Title: Vitale
Post by: AlumKCof93 on December 18, 2007, 09:24:01 AM
He's not my favorite, but I don't doubt he's a good guy.

Letter to my fans
Dick Vitale
SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

To: My favorite people, all of the fans that make college basketball special!
From: Dick Vitale
During the past month and a half, I have had a very difficult time with discomfort in my throat. Personally, I want to apologize to all of the fans and all of the beautiful people at ESPN who have been fantastic to me during my 29 years working at the network.

I have been blessed to have the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people, especially my current teammates, Dan Shulman, Doris Burke, coordinating producer Dan Steir and director Doug Holmes, who have all been so understanding and supportive.

The past six weeks have been very emotional me and for my family as we've visited some of the most outstanding throat specialists. Fortunately, I am currently under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Deems in Sarasota, FL and he is an outstanding ear, nose and throat specialist. Dr. Deems strongly recommended that I visit Dr. Steven Zeitels, who is recognized as one of the premier throat and voice specialists in the nation.

Dr. Zeitels serves as the director for the Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. After an examination, it was determined that I had lesions on my left vocal cord and that they should be surgically removed. Dr. Zeitels said his goal is to have me back sitting at courtside in early February.

There is nothing professionally that I love better than sharing insights about the players and coaches that make college basketball so unique. I can't wait to get back with all my colleagues at ESPN. Visiting college campuses and interacting with the fans has kept me so young and energized. I can't wait to get back out there, having a blast with all of you, who are so vital to our game.

I am so proud to have started at ESPN back in 1979, where I have met so many beautiful people who have been so kind and fair to me and my family. Now more than ever, I have seen how special the people at ESPN are, starting with president George Bodenheimer, as they have genuinely been fantastic to me in dealing with this little bump in the road.

Once again, happy holidays to each and every one of you. Thanks so much for your tremendous support during my tenure with ESPN. I will be updating my Web site with basketball tidbits concerning the various teams, players and coaches during my rehabilitation process. This is already a dynamite hoop season and I cannot wait for March Madness.

P.S.: If you want to lend me a helping hand, go to dickvitaleonline.com and during this holiday season, help me assist kids that are battling cancer by making a donation to the V Foundation in memory of Payton Wright. You can send a check in care of the V Foundation and mail it to Tandem Enterprises, 7810 Mathern Court, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34202. Or you can call (800) 4-JIMMYV and please indicate that your donation is in memory of Payton Wright.

My goal is to raise $1 million for the Payton Wright research grant to help kids battling cancer.

Dick Vitale coached the Pistons and the University of Detroit before broadcasting ESPN's first college basketball game in December 1979. Send him a question for possible use on ESPNEWS.

Wow, very sad news. Dickie V is one of the reasons I fell in love with college ball in mid 80s. ACC hoops and Dickie V, it's awesome baby! I pray for a quick and painless recovery.

Last year during the CBE Tournament in Kansas City, I had the privilege of meeting Dickie V down in the tunnels of the arena.  He was extraordinarily nice as we chatted a minute or two and even let me take a picture with him.

My dad also encountered Vitale at some point of the college game day last year versus Pitt and had nothing but good things to say about him.

While his announcing can be a bit over the top, you are right AlumKCof93, he is a hell of a guy in person.

You gotta think that Vitale has just let himself develop into a personality while on the mic. People loved hearing him, so he kept going and pushing it.

It's true.  When I talked to him he was nothing like the guy you hear on tv.

It has to be tireing being Dick Vitale.  Wherever you go people expect you to go nuts!

Sounds like the surgery was a success.  That's good to hear - wouldn't wish this on anyone, least of all him.  As much as I bash him for being a Duke brainwashie he really is a decent human being and does do good things with his celebrity status.  Further, it's hard not to appreciate his enthusiasm and love of the game.

DV loved Al big time.   Always a MU supporter.  Great games vs. Detroit back in the day.  Best of health.

Naturally, I wish him well-
I remember Al trying to calm DV down at the Mil Arena, when the police had to come and escort him from the court after his second T.  I remember him dancing at the Arena's center court after Detroit beat the Warriors' championship team.  I remember hearing from pro players that he had no business coaching the Pistons, and no ability to do so.  I remember having to turn the sound down whenever he does a TV game, so as to be able to listen on the radio..., but believe he truly is a decent guy.

I also wish him well.  I think he's a kid's announcer.  I liked him when I was a teenager, but man is he annoying now.  But if he continues to bring young kids to the game, then good for him and good for the game.

Not many people can say that they love what they do like Dickie V. Yeah, he can be over the top, but for him to maintain that level of enthusiasm night in and night out is impressive.

Hope he has a speedy recovery.
