There is an ESPN Insider Article today. It talks about how there are basically 9 spots left for the NCAA Tournament, everyone else has locked up bids or they will be rewarded to single bid conferences. I don't want to post the whole article here since it's behind a paywall, but the gist is that those 9 spots will come down to 24 remaining teams. 7 of those are classified as "long shots" which means that they have a chance to get in if they win out to the conference championship, but typically no teams actually are capable of making that run.
Here is the excerpt:
Long shots (7). These teams aren't completely off the board, but they better not lose before their respective conference-championship games. In a typical year, no one from this category actually makes the tournament: BYU, Stanford, Creighton, Clemson, Florida State, Marquette, Georgia Tech.
He was also quoted as saying that RPI has less of an effect every year, so we (teams in general, not just Marquette) shouldn't be overly concerned with it.
Bottom line: Lunardi thinks we could get in if we win the next four. I don't necessarily agree, but he's far better at this than me. So unless we lose this week, I'm considering our at-large hopes alive. :)
Here's today's ray of hope!
We got this.
That makes me smile.
Last Conference Tourney Title, 1997
Last Conference Tourney Runner-up, 2002
WE ARE DUE
Hers hoping for a Creighton Marquette big east championship game!
The last time we played in a tournament in NYC, we won it. Here's to two in a row!!!
If winning out and getting to the final could get us in, then we might as well just win that last one to erase any doubt :)
This is doable, people.

Excellent point chili.
Not to nitpick, but the last time MU played in a tournament in NYC, MU got taken to the woodshed by Nova.
Brooklyn on the other hand...

Not to nitpick, but Brooklyn hasnt been it's own city since 1898. It is a neighborhood within NYC ;)
Oohhhhhhhhh..... so when Benny talks about RPI's irrelevance being off the charts this year, one person believes him, but when Joe Lunardi talks about it - a couple months later, no less - everyone fawns over Joe.
I get it.

...unless he's a Villanova fan!
Clearly, he's a DePaul fan.
Actually went to Notre Dame
Well, this definitely didn't make the Creighton and DePaul losses feel any better.
When it comes down to the final few spots the NCAA looks at how you have done against the teams in the field. It is not really the RPI that determines whether you get in, but having a good record against teams in the tournament probably means you have a good RPI.

;D
It's entirely possible they'll ignore the RPI. Based on what everyone is saying, it seems the first sub-70 in nearly two decades will get in. But until it actually happens, everyone is just speculating, including Lunardi.
0-5 vs RPI top 25
113 RPI
Would be pleasantly surprised as well with a bid

I do think we have to win the Big East tournament to get in. However, if we win four straight to get to 22 wins I think it gets us into consideration and then it matters how the other teams in consideration have fared against the other teams already in the field. I am not sure where LSU stands, but if they could get a bid that is a win for us in the field, UW is in, so that is a win for us in the field. We would need Providence to get a bid and that would be two more wins against the field. Why I am doubtful, I could see a run in the Big East title game resulting in a bid.
So ... I guess what everyone is saying is ...
WE'RE IN!!!!

If you contraction of "we're" stands for "we were," then yes, you are correct.
That is, until the DePaul and Creighton catastrophes.

Knock it off. We won a couple of close ones we weren't supposed to win, so it all evens out. We can't expect every lucky break to fall our way.
A win Saturday, and a win over Seton Hall, then X at MSG (most likely opponents w/ a win on Saturday), then a loss to Nova in the BET final puts our RPI and SOS at 67/72, per RPI Wizard.
Just sayin'.

Well, lets not get too carried away. We just beat a team that has only one win in its last 9 games (and that was over a terrible St. Johns team) by one point in a home game. The odds of us winning at Butler, and on a neutral court against Seton Hall and Xavier are infinitesimal.

Oh, I'm definitely a glass half empty kind of guy when it comes to rooting for my sports teams. OTOH, I don't get bent out of shape when this particular team loses and I am overall quite happy with the way Wojo has been bringing them along.

Also, ESPN'S RPI has had us 4 to 5 spots better all year than LiveRPI.Currently on LiveRPI we are 108, but in ESPN's RPI, which is updated through last night, we are 104.
Now, rightly or wrongly, I tend to trust ESPN more than I trust LiveRPI.com. So it's realistic that in that scenario our RPI could actually be in the 63 range.
I hope I am wrong but we're not dancing this year.
So close but so far......
Here's to an improvement by our team and by Wojo. Especially toward the end of the year. But not this year.

I'd say we're virtually a lock for the NIT at this point. Don't think a loss @ Butler and versus anyone not named Depaul or SJU knock us out of the NIT.
