DJO, and Davante. Don't think Hayward would be much help. Lockett has been a fringe NBA guy each summer, just missing the cut and then going to Europe. He actually made the Kings roster his rookie year but I don't believe he ever played.
I think the roster is exactly what you'd expect. Acker, Lockett and McNeal are great additions. Burke? No idea. Haven't seen him in 7 years.

They got the one more player and it's Davante Gardner.
Pretty well balanced team now, figure Acker, Jerel, DJO, Jamil, and Gardner would get their lion's share, with Lockett and Burke able to back up multiple positions. Love to see them add one more guard for depth (Blue, James, or both?).
Did Davante leave his Virginia team? Awesome add!

Novak is listed as a booster. Is that a special position for 6-11 guys that can't play the post?
Get KO to coach?
Up to 7th place in the midwest, which is actually 19th overall. Toughest region for votes by far.

Yeah, the funny thing is that I imagine seeding doesn't really matter. If it's all fan votes, who cares if you're first, twelfth, or sixteenth? Have to imagine any team in the top-20 will end up getting a bid, as there will be 16 at-larges.
Something neat: Wes is now the coach for the team. Really cool to see all these guys getting involved.
This team is currently better then the actual Marquette squad. Can we get some eligibility back?
For those in the Chicago area, MU alumni's first game(s) - provided they remain in top 12 - will be at St. Xavier University in the Mt Greenwood neighborhood on the southwest side. I plan on checking it out. July 16-17
With only a couple days to go, MU is 6th in voting in the midwest (though only about 200 votes from 12th place).
Should be good to go, but watch for any voting runs these next couple days.
I did notice the Kentucky team is not eligible yet - though they claim there's no need for concern - and that they'll be eligible. But Cal has actually signed on to coach them??? Why would he participate in this?

Cal's listed as a booster on the UK team page, Derek Anderson's listed as the coach. Given the video that Cal posted the other day, I presume that his role as booster is reaching out to players to convince them to play?

Ah...good catch. I just saw they had Cal, and didn't look at his position.
Diener's now a coach too. MUBB is also the most "experienced" team (whatever that means) of the top 11 vote getting eligible teams in the mid-west.
In their rankings they were like 15th or something.
Team is down to 8th in the midwest, with only 25 votes separating them from the 12th place team. If you haven't voted, do so now
Voted and shared. I see that the Teenage Assassin has signed on to coach. C'Mon Travis, you got more game than just smokin' Wojo at noon.

After reading the FAQs it sounds like they decide experience based on who they believe is the best, played at the highest level and is going to go the farthest. I think it's kind of a joke after going through some of the teams listed as higher.
Interesting: Kentucky Alumni are officially eligible with the addition of Chane Behanan from, of all schools, Louisville.

This is the 5 but I think I let Jerel run the point. Acker a very solid backup for him. DB can spell Jamil/Davante up front. Chapman is a nice depth addition. Are they able to add players after today?
Would like to see at least one more guy added from this pool: Otule, Vander, Bikes, Car3no, Lazar.

To be eligible to compete, a TEAM MUST HAVE SEVEN (7) PLAYERS REGISTERED TO COMPETE NO LATER THAN 12:00 pm (NOON) (ET) on JUNE 1, 2016. After 12:00 pm (NOON) (ET) on June 1, 2016 Teams may add up to three (3) additional Players to their rosters; however, at no point may a Team's total roster of Players exceed eleven (11) and no additional Players may be added to a Team's roster after 12:00 pm (NOON) (ET) on July 1, 2016
PG Acker
SG DJO
SF McNeal
PF Wilson
C Gardner
Acker would be perfect for this team where he can just distribute and snipe. Wilson takes the tip but bodies up the 4 while Ox is the force down low.
Honestly I think only Marquette fans realize how good this team actually is, really balanced and they have some guys who can put up 30 any given day. Add a little more depth and they could very well win the whole thing.
Zar is still injured, correct? I remember him missing D league playoffs.
Ideal three additions, Lazar, Dominic James, Ousmane Barro.
I see on the TBT website where if a team makes it to the Sweet 16 and has at least 2000 votes, they can activate a ringer. I'm assuming this is what they're saving Ners for?
